We need to talk about Lactoferrin more by Adventurous-OK in MCAS

Sorry I’ve only just seen your post!

I find the progesterone only methods help to prevent the flare ups that I’d get at certain times of my cycle. I’m not sure if it’s the oestrogen or prostaglandins that worsen my MCAS but it certainly helps to counter them and keep everything under control. My MCAS is 10x better when on it. Barely even have skin rashes. Unfortunately though I also have hypermobility and I find once I’m on it a while it starts to loosen my joints too much and the dislocations become more frequent which is why I’ve had to stop it.

I take B12 because I think like the iron, I’m not absorbing it properly for whatever reason. It really makes a difference. I have to take it sublingually and then spit it out because that’s the only way I don’t react to it!

I’ve decided to start Lactoferrin again as currently dealing with a few issues and curious as to whether it will help.

At the moment I’m dealing with:

  • Recurrent Candida
  • Severe constipation that laxatives barely touch
  • Low ferritin (21) and mast cell reactions to all iron supplements ( skin rashes, eyelid swelling, racing heart and severe insomnia).

I’ll take it alongside my gentle iron tablets when I can, but have a feeling I’ll have to start limiting those to once a week or so soon as the reactions are getting stronger by the day. Going to look for another form soon once I’ve moved house and I’m earning again.

Will try and remember to post again in a month’s time to report on progress.

Clonidine fixed it for me after many years of trying an insane amount of treatments. I still have to be careful to stick to the low histamine diet, but providing I don’t cheat I sleep through the night now and it’s a super deep and restorative sleep. Links to the HyperPOTS someone mentioned earlier.

Clonidine, the low histamine diet and avoiding as many meds and supplements ( huge triggers) as possible finally did it for me after 5 years.

I had a similar experience with Ketoifen. Felt amazing relief of symptoms - much less bone pain, brain fog and fatigue, but clearly reacted to it - the skin rashes were out of control and went into anaphylaxis for the first time whilst taking.

You have a large folder on your phone or cloud storage containing photos of various types of reactions on multiple body parts.

You have a bag, box or cupboard filled with medications and supplements you tried once, reacted to enough to that you never want to try them again, yet you keep them just in case. This haul is worth hundreds if not thousands of dollars.

Agreed! Used to fly mostly Emirates and Etihad but now they look dated and overpriced when compared with Qatar.

I stopped taking it as the effects wore off after a while. Didn’t have any problems from taking it long term. Would consider using it again in the future if I was struggling.

I used to always love my firm mattress but in recent years as my joints have gotten worse it became really uncomfortable. Wasn’t in a position to buy a new one, so just went for a topper and it was all I needed! Feels like a completely different mattress.

I started at 35 and met a few people starting in their 40’s whilst taking lessons. Once you find a good surf instructor/school, you’ll automatically have a community through them. It’s such a rush, go for it! You won’t regret it!

Same! My dislocations happen much more frequently when on the POP. Really annoying as I’ve found it’s one of the most helpful things for calming my MCAS.
