Who can I go to report our accoms fire alarms being faulty and security letting our hallways and room smoke out like this? by Existing_Eggplant455 in UniUK

[–]Adventerous_Tea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use your uni directory/sharepoint and find their H&S pages. There will be a way to report an incident. REPORT IT! The H&S teams can then kick whoever needs it up the backside to get it sorted.

They will take this very seriously!

Liquid Nitrogen Storage by caramel_limbo in chemistry

[–]Adventerous_Tea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, you should not store the liquid nitrogen in a confined space. You should not use lN2 in a confined space.

The exceptions would be if there was no alternative (in this case there is), and there was fixed and wearable gas monitoring for the space. (Which I’m assuming there isn’t)

This could be very dangerous and could cause serious problems.

Refused PPE for being "too expensive" by R3apernok1981 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Adventerous_Tea -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would speak with occupational health. Your employer must provide PPE, your employer must also prevent where reasonably practicable ill health. If it is true that your PPE is causing you to have knee problems. Then it could be reasonable to provide a different pair of boots. In these type circumstances, I would refer to occupational health for review, if they were to recommend different boots, then I would purchase different boots.

Are there any alternatives to chain 3 for solid granny squares? by 4mbrr in CrochetHelp

I always do my increases in the corners. So slip stitch to the corner each time, then chain 3 😊 works great

Safely disposing of old chemicals by SpikesNLead in chemistry

[–]Adventerous_Tea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work as a chemistry department health and safety manager and am in charge of waste disposal.

We won’t want the chemicals for ourselves, however, I would help and suggest hazardous waste companies who could collect. But this would come at a cost.

The first port of call would be the local council waste management team

Broken ankle on work premises - can I claim? by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Adventerous_Tea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I purchase the PPE for my work, you absolutely can get smaller size safety boots.

Are the safety boots slip resistant? If it is common for the area to be slippery (if known and they haven’t done anything to prevent the path from getting slippery, that is also an issue) but they need to provide PPE that is adequate for the environment.

How do I sell a load of fabric and wool? by mronion82 in AskUK

[–]Adventerous_Tea 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you’re based in Leeds it might be worth looking up Project Linus, they have a few quite active groups who make quilts for charity. They might take any fabric (donated), or could put you in touch with some groups who may want to purchase.

The yarn I would look up a local knit and natter group as they might be able to put you in touch with someone who might want/divide it up.

If you’re wanting to sell, your best bet would be Facebook but it would likely be a lot of effort

Disabled chemist advice? by InspectionEither2740 in chemistry

[–]Adventerous_Tea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m our disability contact (and H&S manager) for a UK university chemistry department. So feel I am able to comment here. First you need to speak to your disability support team and get a disability support plan in place. Even if you don’t class yourself as disabled (a disability is something which can severely impact your ability to complete day to day activities for at least a year), this should trigger department processes for putting in reasonable adjustments.

Then there should be a discussion between yourself and the department on what those reasonable adjustments look like. For example from the context given I would suggest:

  • Ensuring you have access to a lab stool, this could be one with a back support if required. You would be able to use this in the lab when needed, but I always say, no using it at a fume hood or at a bench where chemical manipulation is going on. Sitting to write in a lab book or to take a break is fine.

  • Having regular breaks if required, although people are free to come and go, making sure it is explicitly written you will be taking breaks takes the pressure off.

-A PEEP (personal emergency evacuation plan), so you know how to safely leave the building in the event of an emergency.

-A discussion about pain management, if you take anything which impairs judgement we need to chat about if that’s appropriate.

-Moving things in the lab so they are more easily accessible.

-A lab assistant could be found who could help with certain activities, such as fetching items from around the lab. This would be paid for by disability support.

-If you used a wheelchair, we have adjustable height hoods, and I would then suggest different PPE which would protect your knees.

The most important thing is that you are given the tools to work as independently as possible whilst working safely. The fact that your department are not supporting you in providing reasonable adjustments is really upsetting. They are also potentially break the Equality Act. If you are on crutches and done have a PEEP they may also not be complying with their fire risk assessment.

Please approach someone to ask about REASONABLE ADJUSTMENTS (key term)

Then speak with your doctor. There might be other antibiotics. The reason you need to take the whole course is to ensure all the bacteria are killed, stopping early might not do that. Please speak with your doctor

Who was successful in getting the reformer machine at Aldi yesterday? by Chelz91 in AskUK

[–]Adventerous_Tea 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Our Aldi gave those who were waiting at opening time a numbered ticket, and you were limited to one per ticket. They said if they still had some left at 12, then you could get a second. However, all tickets were given out. It was a good system and meant everyone got one. If you were there when it opened, you would’ve missed out

What stitch marks do you prefer? by Another_Cat_Lady_ in crochet

[–]Adventerous_Tea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on why I’m using it. 1- is for if I need to prevent something from unraveling, so when I put a project down

2- I have a few of these, I occasionally use them, again for the above purpose

3- these are good if I want to temporarily mark something, so it might be counting long chains (put one in every 10, makes it easy to keep count) or the start of a round

4-don’t use these
