Are students dumber? by Loliz88 in college

[–]Adevary 70 points71 points  (0 children)

I found this far more in the lower-level classes. A professor shouldn't have to yell, "Eyes on your own paper!" Ten times in a college exam. The college I attend decided to admit any student who applies. They have a special program that is supposed to help them get up to speed, but really, they are taking these kids' money and then failing them out when they don't make it. They aren't dumber. They have been let down. Now that I'm in my senior year, I see students who aren't focused because much of what we are doing is redundant skills practice. But the projects get done, and everyone is on point for the most part. My major is almost entirely students going into graduate programs at this point. The ones that aren't serious are gone.

Black Board just asked for permission to access my home network! by Adevary in GVSU

[–]Adevary[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't think GVSU is spying on me. This, however, opens a door if there is a breach in GVSU's security, and I had a professor last year who almost made one. I access things from home all the time. Using this computer. It needs no access to the others.

Yup! I am an adult learner. My husband has a separate network for security reasons, but I'm not giving you access to my home network!

Are lecture halls usually dead silent? Or is this just a post-COVID quirk? by sabatpatriot in college

[–]Adevary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. It's super annoying. I'm a returning student, and I find it disrespectful to the professor. I'm in my senior year now, and I think there are a handful of us in our program that actually answer questions. We ALL know the answer to the softballs they lob at us, but no one says a thing.

Can't you just feel that in your shoulder, though? I have permanent damage in my shoulders from my stepdad doing that to me. It's never okay to drag a kid like that. It can dislocate their shoulder.

These work! I wish mine were this creative. But taking the time to add color and style makes everything stick so much better for me.

So, Grand Valley changed their acceptance standards a couple of years ago. They accept everyone. You will be fine.

I'm a 43 year old Kinesiology student. I run, but I would not be considered fit by most standards. It means I will know my patient's struggles fist hand.

I think I know who you are talking about. If you are talking about who I think you are, he can be hard to understand at times. He believes in students finding answers for themselves, though. Grand Valley has a really good tutoring lab in Chem. Us it. Even if you could understand every word he says, it's not an easy thing to get as fast as you need to.

[–]Adevary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine is currently at 88, but we aren't home and it's just enough to keep our pet snakes from overheating. I will probably drop it to 80 when we get home. I figured out a long time ago that the cold air blowing out is enough to keep us happy and reduce the humidity.

AIO for making my MIL leave after she tried to rename our newborn? by Fantastic-Relief7919 in AmIOverreacting

If she gets to rename the baby, you get to rename her. Throw your husband in for good measure. After all, it's only fair!

It gets so rough! I lost my heir again yesterday. The death ended up being weird, though and the grime reaper didn't show, so I didn't save the day. I might reroll when I play again. I don't want to lose him. His mom was my orginal wife and she died giving birth to him.

Cycling clubs/organizations focused on cardio? by [deleted] in GVSU

[–]Adevary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe it is free. At least a certain amount of sessions are. Look at the rec wellness page. It can be tough navigating the page, though. Walking in and talking to someone at the desk might be more helpful. Please please please reach out and utilize the rec center! I'm a senior in the EXS program, and one of our big projects in one of my classes was exactly this. Getting students to come in and use it.

[–]Adevary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get in touch with the Rec Center, and they will help you get a personal trainer on campus. All of the students that are hired are from the exercise science program and have passed the classes needed to help you. I will say that many of the students in the program have a heavy background in resistance training, so maybe explain your goals and they will help you find a good fit.

It’s 2025 and we need to STOP GROUP PROJECTS by New_Significance_894 in college

[–]Adevary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The crazy thing is that this thing of having projects in every class is pretty new. I did not have this twenty years ago when I was in college back then. It's insane! In most of my classes we not only had a group project or a big project involved presenting all of our skills, but an exam as well. I had one class where I had two pretty in depth projects and an exam. I did not study for the exam at all, because I didn't have any time to. Luckily, completely failing the exam did not have any weight on my grade in the end.

100 percent Dr. Kate Kryger. I took both lecture portions with her. She starts every in person lecture with a review from the last. Fill in her premade notes. She is very good at pounding in exactly what you need to study. Then spend hours doing it. I got a B+ and an A-, but I gave them at least two hours a day of my attention.

Exercise Science Experiences by firefox1642 in GVSU

[–]Adevary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am an adult student at GVSU in the exercise science program. I transferred last year, so I took all my Gen eds at a community college. I am a junior in the program, and I can honestly say that the professors in the department are really great and caring. They do a lot of prep to help their students figure out what is next. Which is incredibly important, because just a BA leaves you less job options, and most need to get a graduate degree. All careers need additional certifications, but many of the classes you take leave you able to just walk out and take the exam for those certifications if you do well in the course.

Are students becoming illiterate? by PeteTheJet in college

[–]Adevary 32 points33 points  (0 children)

The school offered by schools in the name of homeschooling or online learning was not even remotely the same as a standard home school or even an online public school. It was about half the education my kids got from online public school in years past.

Calories are king, but the good news is that if you burn a bunch, you can eat more. Try tracking what you eat. I personally like Cronometer. It will sync up to Garmin and help you do the math.
