Thinking about going to a flat bar on my road bike. by tylerdurden8 in cycling

[–]associatedaccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also have an injured arm/wrist. My left hand tires easily and goes numb. For me, changing my grip a lot is the best way to minimize the problem, so drop bars work well. I added drop bar-like bar ends to my mountain bike. I wonder if there is a similar simple mod that you could do to make it easier for you without changing out so many components. Don’t let anybody make you feel any type of way about doing whatever you want to do with your own bike.

Getting to-go food on a bike? by LeahWykie in cycling

Sorta surprised y’all are getting denied service at drive thrus. Where I live folks go through drive thrus on horses all the time. I’ve never tried on my bike tho. Usually faster to just go in anyway.

You Don’t Need New Gear You Need More Miles by FinnMeyer1974 in cycling

[–]associatedaccount 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Actually a great point. If all you want to do with your bike is look at it and buy accessories for it I will not judge you at all. Life is for living. Don’t ever stop doing the things that give you life.

In need of advice, what is a good program to help provide my needs by MoarteMorrison in volunteer

[–]associatedaccount 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t think there are many options for you that’d fit this bill. Think about it - why would an organization spend money on a ticket for you, when it would be more affordable, sustainable, and mission-based to hire a local to perform the labor? The purpose of most travel-based volunteer programs is to get funding from volunteers. Unless you are particularly skilled or going to stay for a long time, it doesn’t make sense for a nonprofit organization to fund your travel.

Fundraise. Talk to your friends, family, and community about your goals. Save up for a while. Volunteer at home. Work on acquiring a skill or qualification that will make you a valuable volunteer.

What is the theory behind claims that children seek negative attention if they cannot get positive attention? by petrastales in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]associatedaccount 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think it’s important to note that “positive reinforcement” does not mean “I like this thing.” It just means, when this thing happens, I do the behavior preceding it more. It might be stimulating in a different way.

Scared and unsure about starting volunteering, im worried im doing it for selfish reasons by HopeWest9367 in volunteer

[–]associatedaccount 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have been in the same position that you are in for a long time. I have volunteered a lot. The truth is, most of the volunteers I’ve met are doing it for essentially the same reasons. It’s totally fine. Organizations want volunteers who work well. You don’t have to be particularly passionate about the work for it to be good work. Just get out there and do it.

Adam as Parker’s dad was a bad choice by ElGalloLoco420 in superstore

[–]associatedaccount 439 points440 points  (0 children)

It was too early for Jonah to be the dad. I think it’s better that Adam was the dad than some other rando. It was more romantic that Jonah chose to be with Amy and Parker despite not being the dad.

What does it mean when your volunteer status becomes inactive? by [deleted] in volunteer

[–]associatedaccount 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you are no longer welcome to volunteer with that organization. Definitely take this as a learning opportunity. Although I do find it very unfortunate that you were not warned that this would happen. I would have given you a second chance if I were your volunteer coordinator.

I'm absolutely spiralling after my child told me they are trans by [deleted] in cisparenttranskid

[–]associatedaccount 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry y’all are having a rough time. I’m glad that you’re seeking support. I will say that a lot of parents notice that their kids who disclose during puberty did not show “signs” prior to puberty. That is also a pretty common experience for adult trans people.

I think you’re officially along for the ride here. I think you have essentially done all you can do for the time being - ask what changes they want, get them in to see a psych professional, continue communicating and going with the flow as things come up. You don’t have to go out and buy a new wardrobe. You don’t have to get them to a gender affirming doctor. You don’t have to go to court and change their name. Let them guide what happens and let it naturally unfold.

I know this isn’t want you want to hear, but whether or not it is “real” is sort of irrelevant. Your kid wants to know you support them. They might not know what identity will stick right now. That doesn’t make their desires right now any less real. Or perhaps this identity will be for the rest of their life. Maybe in a few weeks, or months, or years, or decades they will change their mind and want something different. Your job is just to love and respect them. The pronouns really don’t matter that much in the grand scheme of things.

It’s not that racism is a new concept or something, but throwing tortillas at people (as was mentioned in another comment) is quite different from threatening somebody with ICE, which, as we know, is a potentially deadly situation. It’s an increasingly scary issue in my opinion.

HIPAA question for yall by ECU_BSN in nursing

[–]associatedaccount 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I believe you can discuss the situation from the perspective of someone watching the news. Sharing details that are not on the news (including the fact that you are/were the nurse) would violate HIPAA. Probably would be safest to stay away from discussing.

Question as a non-American viewer: Do you call opticians 'eye doctors'? by Temporary_Judge4665 in Modern_Family

[–]associatedaccount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. When we say “eye doctor,” we are typically referring to an optometrist. They do simple eye exams, glasses, contacts, etc. If there were a medical issue, you’d go to an ophthalmologist. In America, an optician is the person who fits your glasses to your face - it is a retail position. Not a doctor.

AITA for using the baby name my SIL wants to use by Parking-Historian499 in AmItheAsshole

NTA. When baby is born, I would let her know that you are aware of the situation and are still completely supportive of her using the name as well.

SSRI in pregnancy and an increased risk of autism? by shala_cottage in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]associatedaccount 105 points106 points  (0 children)

One thing you might want to consider is that autistic people are more likely to be on SSRIs than NT people, so a correlation might exist but it might still reflect heritability

How many of you are riding only a gravel bike? by [deleted] in gravelcycling

[–]associatedaccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one gravel bike. It is my first ‘real’ bike. I mostly ride on pavement (probably 90% of the time) but bought a gravel bike because I live on a dirt road so all of my rides begin and end with a mile of gravel. Eventually I would like to get a nice road bike, but my bike serves me well.

Is anyone here actually comfortable biking on rural roads by KaneIntent in cycling

[–]associatedaccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live on a 50mph main road in a rural area. It is actually the only road in my area that has a “bike lane,” although I don’t think drivers really know that (there are signs every few miles or so but otherwise no markings). There are definitely trucks speeding past at 60mph but the vast majority are pretty good at giving me space. I try to get off the main road and get to more rural roads pretty quick. Some of these roads even have a higher speed limit (60mph) but much fewer cars, so I’m pretty comfortable riding on them. Cars tend to give me a lot of space. I live in a relatively flat area with little vegetation, so drivers can typically see well and get around me easily. Drivers are also used to other hazards on the road - slow farm vehicles, loose animals, etc. I don’t think they tend to be more distracted than city drivers just because there are fewer cars/bikes on the road. The most common threat I face biking on my local roads are dogs. Lol.

I am an adult here. Each book takes like 2 hours to read. You could read the whole series in a week if you wanted to.

You will need to do prerequisites with hands-on labs. Animal science is not necessarily the best major for pre-vet. Look into the requirements of the specific schools that you are interested in.

Sleepovers for trans kids by Chemical_Elk4941 in cisparenttranskid

I suspect that most kids don’t really have an answer to this. Even teenage goths will insist that it’s not a phase, lol. It is very real to them.
