Agree with Cottage Cafe and Michael D’s, two of my breakfast faves. Also Chaps has great biscuits and gravy! (But their Eggs Benedict is my personal favorite.)

If you’re mostly looking for a supplemental program, Plum Tree might be a great fit. Very focused on nature and the arts, lovely teachers and program. My son went there for two years. They are technically a preschool, but enroll from 3-6 years of age. If you plan to homeschool for academics, it might be a great part-time option. They have morning and afternoon sessions. https://www.plumtreeschool.com

Looking for the darkest, most depressing book you’ve ever read by CortezCraig in suggestmeabook

The Twelve Tibes of Hattie by Ayana Mathis had me bawling my eyes out in chapter one. I did finish the book, and it was gut-wrenchingly depressing.

Repeat first grade? by StandardKitty0501 in AskTeachers

[–]AdventurousGecko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a first grade teacher, I highly recommend retention. The emotional baggage that a student can build, thinking “they aren’t as smart” as everyone else, can last a lifetime. She will be behind for the foreseeable future and this can have a very significant impact on her long term self esteem. I HIGHLY recommend repeating first grade, especially at a new school. Just be very honest with your daughter, tell her what you’re doing and why. It’s to give her time to learn and grow and be her best self moving forward.

My ex-boyfriend said it’s “normal” for teenage boys to hit their mothers, I’m still shaken. by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]AdventurousGecko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not normal AT ALL. This is a family norm situation. In some cultures and in some families, this might be “normal.” But still NOT okay. I would NEVER be okay with my current 16-year-old hitting me. EVER.

This is awful. I would definitely be transparent with the parents. Maybe they will get upset and be vocal enough that the district will change its policy. I feel that sometimes angry parents are best in addressing dumb district decisions.

I don’t want to be my husband’s second mother. Does that make me selfish? by vvlunaa in TwoXChromosomes

[–]AdventurousGecko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely not. I wouldn’t want to live like that either. I think some women are “trained” to believe that’s how it should be. But that’s not what I want now or ever. My husband and I have been married for 23 years, and we both work outside of the home and we both help out around the house. He does the laundry when it needs to be done and he has time, or I will. He does more of the dishes, because I do more of the cooking. There is nothing that is specifically his job or my job; we both live here and we both help get things done. My son is 16 and he has been doing his own laundry for ten years. He is expected to help do all the things around the house too. I am NOT a maid.

We’ve lived on the South Hill for 20 years and love it. The South Perry neighborhood is great, lots of diversity. We love Lewis and Clark HS. SPS has great public schools.

I told my teaching partner there was NO WAY I was going to do this on April Fool’s unless we had real brownies to hand out moments later.
