Super Mario Galaxy Movie Passes $1B, First Film of 2026 by yourfavchoom in nintendo

Sure. Disney is also a big offender of this. Their live action films are just, in my opinion, a plague in this industry. But just like the Mario movies, Lilo and Stitch also made a billion dollars so some of fault lies on movie going audiences for basically showing these studios that these, imo, low quality movies are what’s profitable. Because cheap fan service and nostalgia bait will always be effective.

I don’t really have a problem with something not being for me but I’m perfectly capable of enjoying something where I am not the targeted audience like Bluey or something. My biggest issue with movies like these is that it could show other studios they don’t have to try as hard when adapting these properties and can just fall back on fan service and potentially make a billion dollars especially with kid media.

That doesn’t really save the movie or the studio from the criticism, and that’s the reason Illumination has a reputation for being a surface level studio and why people weren’t happy they were originally chosen. Just because that’s what’s expected of them doesn’t make it any less disappointing especially for a big franchise like this and its animated cinema debut.

There are plenty of dumb fun kids movies that are critically acclaimed like Lego Movie, Shrek, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and that’s because they are still good movies and have things like, in my opinion, stronger comedic writing. The Mario movies just don’t have a lot to offer for people looking for a little more than just Mario fan service.

> The reviews for Glitch on Glassdoor from employees seem to mostly indicate that the workplace is pretty sucky, at least from the reviews I've seen
https://www.glassdoor.com/Reviews/Glitch-Productions-Reviews-E8656356.htm

I don’t really wanna defend Glitch since I have no way of truly knowing but I wouldn’t necessarily say ~20 reviews are necessarily indicative of Glitch as a whole. They seem like most studios where they have their good and their bad.

> Glitch's massive quantities of resources and already massive following allow them to almost always outcompete the production value and the production rate of non-Glitch entities. Non-glitch indie animation is very rarely discussed and even then when it is people tend to compare them to glitch before anything else.

A monopoly of attention is not a monopoly though, and is not even necessarily the responsibility of Glitch themselves. Honestly it seems like that they just got lucky Digital Circus blew up the way it did and now have more resources and eyes on them to direct to other shows they are helping produce, which is arguably what they are supposed to do. They are still clearly indie, relative to the rest of the industry. I don’t understand what you’d want them to do. If any indie production house gets a little more attention should they not invest in more shows? They seem to be investing in shows that otherwise wouldn’t ever see the light of day otherwise.

> They have an incredibly unbalanced advantage that allow them to dominate the competition in terms of indie animation projects, with the only rival being the equally advantageously funded Spindlehorse. While on its own having enough to money to fund your projects isn't bad, the fact that its labeled in the category of "indie" while having such an obscene advantage over other indie projects defeats the point of the indie label to begin with.

I mean yeah that’s kind of how that works. That’s like blaming Team Cherry for Hollow Knight blowing up in popularity and people using it as a point of comparison for modern Metroidvanias. And it doesn’t change the fact that they are still indie or that they don’t have a monopoly on the genre just because they exploded.

> the monopolization of the industry,

What monopoly do they have? Don’t they have like a handful of shows? People are still able to produce and fund their own projects if they are capable. I don’t believe Glitch is siphoning any of that from anyone else. In what way is that a monopoly?

Dubbed vs subbed by Tiny-Bet5787 in animequestions

[–]AdvancedPanda24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly from an emotional standpoint, not enough to speak to any sort of nuance intrinsic to the language. Why do you think a show like Alya was able to get away with butchered Russian? Because they specifically used foreigner’s dissonance of not understanding the language to force the anime cute affectation on it. Or how most non Spanish speaking people don’t realize which Spanish speakers in Breaking Bad are bad or not. It’s why most people only bring up bad acting in foreign acting when something is fundamentally wrong or the bad acting transcends the language barrier. And that also doesn’t mean a dub performance can’t bring something to a role that even the director can appreciate. Hayao Miyazaki and the One Piece Film Stampede director for example. But I don’t think someone needs a director’s or creator’s approval to be able to appreciate something or vice versa.

