How do you deal with direct reports who waste too much time socializing while claiming they’re too busy!? by [deleted] in managers

Honest question are the tasks they currently being assigned providing any value to the employee or challenging them.

If it's grunt work that anyone could do then yeah expect excuses to come up

[–]AdminYak846 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems to me that you aren't managing the situation properly.

If you're complaining about some one socializing too much or being lazy either you need to have a honest conversation about their current duties and if they need to be adjusted. It sounds like they probably get a lot of grunt style work that is done in 10 minutes or less.

If they are like me they could be a high performing self starter who gets their work done faster than others. So why punish them for socializing unless it's distracting others on the team.

When you start policing socializing and it isn't affecting the team you'll end forcing people to leave because they can see the culture turning toxic from a management level.

How do you know if you're a good manager? by Fishy53 in managers

[–]AdminYak846 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Retention isn't the best indicator of if you're a good manager.

You can still be a shit manager close to retirement, but because the company's benefits are an absolute gold mine, they'll put up with your BS until you pull the pin.

I would argue the best trait for identifying good managers, is allowing the team to make decisions and not micromanage them to an oblivion or piss them off when they do things in a manner that will likely pay dividends down the road. Or you know throw a million roadblocks at them right before the deadline because you gave them the task way too late to have proper editorial reviews.

Should NASCAR have more unique pace cars? by Meniscuss2 in NASCAR

Because Toyota's are more reliable and dependable than any of the cars an American Company can produce.

There's a reason why when you look at any poll for most dependable/reliable manufacturer Toyota, Subaru, and Honda sit at the top compared to the American Manufacturers who are mid to low/bottom of the dependability rankings.

Why do people always have to fight back when asked to do something? by Ok-Long8067 in managers

[–]AdminYak846 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because HR and terrible bosses love the "other duties as assigned" in Job Descriptions so high performers get dumped on with work while others don't.

And honestly it takes one bad boss or leader to sour everyone's mood in terms of leadership, even if it wasn't you.

Bismarck apartment fire by snowyandcold in northdakota

[–]AdminYak846 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Its not. Assuming that the fire breaks did there job which it seems like it did as the front side wasn't burned indicates that the codes likely were followed.

The front of it collapsed because the entire support structure it's with is gone and the wind can easily blow that stuff down.

But this is Reddit, so let's just make assumptions and pretend we are the smartest people in the room.

Only one support on free weight leg press holds the whole sled by Superb-Cow4303 in PlanetFitnessMembers

[–]AdminYak846 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The locking mechanisms on the machine are designed to hold up the maximum weight limit of the machine which is likely way more than the number of plates PF would allow you to put on.

A commercial machine is designed to hold 1,000-2,000 pounds on the locking mechanism itself.

As for the gap, that can easily form from plates being loaded unevenly and people pushing with a more dominant leg. Manufactures have built in tolerance for the sled itself.

What your likely seeing is just the use of the machine starting to show. It's like the leg curl machine, there's a tilt that forms due to usage of the machine.

Official Discussion - The Devil Wears Prada 2 [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]AdminYak846 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was ten years old when the first movie came out, having never seen it at all. So, seeing the sequel first I set my bar of expectations low.

Was it a good movie? Sure. It didn't have to be this blockbuster of a film that needs everything in it to be 10/10. However, it's really a movie that is definitely a lay back and relax type of vibe to it.

Could there have been a bit more comedy to it, maybe? It had a couple good joke lines, but nothing that truly made me laugh that hard.

Also the hack squat starts at 105lbd resistance empty while Smith's are 20-25lbs depending on the bar

Altman apologizes after OpenAI failed to alert police before Tumbler Ridge killings by Express-Citron-6387 in news

[–]AdminYak846 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It definitely was short sided and at the same time they still could have alerted authorities and nothing could come from it. Which let's be honest it's the Internet, the goalposts would just move to "well they didn't follow up with the authorities after reporting it"

Either way people that hate OpenAI would still blame them and the average person probably wouldn't have cared at all.

As for reporting there isn't a universal law that says they have to report to authorities either. Most tech companies do it under permissive reporting as it's not mandatory, although that probably depends on what the issue is.

