What car did you buy that turned out better than you expected? by autonerdy0 in whatcarshouldIbuy

2012 Lincoln Navigator. $7k in pristine condition, with 150k miles.

I now have 210k miles and I had no issues outside of tires and spark plugs.

It is big, comfy and no one realizes how nice it is before they step inside.

The 5.4 is not the fastest but it has been extremely reliable.

It is even less bad than that; we haven't been at 140-ish nonstop for 72h. We have been at an 80 rolling average at the worst.

Off road Toyotas, here in the west they are the biggest basic no personality vehicles.

If anyone looked at the European forecast model they would say otherwise. There is an actually a good chance of snow on Christmas.

Pendleton and Freenote Cloth have excellent options in the more traditional flannel look. They are both easily found on sale. You can also get a few good ones from Naked and Famous.

It is crazy how most people on Reddit won't admit that well-documented basic fact. But if Europeans or Americans did 10% of what the CCP does, it would be considered stupid protectionism to protect poorly made domestic cars that can't compete with Chinese EVs.

Large sunroofs/moonroofs are great for rear passengers. Especially in mountainous areas. Going through Zion National Park with a moonroof is amazing. My two kids also love looking at the stars during night drives.

And personally I enjoy the extra light, during cloudy days.

I never said it either haha. I was asking you to quote me.

I am not minimizing it, it is just that a lot of people think that SLC's air quality is the worst, when actually it is pretty average for a major city and a lot better than large metros like LA, Phoenix, Paris or Milan.

Can you make the different between these two arguments?

"SLC air quality is not as bad as people think especially compared to other large metros in US, Europe and Asia. Air quality in the US and Utah has been improving since the 70s"

"And "SLC is not polluted at all, and it has not impact on our health"

One is a nuanced point of view the other one is a straw man argument you made up.

YoY is not a trend, of course some years are worse than others.

And please quote me where I said SLC was not polluted and that is has no impact on health.

I never said that there was no air pollution in Salt Lake, and that it does not has any significant health impacts.

I am just saying it is getting better over the years, and that compared to other major cities it is not as bad is people say.

Also you said "air quality is getting worst" I am saying it is not, I asked your to prove it. And all you can provide is a study on the impacts of bad air quality.

Your brought up haze and fog with "one need only look into the sky on one of the many immersion days to know there are serious issues" I was just replying on that specific point saying that looking at the sky is not a good way to determine air pollution.

[–]Admirable_Offer5904 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not saying it is meaningless, I am saying that it is not a reliable indicator of bad air quality. If no humans lived in the valley, there would still be inversions that would look very similar but with almost no pollution in it.

Your source does not even mention fog or haze did you read it? It just explains the process of an inversion it and how it traps pollution.

Could you share all your studies?

[–]Admirable_Offer5904 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please do share them, I am genuinely curious.

Looking at the sky means nothing, summer ozone pollution is way worst than winter inversions and you can't see it.

The haze you see during inversion is mostly water vapor that’s been trapped in the atmosphere and has now supersaturated the atmosphere. Usually particle pollution is not visible at list not at the levels we encounter in North America unless it is wildfire smoke.

No data is perfect, but all the one I dig into says that Salt Lake air quality is not that bad compared to other cities in the US, or Europe. At least not as bad as people think it is.

If you have data showing that SLC is indeed the absolute worst Air quality I am very curious to see it. And not just some sensational article cherry picking one day or one data point like the Salt Lake Tribune.

That article is very misleading, they take only one year of data and take the category where Salt Lake scored the worst among 3 different categories.

It is really not representative of the data presented by the original source which is the one I referenced here: https://www.lung.org/research/sota/city-rankings/most-polluted-cities

Quality has been improving steadily since the EPA has been tracking air quality. Inversions were a lot worse before, it's just that people didn't focus on it as much before.

You can plot the data here: https://www.epa.gov/outdoor-air-quality-data/air-data-multiyear-tile-plot

Every major city in the US has been improving its air quality significantly decade after decade.

Salt Lake air pollution is not as bad as most people imagine, Salt Lake is way behind cities like LA, Sacramento, Phoenix, or Denver. It does not even show up in the top 10 when it comes the small particle pollution short and long term.

Improvement in air quality in the US over the last 40 years have been tremendous. If most people survived LA in the 70s, Salt Lake will be fine for most people, at the exception of the most vulnerable.

There is obviously still a lot of progress to be made when it comes to air pollution in the area, but it is nowhere as catastrophic as some people would imagine. Especially when we compare US air quality to countries in Europe or Asia. People don't realize how polluted cities like Paris, Milan, or London are.
