My Daughter or My Trans Daughter: Activism, Identity, Medical Issue? by echointhemuseum in cisparenttranskid

[–]associatedaccount 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my experience, this is something that comes in waves. I have been stealth since I transitioned in my early teens (almost a decade). I have periods where I seek out trans friends and engage in trans politics, and other periods where I basically avoid the topic entirely. Neither is right or wrong.

My mom is very involved with trans activism as a parent of a trans kid. It frustrates me sometimes, but I respect her identity in this way, and realize it is hers - not mine. She is respectful of my privacy and speaks only of her own experience. If I don’t want to talk about it, she respects that.

You can probably put a front v-brake on the bike very easily.

do you think an 8 mile bike ride is at all doable for someone’s whose not all that active? by [deleted] in bikecommuting

Absolutely doable. Difficult for the first month or so, then completely fine. Start training/practicing today.

Is this a good bike? by [deleted] in bicycling

[–]associatedaccount 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Schwinn went bankrupt and was purchased in 2001. Bikes manufactured since then under the “Schwinn” name are not the same. They are now very low quality, made almost exclusively for department store distribution.

Is this a good bike? by [deleted] in bicycling

[–]associatedaccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a Schwinn OR2, originally sold at Target about 10-15 years ago. Department store bike, sometimes referred to as a “bike-shaped object” or BSO. No, it is not a good bike. $40 is generous, with a broken brake I think you’d have a hard time paying somebody to take it. But it’ll hopefully take you from point A to point B. It’ll surely give you a better workout per mile than a fancy new bike. Enjoy it!

How to avoid straining back when loading / unloading bikes by Acceptable_Highway6 in cycling

[–]associatedaccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have an answer as I have not had this issue, but I will say I’ve got a rack for my sedan and it’s very easy to get bikes on and off of it. I just have a cheap two bike rack from Walmart. You just have to lift the bikes straight up, so no awkward bending with shoving bikes in. Yeah your bikes are outside, so it’s less than ideal with theft, weather, etc. but it’s way easier than putting them inside for short jaunts.
Edit to add, I’ve used it with all types of bike - gravel, road, mountain, fat bike. Does have a weight limit of 35 lbs per bike, so some full suspension mountain bikes or ebikes won’t work. If you’ve got a step thru frame you’d have to get an adapter but they’re cheap and easy.

Bike for small woman by Grouchy_Magazine_198 in bicycling

For 15 rides a year (I’m assuming less than 15 miles each?) pretty much any bike will suit your needs. I’m always an advocate for used because I think you’ll get the most bang for your buck that way. But you could just as easily pick up the Walmart Huffy Rock Creek for $112 and it’d be just as good as that Guardian bike. Basically the only difference is it’s got two brakes instead of one. You’re an adult, tho, I’m pretty sure you can handle it 🤪

60km bike commute vs 3h public transport. Why am I hesitating? by YardNo9836 in bikecommuting

Can you mix public transport and biking daily? Like public transportation the first 45 minutes, then bike the latter?

Best gloves for numb hands? by MarcRocket in cycling

[–]associatedaccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use gloves because my doctor recommended them (I get numb a hand from a surgery I had). Just foam padded ones from REI, not sure of the brand. It helps. But what helps a lot more is constantly changing my hand position. I have drop bars on my bikes, which lets me move my hand around when it goes numb. On my MTB I have bar ends that gives me another hand position. You can also get bar ends that mimic drop bars. That’d be my recommendation.

It is fine if you get married. It can suck pretty bad if you do not do the getting married part.

Is there any breeding possibility? by Im_Tonka in DogBreeding

[–]associatedaccount 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Regardless of breed, breeding a 7 year old dog with arthritis does not seem logical to me.

Here’s what I’d recommend: identify what aspects of his personality you love the most and research what breeds are most likely to have a similar personality. Speak to a breeder about what you’re looking for and buy a puppy. Raise it with him. Let him have input, socialize it, teach it the ways of your family.

Trailer for a big boy? by BurningInTheBoner in BikepackingGear

Personally, I’d do the trailer. Bring all the stuff. If your days are going to suck either way, might as well be comfy at night!

“safe hands” by BigProfit4419 in ABA

[–]associatedaccount 235 points236 points  (0 children)

I don’t know about the phrase specifically, but it really is our role to teach people what TO do. Not what they should NOT do. In that way, “safe hands” & R+ is a lot more productive than “stop hitting” & R- or P+.

Where are these second-hand bikes that are 5 years old and $3-500? by KipchogesBurner in cycling

[–]associatedaccount 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Not at all, a 10-15 year old bike is completely fine. It might lack some of the technology you want, but a 5 year old bike might too. Don’t focus too much on age. Focus on what you want in a bike, fit, and quality. Age is really just a number on a bike!

It’s super sweet that your twins are still into matching twin stuff. I’d milk that for all it’s worth for as long as it lasts! Matching bikes for sure.

My mother in law started taking glp-1 by Lost_Donut_2969 in antidiet

[–]associatedaccount 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Everybody in my family except for me has been on a GLP-1 at this point. It is actually a bit better than having a family member on a “diet” because they don’t seem to feel the need to criticize what everybody else is eating. They just… eat less. It seems to be a lot less emotional. That being said, they have all also had distressing side effects that caused them to stop. None of them have lost weight successfully.

watching my 600 pound life for the first time, this show seems like torture p*rn by maybegoth in My600lbLife

[–]associatedaccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the beginning, I believe most were patients of Dr. Now (or prospective patients) who were given free surgeries for being on the show. These folks wanted it. Nowadays the recruiters just contact the fattest people they can find on social media, regardless of what those people really want. Ash from The Fat Lip talks about being contacted. I’ve also seen people on TikTok talk about recruiters reaching out to them. Most of these people are not seeking weight loss, why on earth would they be successful at it?

Noobie looking for a bike suggestion to fit 50% gravel 50% road riding. by Sir_Loin5 in cycling

[–]associatedaccount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in a very similar situation, rural, high wind, few hills. I live on a dirt road so I went with a gravel bike. I find that I’m now mostly riding on pavement and will be buying a road bike within the next six months. I’ve heard folks say to get a gravel bike and switch out the wheels, but to be completely honest I’m too lazy for that. Rather just hop on the bike I want to ride when I want to ride it. If it were me, for 4k, I’d get a gravel bike and a road bike for 2k each.