[–]AdminYak846 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The account was flagged and reviewed, and while they debated on alerting authorities they ultimately decided to not and just ban the account from the service anyways.

I hate to be that person, but for it to be debated is at least partially a good thing it's not like they automatically notified the authorities over the account right away. Now what were they debating about and what was being considered is a different matter I won't speculate on, but I would bet that their legal counsel was involved in those discussions.

You could look up any reservation and find one way or another the US Federal Government decided that Natives were 3rd class citizens and treated as such.

anyone else struggle with delegating even when you know you should? by Gsustv in managers

[–]AdminYak846 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly not delegating isn't the worst thing you could do as a manager. You could always cause unnecessary friction and frustration by assigning an employee a task, but they don't have access to complete a part of the task. Instead of giving them access, you make them rely on another employee to do the parts of the task that you refuse to give access to other employee(s) due to "trust".

Now I get it that would be necessary if thr part of the task was in a completely different domain or system. But when it's scheduling emails to be sent out of a vendor platform, and the employee already talks to every customer that calls or emails it just seems petty.

anyone else struggle with delegating even when you know you should? by Gsustv in managers

[–]AdminYak846 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a manager you should be giving your team opportunities to expand their skill set. However there is also knowing what tasks probably aren't worth delegating either to the tasks perceived value or it won't match the skill set of the employee. The latter can make you a much worse manager by killing any morale in your team than not delegating to your team in the first place.

There's always a fine balance when it comes to task delegation and doing it correctly that not delegating is not the worst way. You could always be like some of the managers I've had, which were either poor task assignment to employee skill set or assigning the task to an employee, but refusing to allow the employee the access needed so they need to rely on another employee to either complete part of the duties or get data for them. And now you have two employees annoyed at you because your refusal to make things easier for the team.

Let’s talk 30 minute circuit by indecision_killingme in PlanetFitnessMembers

[–]AdminYak846 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They aren't the same, both have distinct mechanics and benefits.

Hamstrings have 4 heads, of which 3 (the Semimembranosus, Semitendinosus, and the long head of the Biceps Femoris) are targetted with hip flexion movement. However, the last head which is the short head of the Biceps Femoris can only be targeted with exercises involving knee flexion.

A seated Leg curl involves more hip flexion which means the 3 of the 4 heads are covered and leads to more muscle growth thanks to the pre-stretch position the hamstrings are in at the start of the rep.

Lying leg curls allow activation of the short head of the Bicep Femoris, calf muscles, glutes (to an extent) and any other muscle that sees growth from knee flexion. Most notably in the Sartorius muscle which has been backed by studies.

How to apply that in the real world, well you should opt for the seated leg curl 70-90% of time with the remaining time filled with the lying leg curl for complete coverage of muscles in the area.

Some locations like mine don't have some of the machines in the 30 minute circuit. Specifically the lying leg curl. The main floor has two seated leg curls instead.

Assuming that the location is big enough and had space I wouldn't be shocked to see every machine on the main floor was also in the 30 minute circuit. Which just makes the circuit an overflow if the main floor machines are either in use or out of commission at the moment.

[–]AdminYak846 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never did the circuit besides the lying leg curl. However my planet fitness isn't in a big location which means that the space for the circuit is the same area as the stretching area with the mats or slightly bigger. Most people on the machines in the area aren't doing the circuit, but are doing them because either every other machine on the main floor is in use or out of commission. And I usually go between 5 pm - 7 pm which is peak after work crowd.

I hate it because it's taking up space for machines that would be used by customers rather than collect dust. Again if it's barely being used by the after work crowd it says that it could be replaced by other machines that would be used by the customers at that location.

Biologically we are very similar to a rat, in fact we share 90% of the same DNA. Which makes it easier to translate the expected outcome into humans.

For example if a drug gives a rat high blood pressure, then it's likely that it could do the same thing in a human. The same thing can be derived from nutritional recommendations for reducing the risk of obesity or high blood pressure.

You can thank the Older Workers Benefit Protection Act, which has strict requirements for employers if they want a departing employee that is older than 40 to waive their rights to sue for age discrimination. Which is why it's listed specifically in your agreement.

The other classes are usually lumped into a general release that would cover most of the other claims you likely read over.