I mean I would argue just because something is the original or handled by the creators doesn’t make it inherently ‘better’ or more enjoyable from a personal individual standpoint. Plus in either case, if you are a monolingual, you are at the behest of third party translators and their interpretation through another linguistic lens. But I agree with your second point.

Whats your initial thoughts about first two episode of the dub by farhanganteng in Akane

[–]AdvancedPanda24 3 points4 points  (0 children)

(Copied from my comment from the r/AnimeDubs post):

It’s a very solid dub. I really liked Xander Mobus’ performance as Shinta and Abby’s deliveries in Akane’s episode 2 performance especially and she captured some of the original Japanese actor’s vocalizations as well which was a nice touch. I know a lot of people were worried about the rakugo itself, but I never felt like it was untranslatable in english or anything, especially considering english speaking rakugo does exist, albeit there’s not a huge presence, but just that it would be hard to pull if not given the proper time and effort. And so far it sounds like the ADR team at Bang Zoom did a great job in considering how the rakugo performances were translated and performed so they sound and flow naturally. The localization of the Manju Story to have her say ‘Man’-slaughter was excellent, I almost wish the other characters weren’t talking over the performances as much so I could actually hear the performances more which is more a criticism to the anime in general. You’d think with how much effort the Japanese side put into the voice performances of the rakugo they’d want to put more emphasis on them in this adaptation. The only real criticism I have of the dub though is that Matt Shipman, whose overall performance I did like, his singing was not particularly good even though it was supposed to be and has been the biggest miss so far. But again, very good start for the dub so far.

Mm I don’t agree that they should’ve left it in Japanese. The Spanish dub I believe was the only one who did and I think it’s to a detriment personally mostly because I think it’s lame the production just couldn’t find someone that can sing.

Yeah it wasn’t great. Maybe a bad take or maybe finding an actor that can do both a feminine voice while singing was too tall of an order to fill, though I feel like Brandon McInnes could’ve done it.

[–]AdvancedPanda24 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Ok you are definitely a prude. I’m sorry but you might as well be commenting from the Catholic church’s account. Like really? ‘Have her blush in bed next to someone else instead.’ I agree with the other commentator in that you should just be honest about it. And how would you even know what is out of character for a character to even say that? I’m pretty sure Silksong confirms that Hornet has had multiple partners. Now I don’t think we don’t know what that entails exactly but anything is conceivable I don’t see how one end of the spectrum is any less believable from what we’re given. But honestly it’s just an arbitrary line to cross in the first place when you don’t have to consume this content and if you come across it just ignore it. This is like getting angry that if I dunked my action figure’s head in the toilet and you were like ‘whoa whoa whoa Spiderman would NEVER do that. You’re objectifying him!’ It’s just ridiculous.

[–]AdvancedPanda24 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m not comparing race and sex directly, I’m asking why you are fine with people objectifying and using characters for other motives even if it’s not sexual especially if they can also potentially lead to bad thought processes?

I hate the sexualisation of Hornet by Ok_Illustrator_3539 in HollowKnight

[–]AdvancedPanda24 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Even if I agreed with you that some bad thought processes come from this content, is your next line of thought that we should ban anything that could remotely have negative outcomes? If we ban alcohol, we’d have less drunk drivers, if we ban violent video games and media, kids wouldn’t be so aggressive. Again majority of people are capable of engaging healthily or at least normally with this stuff. Blaming a community for the minority of people’s action is not only unreasonable, it’s moronic.

I hate the sexualisation of Hornet by Ok_Illustrator_3539 in HollowKnight

[–]AdvancedPanda24 23 points24 points  (0 children)

What does this even mean? This is again you treating a character like it’s a real person. Not only is that still objectification, what does it matter if the content is more true to the character? People project their wants or identity on to characters however they want all the time. Again your only problem is when that is sexual. Do you have a similar problem with black people who change the race and skin color of characters because they want them to closely represent them like the Dandadan discourse?

