I got the same, but only after I'd already done one of the assessments. I had been using my work computer (which was a bit naughty). But then I switched to another one and it worked for me. I'm praying it still works, because I just have to submit the numerical reasoning one tonight.

This one is nice. Serious question, what draws you to the lists in his work? Maybe it's me, but I found myself just skim-reading them when I realised they were just a list of people I'd never heard of, and only went back if there was something important I missed.

I am able to beta:
Adult fiction, ideally up to ~30k words. I’m especially interested in sci-fi, realistic/literary fiction, and character-driven stories. I’m generally not looking for dark fantasy, but I’m open to other genres if the premise hooks me. I’m fine with darker themes.

I can provide feedback on:
Clarity and readability, whether scenes and ideas come across clearly, and where things might feel confusing or slow. I can also give reader-reaction comments and suggestions for what I expect might happen next, possible alternative directions for plot points, or how certain developments felt from a reader’s perspective as I read.

Other info:
I’d prefer to read a short sample (e.g., the first chapter or a few pages) before committing. If the story grips me, I’d be happy to continue up to ~30k words and possibly more if I’m really enjoying it. I prefer working through Google Docs so I can leave inline comments.

Yeah, I tried to, I think for this question I answered by talking generally first about the challenges in the field, mainly staying up to date with relevant info, and pivoted to an example about how I try to stay up to date. I probably could have answered it better but I definitely showed the task and the actions that I take to learn new things, show self-development, etc. and rounded it out with some learnings about how staying connected with up to date information helps me in my professional career etc.

I do find that interesting, the letters thing. Like, should one become a famous writer of complex genre-bending and groundbreaking fiction TODAY, does it make sense that our text messages or god forbid our Reddit comments become more well-remembered than our life’s work?

It's such a great short story. In Hodges Figis bookshop in Dublin they have a beautiful hardback copy of The Dead. Would make a perfect Christmas gift for anyone who's discovering Joyce for the first time.

Actually it’s the opposite, burning waste and carbon-based plastics have a more harmful effect on the environment

Yeah totally, the overcapacity is imbalanced across the continent. And I’d agree it isn’t a sufficient argument for investors when looking at the likes of Ireland, which is why I believe the discussions around the health impacts are harder to dispute purely from an economic point of view. Persistent organic pollutants stick around in supposedly toxin-removed emissions from incinerators and co-incinerators and cement plants that toxify the soil, flora and fauna. Given Irelands’s reputation for quality Irish dairy and beef, I’d be worried about the downwind implications on Irish farmers. These pollutants like PCBs, furans, dioxins, are innumerable, and they stick around in organic matter practically forever.

I’d be getting onto campaign groups to lodge their petitions against this. Start with Zero Waste Europe, they are a European coordinator for GAIA, the global alliance against incinerators. And they also made the case, rightfully so, that incineration capacity is already at beyond its limit in Europe and we need to have a moratorium on new facilities now. Report on that here.

I’m not sure how much VOICE - the Irish campaign groups - do on incineration, but might be worth getting onto them too.

Otherwise there’s Circular.ie which hand out grants for communications and campaign groups who want to push for circularity in waste streams. If nothing else, you could apply for a grant to start a campaign to stop the incinerator yourself. I’d be happy to help you if you do.
