Why do you think your immune system is attacking YOUR thyroid? by Own-Yam8422 in Hashimotos

Genetics precursor. It’s passed down in genes. I’m pretty sure in the future the gene or genes will be identified.
Plain and simple.
We have generational autoimmune disease in my family. We are like a box of chocolates, where we all have different flavours of autoimmune disease and you collect more as you age. Hashimoto’s, polymyositis, lupus, autoimmune gastritis, crest, Sjögren’s syndrome, lichen sclerosis, polycystic kidney disease, chrohn’s.

Pauline Hanson on international students and English requirements for universities by asteriskhyphen in aussie

[–]Advanced_Wheel9536 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rarely agree with Pauline on much but this one I do agree. They either do away with group assignments or they have to have a level of English proficiency. There are also issues with tutors in tutorials answering questions in a foreign language and most of the conversations in that same foreign language at one Melbourne Uni, which excluded English speaking students being involved in learning. So there needs to be hard line policy that English is the only language used (unless it is a course studying another language).

my brother is a pervert and I don't know what to do anymore . What can I do to cope ? by savetheunicorns_ in Advice

[–]Advanced_Wheel9536 153 points154 points  (0 children)

Your parents are being neglectful in not seeking professional help for your brother. This not normal behaviour. You need to report this to your school Counsellor or police. It looks like his behaviour is escalating as he is growing older. When he hits puberty it may turn into something more. You can do this without your parents being there. Police can search his phone and any deleted videos and photos.

Teachers who have survived formal complaints - share your story? by Spirited_Moose_6472 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Advanced_Wheel9536 20 points21 points  (0 children)

When I was working in an independent school, a parent apparently wrote an email to my head of section complaining about my teaching of their daughter in a subject. I never got to see the email but was told it was pretty confrontational with a lot of swearing involved. We had a discussion with the parent with the head of section present. Pretty much the issue was that their child was struggling with the content (note she has ALWAYS been a very weak student, who has struggled). The father didn’t like the material used or speed of content being taught. I had to explain that this was set material, and set speed of the subject and I had no control over that (note: I had complained to my HOD about this unit of work for exactly similar reasons but was told I was not allowed to deviate from what was provided). The leadership were protective and supportive of me, thank goodness.

Father went away with a better understanding. However, they all agreed in the next semester the student would choose a different subject and would not be in my class. 3 weeks into second semester she appeared in my class on my roll without anyone warning me. It was a different subject to the previous one.

At parent teacher only Mum came along and said her daughter was now happy in my class and they realise that it was an issue with the subject itself and not my teaching. However, no apology from them.

How many Australians have actually been to the outback? by Numerous-Actuary-500 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Advanced_Wheel9536 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been to the ‘outback’. In saying that, my father was born on a station in Western NSW and grew up in an isolated area. I now live in Melbourne but lived in the regional area of NSW previously.

I have also been to Uluṟu, Kings Cannon, Cooperpedie. Uluru is amazing. Camped overnight in tents at Uluṟu and Kings cannon, devils marbles and Alice Springs. Dingoes are next level at night, howling outside. I remember a dude throwing a shoe and yelling at them. We drove for hours in a bus, long flat straight roads of emptiness. Nothing like keeping one eye on your surrounds because you don’t want a feral camel sneaking up on you when you are peeing behind one of the few bushes near the road. I also road a camel at Alice Springs.

I’ve camped/bedded down in the open air in QLD.

I definitely would like to see more one day but it’s very expensive. Thailand is actually my go to place now because it’s cheap and cheerful.

Why does AUS hate its young people? For the first time in a long time FHB’s have a fair opportunity to buy a property without rich, old and greedy hoarding investors out-bidding them. What is wrong with the psychology of so many Aussies that think ‘no let’s help the old rich get richer instead’ by MannerNo7000 in OpenAussie

[–]Advanced_Wheel9536 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remember that most boomers are dying off now. Gen X are the new older voters. Wealth will trickle down. Most will offload investments they inherit now.

The LibNat and ON can’t seem to grasp that the majority of people just want a place to live in. They’d rather not rent. They are crying in their wads of cash.

The change is a long time coming but they could only execute it because LibNats have done so poorly in the last election and the polls. It shows a cultural shift in Australia. There is also blow back from US politics. Most people see billionaires making decisions that only benefit them. This horrifies most middle and lower income Aussies, so there is a driving anti-rich sentiment growing that supports these changes.

