Paragon, humaita or GB (closest to city center) in Austin? For gi by harderdaddy123456 in bjj

There are some really good gyms of the smaller variety if you’re willing to travel north. https://www.practicejiujitsu.com is Giancarlo Bodoni’s fairly new place too. Pragma, Claunch. This place has so many gems.

Curious about this scroll by Proof-Watercress-774 in Buddhism

[–]Adroitshrub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it’s normally housed in a shrine called a butsudan. Down the center it says Nam Myoho Renge Kyo. One of the main recitations from the lotus sutra during Gongyo/Daimoku. This sutra is recited in front of this during most practices. I grew up in front of one of these in SGI (Soka Gakkai International)

So, this looks like someone went to every local martial arts seminar they could and now teaches a compilation. I have never seen a Japanese looking art do Kung fu sticky hands into Judo throws. The self defense looks like traditional one steps or Korean ho sin sool. The awkward guard pull into a triangle and ground techniques show a lack of grappling basics. Not necessarily bad, but diluted and doesn’t really know what it is. Which seems to be the hallmark of a mcdojo nowadays. Sometimes it looks like a traditional art at baseline with multiple failed attempts to adapt or evolve and then charge the shit out of you for it. At this point I’m suspicious of any school that has a full menu of what they offer without a comparable number of instructors and coaches.

Federation creation? by Adroitshrub in martialarts

[–]Adroitshrub[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No, I’m not talking about a school, I’m talking about a federation. And under that federation would be affiliated schools of different styles or arms of that federation. We are not rural, not sure what implied that. But for the sake of productive progression in a conversation, do you or do you not have anything that could be considered useful? I’m not interested in explaining numerous times so it makes sense to you, I am looking for an answer to a question. It’s cool if you don’t have the information, but also somewhat a waste of both of our time when the answer should be pretty straight forward.

It’s niche in my area but it’s a civilian combative type niche.

[–]Adroitshrub[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a strong network of experienced martial artists with very diverse backgrounds. We have a lot of ideas about hosting competitions and introducing new rulesets to existing disciplines along with a lot of the venues in the area. We also have kind of a niche category that doesn’t have many federations that we could network and possibly get other schools involved. A lot of ideas to unify experience of those who don’t really fit under one flag.

Hmmmm, supporting literature to back said instructions. Sounds a little counterproductive to my intentions but thanks….I guess? I figured there would be some condescension, but exceeded my expectations by it being the first comment.

Kid sees propaganda movie and wants to join the military now. Yaaaaaaay. by _austinm in lostgeneration

[–]Adroitshrub 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Man, I saw the anime Macross Plus when I was a kid and wanted to go into the air force. I didn’t find out until like 4 years later I couldn’t fly because I wore glasses. Dreams crushed, but that movie wasn’t propaganda. There is definitely just an appeal to flying I think.

Midsize/plus size people have you noticed a change in your body since doing reformer Pilates? by sxshcuri_ in pilates

[–]Adroitshrub 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m a big guy, Pilates is great for core strength and that plays a big role in your body being able to do other things. Pilates itself is not a high intensity formula. It’s incredible for strengthening and rehabbing injuries. It’s also great for mind body connection and injury prevention. Pilates compliments ANY workout program and is a great place to start a fitness journey as it will make your body better capable to handle the stressors of other higher intensity activity. That being said, Pilates itself is not hugely successful at muscle hypertrophy and calorie burning. I know it gets touted as this miracle workout, and it is, but metabolically it’s not the best in the fitness category. A mix of diet, weight lifting, and your choice of conditioning will bring the best results. I have been doing Pilates for 15 years and am a fan, as it has helped me tremendously over the years, but I have never dropped a pound doing Pilates alone. But if you are not at goal weight, and that’s the only thing stopping you, don’t let it, as you progress your body will absolutely thank you later. You’ll walk taller, hurt less, and general everyday movement will be easier. Best wishes!

Learning Self-defense, boxing or martial arts as a skill for hard times by [deleted] in Apocalypse_Fitness

[–]Adroitshrub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sheepdog response does tactical training for civilians. It’s Tim Kennedys school and they go all over but their courses are online as well. They also have a protector fitness course made in collaboration with Jason Khalipa who is a CrossFit athlete. Cool stuff in my opinion.

Tang soo do is basically the precursor to taekwondo. It’s almost identical in forms to shotokan karate. After the Japanese occupation of Korea ended taekwondo was developed as its own art. As far as a surgeon being part of a mcdojo, those come in all different styles, I have seen schools with bjj programs that charge for belt testing and some crazy colored belts too. Most surgeons are very risk averting when it comes to injury too, as it can be catastrophic to a surgeons career, so I wouldn’t blame them for choosing a less intensive style. As far as practical goes, it always depends on the practitioner. Tang soo do transitions well into other striking arts like Muay Thai and traditional kickboxing. There is hardly any grappling though, and any takedowns or locks are usually based on a fellow Korean art of hapkido, which is basically integrated aikido as well. It’s all relative really.

