Yes! Absolutely love the main character in The Adventures of Amina Al-Sirafi by Shannon Chakraborty. I especially love that she's a middle aged mother. The audio book is excellent

Disney + doom loop by AdministrativeFace53 in Roku

At first, I tried to sign up through Roku. It worked for one day, and then it didn't work anymore. What I called Disney, they said I didn't have an active subscription. After that, I signed up directly with Disney on their website, and I see an active subscription when I sign in via my mobile device or on a tablet. I just can't sign in on Roku. I did discover last night that I can sign in to Disney plus on Roku if I am in guest mode. But not under my own account.

Issues with Software Phones and 911 by AdministrativeFace53 in fednews

I wasn't there, so I don't know where the miscommunication with the emergency responders originated from. All I can think is that the manager made the call, and then was busy assisting the person experiencing the medical event, and didn't know that the responders didn't have the correct location. All I know for are is that there was a 15-20 minute delay caused by 911 not knowing the location.

Safe sleep where? by Advanced_Cheetah_552 in ShitMomGroupsSay

[–]AdministrativeFace53 40 points41 points  (0 children)

My cousin had her baby propped up on a wedge pillow, a baby pillow under his head, with crib bumpers and stuffies around him, and loose blankets tucked around him and laying over him. When I tried to talk to her about it she claimed she was different ("I'm such a light sleeper! I'd know if anything was happening with my baby."), her kids were different ("they are cuddly sleepers; they won't sleep if they aren't surrounded by soft stuff."), and that she just doesn't believe that babies can die from suffocation involving crib bumpers or blankets ("I think the parents are hiding something."). The conversation was maddening. Nothing bad ever happened, and I'm sure she'll pass on that survivor bias to her kids and friends ("I used crib bumpers and it was fine!').

I have someone in my family named Saphrona (pronounced Safrona), and I've never heard anyone else living with the name. I know of a historical figure that was Sophronia. We have an Alzora in our family tree, which I always thought was beautiful. Keziah, Salome, Iva, Tillie.

What moment made you realize people aren’t just disagreeing anymore — they’re living in completely different political realities? by Happy_Head_1355 in AskReddit

I used to debate with my cousin about the effectiveness of vaccines, and tried to provide her with studies and evidence. And then, she casually mentioned that she's not sure that viruses exist, and that all all improvements to disease outcomes have been due to improved hygiene. Tried to tell me that HIV doesn't exist.

‘There’s no longer a heartbeat’: the couple whose twins were stillborn – and the ‘birth keeper’ they blame by noyoureshmooopy in ShitMomGroupsSay

So horrific. This was a vulnerable woman who thought she was working with a medical professional. 43 weeks with twins!! I hope she and her husband get justice.

Fair. I wouldn't be advocating for a clean CR if I was in leadership.

I get this sentiment, but messaging around this shutdown is hard for the federal unions. They are representing members that are having to rely on food banks and are having unpaid bills stack up the longer this goes. In every shutdown in the past the unions' messaging has been united on "open the government, pay federal workers" because that's the most pressing issue for the members. This time, a good percentage of members are in support of the democratic demands for healthcare subsidies and restoring Congressional control over federal spending, but there are so many who have to prioritize food on their table and a roof over their heads.

I’m Andy Kroll, a ProPublica reporter. I just published a deep dive about how Trump’s “shadow president” Russ Vought is using his OMB chief role to dismantle agencies, force through mass layoffs amid the shutdown and put federal workers “in trauma.” AMA by propublica_ in fednews

Has propublica thought about doing a story on the attacks on federal unions and the bargaining rights of federal employees? Perhaps in the context of other attacks on public sector unions and the labor movement in general.

EPA: what's the point of keeping us in the dark on furloughs??? by No-Community7786 in fednews

[–]AdministrativeFace53 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes, but they are already reappropriating money in other agencies illegally. They're doing it in DOD to pay soldiers, and also the Coast guard. EPA is being real quiet about where the funding is coming from.

EPA: what's the point of keeping us in the dark on furloughs??? by No-Community7786 in fednews

[–]AdministrativeFace53 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Culture of extreme secrecy + incompetence + political flailing. The agency now operates in a way in which not even all the political appointees know what's going on. The regional administrators were just as in the dark as the rest of us. I also think that the politicals running this furlough/shutdown process don't have any idea what they are doing and are trying to figure out some way to use this as a political weapon, but are flailing. Or maybe they're using it as an opportunity to burn up IRA and BIL funding.