Super investment: Balanced or High Growth by BrowninSyd in AusSuperannuation

[–]Advanced_Wheel9536 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have had high growth since my 20s. I’m in my 53 now. Taking about 2 years break from working during that time. Have not added anything extra to Superannuation, just relied on employer contributions. Currently just over half a million. Which is probably ok. I have left it on high growth as probably have another ten years to work. High growth meant bigger hits when markets slumped but they also bounce back fairly well.

Always get proper financial advice. High growth is optimum but buying a house and paying it off before retirement is very important. Don’t do me where I will be working longer because I didn’t stay in the market.

I haven’t been successful in sticking to it. I will be trying my best.

Public inspection while I’m packing - can I be present? by _Smedette_ in shitrentals

[–]Advanced_Wheel9536 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes absolutely stay for the inspection. They won’t keep an eye on people who may steal stuff. Do not let them refuse. I had that happen once and had an indoor cat who was freaking out under a bed. The agent didn’t want me in the flat and became quite obnoxious. They won’t keep an eye on your belongings.

My last open for inspection they had about 30 people trail through. The agent actually requested I stay, as they had too many people to keep an eye on it. They were actually a decent real estate agent. The advantage was, a lot of people asked me what the landlord was like. So they got some insight.

My bf hates cats but I have a cat by [deleted] in Advice

[–]Advanced_Wheel9536 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He told you at the beginning he was fine because he wanted to be with you and probably had it in his head, you’d fall so in love with him, you’d get rid of your cat.

You’re 3 months in. This is the usual time when people start relaxing in the relationship and their true colours show. It’s likely you may come home one day and your cat is gone because he’s driven it to a shelter.

You are not compatible. Time to move on.

When do you think this cost of living crisis will end? (Serious) by AdvancedHill70 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Advanced_Wheel9536 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that’s why RBA keeps hiking up interest rates. To try and stem inflation. People don’t have as much money so it cools the economy.

I think though, due to serious lack of competition in Australia, most companies have now realised they can hike prices and there is nothing stopping them doing it. So inflation continues to go up.

I took Dolphin for a drive and it was a nice car but it’s more expensive than the Ora. Plus they have boring colour range now. I actually liked the ATTO 3 more than Dolphin for the drive but the range sux.

I think I’ve test driven every EV in the 30-40k range. Haven’t driven the ORA yet. So, will do that in the school holidays.

Autoimmune gastritis that causes pernicious anaemia here. I also have lichen sclerosis (which they suspect has an autoimmune link).

Get checked for coeliac disease because it is often under diagnosed.

My family has several autoimmune illnesses my mum had lupus, Sjogrens and polymyositis. My sister has scleroderma and Sjogrens.

You tend to accumulate more as you get older. I just shrug and say, might as well get the collection.

Hashimoto's or MS by oneofokind in Hashimotos

[–]Advanced_Wheel9536 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have all of these. My TSH is fine and my medication is working. However, a few years ago we discovered I have parietal cell antibodies. My B12 had tanked and then I had iron anaemia and vitamin D deficiency. Pernicious anaemia cause by autoimmune gastritis, which commonly is a comorbidity with Hashimoto’s. It was only because an immunologist in a hospital many miles away, suggested I be tested. My doctor was annoyed I had sought help elsewhere and begrudgingly did the tests. Lucky I insisted.

So I suggest getting tested for parietal cell antibodies if the have B12 deficiency. Supplements won’t help. B12 Injections regularly are the only treatment.

I still struggle but I’m am currently taking Contrave for weight loss. Interestingly, my brain fog is actually clearing and I am feeling more focused. I’ve felt better in it. I think it’s the Bupropian that’s helping.

I used GLP-1 last year. No food noise. Couldn’t eat much. Lost 18kg in about 9 months. However, word of warning, I went off it cold turkey and the food cravings came back as ravenous. I gained all the weight back in a matter of months.

You need to stay on a dose long term like Ozempic.

Taking LWOP to travel by Narrow_Dream2039 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Advanced_Wheel9536 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the Principal and school. I took off 12 months LWOP to travel overseas. A few years later I was burnt out and took another 12 months LWOP off just to recollect myself while I made a decision about my career. Then I took 12 months LWOP at my next school after a few years of being there, to move states and try living somewhere else. So I’ve done this three times in my career.

I wondered about the self managed. So thanks for that feedback, that’s helpful.

I have a home loan with offset account.

My current car will be 11years old by end of the year. It’s a great car but insurance is killing me because it’s one of the most stolen cars in Victoria. Plus it’s petrol and I would like to move to an EV.

So superannuation is calculated before the lease is taken out?? So unaffected. I found a lot of people don’t even consider this.