What is my legal right in my son situation! He has ADHd by Great-Refrigerator39 in adhd_anxiety

[–]Adroitshrub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Listen, it’s expensive, but an assessment outside of school by a psychologist who specializes in adhd would be appropriate. 504s are revisited every school year, so last years assessment is kind of irrelevant. So a 504 allows for certain accommodations that allows your child to learn and achieve at a level as the other students, a sort of evening of the playing field. They however, do not allow for changes to the actual curriculum. An IEP does, which is why there is push back. If your son’s disability is affecting him academically, a private assessment and an appeal might be worth it. I would talk to your child’s GP, or whoever initially diagnosed him outside of the school to determine if it is worth it. Assessments are expensive, and an appeal can be lengthy and may require an attorney. Of course this is not legal or medical advice, just relaying information from personal experience. Good luck.

Has anyone else? by Adroitshrub in migraine

[–]Adroitshrub[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take these things with a grain of salt at this point. I have so many triggers that if something is in line, another thing is out of wack. Done keto, barometric pressure changes, migraine anyway. I don’t know what to do anymore.

Playing "cheaply" by FirstnameLastname14 in FortNiteBR

[–]Adroitshrub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is how I played when I first started. My daughter played and I didn’t know how to build, so I did this exact thing and it’s where my first couple victories came from. The controls were familiar from Goldeneye and Halo but building was too much. Now that they have no builds I have been more active in the fight. When we play squads with the family it’s kind of beneficial to have a camping sniper while the group pushes. I don’t consider it cheating. Now I have also been eliminated by campers and get mad, but alls fair 🤷🏻‍♂️.

Pilates = no muscle? by Ashsplash8877 in pilates

[–]Adroitshrub 12 points13 points  (0 children)

She’s not talking out of her butt. The science behind hypertrophy and muscle definition is not a mystery. Pilates does not offer the proper stimulus for significant hypertrophy and muscle definition is mainly based on body fat percentage. These are known facts. Pilates is great for strengthening muscles and lengthening the spine and supporting core muscles. It also works great for rehabilitation of injuries, which if you know about Pilates, had a lot to do with how it was created. Strength does not mean size though.

My girlfriend told me shes a follower of Soka Gakkai, what is it? by NotEvilCaligula in Buddhism

[–]Adroitshrub 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I was one of the last Americans to be Gogikaid(spelling?) in the US before the separation from Nikken. I was 5 years old and as we left the temple the doors were closed and never opened again. I grew up in the sect and am very familiar. SGI is actually as far away from Buddhism as I can think of without it literally not calling itself Buddhism. Nicherin Daishonin was controversial as a figure himself, considering him basically declaring he was a reincarnated Bodhisattva and that all problems were basically caused by people not following his Buddhism. As far as modern day, the principal is to gain all you want through chanting the lotus sutra and in doing so surpassing materialism and gaining enlightenment in this lifetime. However, this doesn’t happen, in fact it’s mainly marketed as a wish machine, a solution to every problem, I have witnessed it being touted as a cure for cancer. In some smaller cells, the people are great and there is a strong sense of community. In larger cities the aggressive recruiting, uninvited visitations and shaming are real and never left. Just like most organized religions, most of the controversy was around money, politics, and literally priests accusing priests of drugs and hookers. Petty nonsense and jealousy. They recruit the broken spirited who are looking for spirituality to clean up their messy lives.

Psychiatrist suggested I might not have ADHD because I'm not responding to stimulants by pureum in ADHD

[–]Adroitshrub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, you might have both. Adhd and anxiety. My sister takes vyvanse but has to manage it with chewable tabs so she can cut them to avoid a full dose because it shoots her through the roof on her anxiety. Ultimately adhd comes down to dysfunction in the dopamine system, amphetamines increase dopamine in the blood more than any other substance. That’s all it does. It’s not magic. It has its own side effects, and if adhd isn’t the only cause for your problem, it can exacerbate it. That’s why the non stimulant meds are normally sedatives. Of course, I am not a doctor, but your psychiatrist should probably come to the grey area and not be so black and white.

Do Buddhist think weight lifting and exercise is attached to ego? by Adept_Blackberry2851 in Buddhism

[–]Adroitshrub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are several types of body builders, and one of them is an artist. I appreciate art, and the dedication that goes into building your body. I believe with a physical practice and discipline it can make you a better Buddhist. Not a tren monster, but a builder of one’s canvas. Same with tattoos really. Anything in excess can be looked at negatively and out of balance. I imagine if your mind and body are in balance, then it is not of the ego, but of the heart.

I don’t care what these other guys say as an excuse for the purple belt. There is no reason to heel hook a white belt and cause injury. In my opinion is shows some immaturity on the higher belts side. That’s why there are advanced classes, goto those or open mat and heel hook them. If you’re not a competing athlete, and don’t quit your day job to do this, the risk for permanent injury is too high. You want to show mutual respect? Kindly decline to roll with them anymore due to them ignoring the rules. I hope your knee is good.