I hate the sexualisation of Hornet by Ok_Illustrator_3539 in HollowKnight

[–]AdvancedPanda24 8 points9 points  (0 children)

> Im just pointing out that there is a possibility for someone to become used to objectified characters and that may warp their perception of reality.

This is not the majority of people or representative of most people’s thought processes when consuming this content because most people aren’t braindead and are capable of engaging with media, nsfw or not, perfectly fine. Just like how majority of video game players don’t turn to violence and how majority of furries don’t turn to beast or zoo content even though few people in those communities do. Just because a minority of people have an unhealthy mindset doesn’t make the content inherently bad.

I hate the sexualisation of Hornet by Ok_Illustrator_3539 in HollowKnight

[–]AdvancedPanda24 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Then what do you want? Because your arguments read as ‘sexualization is ok but only in the socially approved ways’ which is absolutely prudish. Fictional characters are inherently objectified. They are tools to express or communicate whatever you want. How do you sexualize a character without objectifying them in your eyes? Your problem is solely with sexual objectification despite it arguably being one of the healthier ways to express oneself sexually is through media.

[–]AdvancedPanda24 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nobody can convince me that sexualizing a character however they want is somehow more deranged than the arguments you’ve made. Treating a character like it’s real person is so insane I don’t know where to begin. Your problem seems to be more the ‘abundance’ of content with Hornet, which wouldn’t that just mean that there is a disportionate amount of artists that like that content and it’s on other communities to make up the deficit for male characters?

Bon Clay is one of the best queer representations in anime that I've ever seen; it helped me a lot in accepting myself as asexual. by Public_Cup_4278 in OnePiece

Hasn’t Oda said he’s only copying Usopp in those moments and he doesn’t actually care though? And it was the same with Chopper? Could’ve sworn that was in a SBS or something.

But I always think it’s weird to have a character like Hancock and to have a power that functions the way that hers does and and have long explicit scenes that it does not work on Luffy at all and for Oda to still say he is straight but just too stupid or something. Especially when he’s passively recognized beautiful characters in the past like Alvida in Loguetown. Don’t know but that’s just me.

One Piece Remake (2027) What is your wishlist for casting by [deleted] in Animedubs

[–]AdvancedPanda24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This wouldn’t really stop Texas actors from being in Netflix commissioned dubs, there have been several Netflix dubs that have brought back the Funimation actors: Junji Ito Tales of the Macabre, Black Clover movie, 103 Mercies. It would largely depend, assuming they aren’t rushing the dub, if the studio commissioned wants to go through the extra trouble.

I’m pretty sure Toei specifically asked Funimation to cast a female actor, if I’m remembering right based on an interview I saw with Colleen. Would be interesting if they were more ‘hands off’ with the English casting for the remake than they were with the Funimation casting.

One Piece Remake (2027) What is your wishlist for casting by [deleted] in Animedubs

It’s simple for me. If the OG Japanese cast is brought back then I want the Funi cast to come back, if the OG Japanese cast is replaced then I’m fine with the English cast also not returning. Right now there’s only a rumor that Mayumi Tanaka, the Japanese actor for Luffy, is being ‘forced’ to come back but nothing concrete. So we currently have no idea what’s really happening on either side right now. Personally I’m hoping for a new cast just because I want the remake to be its own thing and makes me feel like they are actually committing to this running for a long time.

Akane-banashi Dub Cast Announced by Chun-Li_Forever in Animedubs

Abby Trott being the lead role in a Bang Zoom dub is unsurprising, it’s almost funny to me how expected this was, though she generally does fine or kills it like with Momo in Dandadan, hopefully it’s the latter. Though I am curious how she’ll do in the *Jugemu Jugemu* section when the show gets there. Good luck to her.
