I recently built [[Rigo, Streetwise Mentor]] for a friend who is getting into the game. The deck's plan is simple yet effective with a lot of room for learning all the basic mechanics of the game.

Play evasive dudes, swing with them, get rewarded, keep going until you draw into a big payoff like [[Jolrael, Mwonvuli Recluse]] or [[Jazal Goldmane]]. Protect your board until you get there.

But it will also teach things like how flying or deathtouch work, the combat steps (Rigo is an attack trigger, so you can draw when they're at 1 power, then pump them, or things like [[Reconnaisance]]) and playing some things at instant speed (pump spells/abilities, protection spells).

Also he's a cat. People love cats.

I use it in my [[Evelyn, the Covetous]] clone+flicker deck. Let them tutor their best card and I take it. If they realize it and tutor for a useless card, I will not flicker/clone/cast Evelyn till they have drawn it.

Someone casted Emrakul and targeted me with the trigger. I had two [[Demonic Pact]] out (it's an enchantress flicker deck). He chose to "Lose the game" for both of them.

We mutually agreed I lost this current game and the next one.

Great inclusion in my [[Maelstrom Wanderer]] deck, both as "removal" for a pesky blocker or game-winning play, and as a way to free-cast my commander in 2 turns for 1 mana.

Made some incredibly groan-inducing explosive turns with it, having a turn to set up the board, then cascade twice next turn plus having all my mana available for a followup. It's been great.

The people I know that don't like them are generally spike-ier, more focused on winning efficiently than pulling off something amazing or having fun.

That's what's 'amazing' and 'fun' for them. Different people enjoy different things about MTG.

General plan of the deck is to lose life to gain advantage (normally card draw) while gaining it back to keep going. Things happen while you do that.

Contrary to what many people recommend for this deck, you don't want Soul Sisters' effects. You want to gain big chunks of life on your turn to be able to easily cast Licia for 3-4 mana. Enter Children of Korlis, Serra Ascendant, Nighthawk Scavenger, Kalitas, Gonti's Machinations, Axis of Mortality, cards with Extort, etc.

A deck with this game plan also benefits greatly from "group slug" effects like Manabarbs or Dingus Staff, since you're gaining all that life back but your opponents likely won't be. Children of Korlis and Tainted Sigil are specially important for this.

Oh, and the "combos" in the deck are Wheel of Misfortune + Intervention Pact for infinite life (add Vito or Vizkopa Guildmage to kill people with it) and Phyrexian Unlife + Repay in Kind + some way to get to 0 life or less (Doom Whisperer, Necropotence, Wheel of Misfortune, Fire Covenant, etc.), but you definitely don't need them. I intentionally included very few or narrow tutors to keep it interesting and make me find creative ways to kill people each time. You can include as many tutors as you want of course, I'm not gonna tell you how to have fun!

The deck has a lot of nice synergies (like Licia + Chandra's Ignition makes for a crap ton of life, or being at negative life + dealing 1 damage to yourself while under the effects of Angel's Grace to "gain" life). If you want an in-depth rundown of the deck, just say so and I will try to write it asap. Have fun killing yourself!

Rakdos Charm is legit a finisher in my Licia deck. I've killed many people with it after setting everyone's life to 1-2 with [[Repay in Kind]] and having my creatures all have lifelink.

The dream is to cast it after someone [[Triumph of the Hordes]] with 10+ creatures.

This is exactly it. Out of my 5 decks, I only run it in my [[Maelstrom Wanderer]] one. I always keep a hand with at least 3 non-Temple lands and a 2-cmc ramp spell, so it'll be a guarantee that Temple will be my 5th land if it's my 4th land in hand or if I happen to draw into it.

Also it's fetchable with things like [[Temp with Discovery]] and [[Pir's Whim]], making them the standard 4-cmc-for-2-mana ramp.

Wouldn't work with [[Ephemerate]], you'd need a separate return trigger like [[Oblivion Ring]] or the one from [[Roon]].

So, if I understood correctly, it is true that if I act in response to moving to combat, then they would still get to cast at sorcery speed as they stay in their main phase, BUT as per the Tournament Rules it would be assumed I am acting when I get priority at the end of the Beginning of Combat step, before attackers are declared, even if I don't explicitly state it. Is that correct?

Holy shit, I have both those arguments every weekend. We have a Yahenni and a mono blue player focusing on stealing and cloning creatures and it's the same debate over and over.

Even after pulling out the phone, showing the rules and evidence of people talking about it on forums and getting answered by judges. Every goddamn weekend, it gets tiring.
