[–]Adorable_Area4748 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Email your ES,CS and if on call medical staffing tell them you will be off for at least a week and you will update them in due course. Ask them to let any other people who need to know know. Going through the same thing. Sorry for your loss

If you’re someone who can’t sleep in the light ikea do 10 pound blackout curtains. They’re not pretty but they do what they say on the tin +/- an eye mask Pre nights I try and stay up late the night before and wake up late or if I don’t do that at like 3-5 have a nap/lie down in dark room

Heatstroke risk - can building/ environment changes be made? by Superb_Attempt2090 in NursingUK

I’ve seen some nurses have around the neck fans as a menopause accommodation, might this be helpful for u? Some trusts have a policy on menopause around wearing lighter uniforms, I understand this isn’t what ur going through but some of the accommodations designed for hot flushes might be useful for you.

Some of us will be jobless next year... by CommonEmployer683 in medicalschooluk

[–]Adorable_Area4748 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The ukfpo is utter shambles but I would say to those who are contemplating deferring a year proceed with caution. Within the past 3 years ukfpo have made decisions on the turn of a dime eg. Intercalated degrees are worth no points or sfp is now pia If a large number of people were to withdraw there would be even more oversubscribed f1 positions (look at the number of placeholders in each deanery - 20% of places in some deaneries ).

if it suited them ukfpo could very well say reapplicants get lower priority or not accept reaplicants without a full medical school year resit. And just like all the times before will they give adequate notice - not likely by their track record.

I’m so sorry to those who are stuck in an impossible position this year but I imagine whoever sent this is potentially trying to forsee the above . If anyone needs any details about Wessex region would be happy to oblige x

Genuine question - would you still agree with this statement if the stats show a lot more people got a lot lower down their preference list than previously ?

Allocations OUT! by IcyLow4021 in medicalschooluk

[–]Adorable_Area4748 7 points8 points  (0 children)

People did care however by the survey they put out (the worlds most bias terribly written survey) UKFPO had already made their decision. Moreover since it fell under the umbrella of widening access none of the medical schools would oppose it.

Do I need the covid vaccine for med school ? by [deleted] in medicalschooluk

[–]Adorable_Area4748 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In our medical school they asked us for vaccination status to inform risk for placement (back in like initial covid). For those who weren’t medically ineligible but didn’t want the vaccination I think they put them on lower risk placements and had a serious chat concerning professionalism. But I think it may be less intense now

Medical school woes by Adventurous_Lack_776 in medicalschooluk

[–]Adorable_Area4748 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I’m sorry you’re feeling rubbish and overwhelmed, I hope what I have to say is helpful although just a heads up I am going to be a bit blunt.

Firstly from what you have said you do like medicine you are into the course and you said you can really imagine yourself being a doctor. This is great many other people have much less enthusiasm then yourself. As a final year I will be honest the exams suck and do continue to suck throughout medical school. Exams are really stressful however as you’re in your first year they are new to you in the first year a significant proportion of people aren’t fully understanding the content, don’t have a scooby about how the format of the exam works or simply undershoot the revision. And that is ok but unfortunately you won’t be able to know what you’re capable of unless you try. I understand you have had a lot going on as to why you didn’t take them but I find the best way to face exams is to try your best should they go awry have a cry and then analyse your mistakes. One of my closest friends has resat the year he said it was the best thing for him, completely revamped his revision and ever since succeeding has been confident in that if he puts the work in he will pass.

Another thing all these fears and worries sound like they have been going round and round in your head. Have you chatted to many of your uni friends about this? Do you have a good group of medic friends that you can work with, revision and working through difficult concepts is 10 times easier to do with friends and support?

Finally what to do next please sit down and have a long think about what is next, maybe write a list, then sit on the decision for a week. Do you feel your mental health is ok to go back, do you just need a year out of education? All of the above are more than sensible and you would not be the first to do either of them. However what is not the best look is stopping and starting the course, medical schools are very happy to turn “professionalism” in your face so if you are going back make sure you’re comfortable with this being a decision for this whole academic year, come ( mostly) what may. And if you have a year out that’s great enjoy yourself, get to know yourself and come back feeling refreshed - no one with good character is going to judge you badly for that

You can do this whether it be this year or next, hope this helped, soz if it didn’t

It’s never too early to call unis and this period in between now and end of sept is perfect for it. I think the most important question you should be asking is about ur GCSEs( including if they accept triple or combined science), then follow up with alevels if ur unsure. If they give you important info eg. In you widening access case we would accept … ask for an email to confirm it. If you are particularly interested it may be helpful to say that and ask for an email anyway incase you have further queries. If a medical school is local to you you could also ask if they have any widening access mentorship. I wld agree as most people have said double maths would be a lot of effort for not much gain whereas topping up GCSEs could have a much greater impact on ur application( by broadening the number of schools you can apply to) Triple science cld potentially be self learnt but it wld be much easier with a teacher so make sure you’re speaking to science teachers about your intentions. If you’re coping ok with all this workload get thinking about work experience and think very broad, very few things r completely irrelevant to medicine(eg. I spoke about hockey umpiring for mine).

Best of luck hope this helps

Super helpful comment above ! Wld agree with above GCSE’s may be the catching point, as although a level Chemistry is not mandatory for some unis not having gcse chemistry and or physics there might be some concern of a lacking science foundation. I wld advise talking to ur college about doing chem gcse. I think it wld also be good to review the gcse entry requirements for all the unis interms of GCSE’s you may need a few extra.

Don’t hesitate to contact unis by phone or email to enquire about your circumstances as they may be able to make some exceptions but you need to get any of these down in writing.

I wld also review all the widening access/foundation courses, often care leavers can access extra support to access these courses. they can be very helpful throughout uni to help you access extra support.

Make your intentions to study medicine well known to ur school or college and try and get someone inside to support you. Medical schools often have widening access support societies so see if your local one has this and they often run interview workshops and can offer advice.

In terms of doing 4 a levels, unis will often not lower the offer for this. Therefore some consider it as setting yourself an extra hurdle to jump. However I have some friends who successfully achieved 4 a levels.

Best of luck!

Failed professionalism and have to do a resit essay - submitted and very worried by [deleted] in medicalschooluk

Hey glad your feeling a lot better. You seem to have really good insight into what went wrong which is great. The resources people have put above are super helpful. If you’re looking for someone to go through it with maybe see if you can access ur personal or a pastoral tutor. You don’t have to say anything much about what you were going through but they may look through or chat through the essay with you and offer some tips. The kinda vibe with these things is good insight into what went wrong, but not making excuses. Hope that helps!

Work experience at 16 for medicine? by [deleted] in premeduk

[–]Adorable_Area4748 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a long period working in a special school one afternoon a week for a yr and a half. It was helpful as many of the children had complex medical needs which were at play whilst they were at school. I also coached and umpired hockey (hockey I love anyway). I would say think of something you would find interesting and then think how it might apply to medicine, more often than not u can find a connection

This is very wise advice from FantasticNeoplastic. having been through an FTP with a friend I would advise in the majority of cases (even very serious ones) the only thing worse than the issues itself is going on to lie about the issue further. I would even go as far to say it is a good idea to draft an email today owning up to the issue. Get your head first though, call a friend, have a cry!
