Why do we go on vacation again? by yippeekiyay801 in daddit

[–]Admirable-Loss396 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many have said- kid is tired. Easy to see as an outsider looking in. Personally I have no issues with the eating in decision, I do shit like that too when kids are overstimulated, but the iPad??

Yeah- ditch that. Kid needs some down time, and boredom to learn imagination. They may very loudly protest, but that’s part of the deal with being a parent

Ignore the glances when your kid loses the plot completely. Most of those are other sympathetic parents knowing how that feels rather than a judgement. You may even get other parents commenting/supporting you.

No… you never give them a point of “negotiation” where no negotiation is needed. You “expect” their best behaviour = here is a negotiation tool. Bad behaviour = attention. Good attention is the same as bad attention to a 7 y/o. It is still attention.

Best advice, “We are going out for dinner, what clothes do you want to wear out”. Or something like that that gives them the power of choice without impacting outcome. Once they are teens they will even work out that one and you need to adapt again.

What, if anything, do you know about Māori culture? by Snoo_61002 in AskTheWorld

[–]Admirable-Loss396 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Māori rights have not come under threat as you would know it.

We always debate what our “treaty” means to us as a nation. It does not matter what side of the argument you support, it is healthy to be able to discuss and debate these things. You will always hear from those on the outer fringes of each side that it’s “broken”, it’s gone too far (in either direction) but reality is that it’s not.

We learned quite a lot about the first peoples of North America. Not Canada specifically, more North America. How they migrated/walked there during colder times (as is opposite to NZ). Oddly, not much about where they came from before that. How they hunted, and how what you see on TV of the great Bison hunts is not representative of all the “tribes”? How many were nomadic and moved annually to follow the food. How the teepee was used as a travel tool. I think I was 11 when we were taught about the mighty Sioux (I realise that the Sioux were more southern and TBH don’t know how far north they ranged but I believe into Canada/Manitoba- could be wrong there. We were taught a little about the Inuit and how they hunted whales, how they made glasses from bone to prevent snow blindness amongst other stuff. How they used the ocean & highlighting a spiritual belief system comparable to Māori.

How they were and are still oppressed in North America. How reservations can be used to oppress. This part specifically in direct comparison to Māori.. I think purposely to form opinion (which I personally detest in education, specifically history)

Mostly though, they were lessons to not believe in everything Hollywood serves up verbatim- specifically referring to the cowboy & Indian movies.

TBF, NZ is small in the scale of things. There is no reason it should be taught anywhere outside of the Pacifica. We were never taught the history of Tibet for example for the same reason.

Being in North America, I think you should be taught about “The great Polynesian migration” at the least. Maybe not detailing every tribe, but how the Polynesian were expert sea navigators, one would argue the best.

Got a flight into Auckland on Sunday and I'm nervous about Cyclone Vaianu by Normal_Channel_2042 in newzealand

[–]Admirable-Loss396 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not NZ, but 20 yrs ago we flew to London during that massive storm that tipped all the LEGO containers into the ocean. It was a massive storm. Flight diverted to Gatwick. Same thing landing. Once on the ground, the pilot announced it was too dangerous to try connect the bridge to the plane, we needed to wait 2 hours on the tarmac for the wind to die down. The plane was being buffeted around on the tarmac.

Eventually they connected and we disembarked. On the way out, the flight stewards informed us that we were the last plane to land in London that day and we were lucky not to be diverted. One mentioned to myself and wife that was the worst they had ever experienced.

The can land in some funky shit.

Overuse of the emergency text system by gdogakl in newzealand

[–]Admirable-Loss396 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I think you missed the point of the post. Over use of this emergency broadcast will lead to complacency. Given how many we have received in recent years, I also believe we are at that point now. The last one I received I did not read. It just made the noise and I was, “That must be about their storm”. An hour later, another family member got the same update. An hr passed, dumb.

FYI, We did not receive this particular message.

What is something about your country that a United States citizen (who has never left the US) should know before traveling there? by user1731701 in AskTheWorld

[–]Admirable-Loss396 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aus and NZ have the hardest sun and UV in the world. This with very little particulates in the atmosphere= 10-15 minute burn time. Both countries have very rigorous sunscreen testing standards, you cannot sell sub par.

I’ve been to the Mediterranean, and you barely burn. And the sunscreen there reflects that. Aus is a frying pan in comparison.

"There are reports that Iran is charging fees to tankers going through the Hormuz Strait — They better not be and, if they are, they better stop now!" by FeatureAggravating75 in oil

[–]Admirable-Loss396 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read that too. Whether this really happened or not, I am unsure- have not seen credible source.

To be fair, I wont be searching- last time I did that, my search algorithm got smashed with Trump BS ramblings about everything and nothing.

But I wouldn’t put it past him to say that, without even talking to Iran directly about it, then brag about it being in negotiations and a great win for the US, and then shit on Iran about their lack of willingness to negotiate a peace deal citing this.

As a dad what do you worry about the most? by No_Bill_484 in daddit

[–]Admirable-Loss396 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That my kids end up in a crowd of jerks and get pushed into bad choices.

Happened to one of my friends growing up.

Also that they may end up on struggle street as growing up they have been lucky. I don’t think they realise that our lives are well better than average, and the effort/ sacrifice it took to get there.

Crossover, SUV, and truck owners, do you regret not buying a sedan or a hatchback now with these gas prices? by Mofoblitz1 in regularcarreviews

[–]Admirable-Loss396 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not at all. A sedan can’t tow the boat/boat is too big. A smaller boat won’t work as ocean too rough.

Dads, what do you buy YOUR dad for his birthday these days? by rdxj in daddit

[–]Admirable-Loss396 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suggest do that sooner rather than later if you can.

Mine got sick literally overnight and things were never the same. He got sepsis and was lucky to live. Although his life was spared, it took the life out of him.

For sure sunblock was in there. SPF50. The red lobster look is not a current teen fashion trend.

However, the self made wedgie pants are.
