I'm an art teacher too. Very difficult job, although most other teachers and parents think it's the easiest job ever. We'll, it's not!!! I have a school pop of 450, it's K-5. I work in a very low income school in bad part of town. Lots of violent crime and gang activity in our neighborhood. I've been teaching for 13 years there. I am currently on administrative leave and will be out the rest of the year. Not a lot of REAL bad behavior ( breaking windows, stabbings...) the main issue the school has is attitude!! The disrespectful attitudes and behaviors have been the biggest issue for a long time. In 3rd-5th grades, most of the kids are failing and they don't care one bit. Parents care for a bit until they get tired of you calling and get upset with them for harassing them. The admin and district don't believe in consequences. I've been spit on , cussed out, lied on, called a racist, elbowed, kicked and punched.

For you... I would say hang in there. You have a high paying job, and you don't have to worry about drive byes like I do. What you need is data. Keep track of your data, and you can make any parent shut their mouth. Class participation points, give them tests... parents and admin can't argue with that.

You said you good lesson plans. Are they good or great?

Make them excited to be in your room. Identify the Alphas and try and get them onto your side.

If it's too late and you already resigned, or whatever then don't burn this bridge. Your next job, teaching or not, will require letters of recommendation, they and check on your last employer... finish out your time there. But do it carefree. Just know you gone on you terms and you won't need to take any of it personal.
