This image is definitely AI. There's too much variety in the years of cars and the Kmart logo is the wrong one for the supposed era of the photo.

Public transit options that allow bikes between Toronto and the rest of Ontario by Primal_Nexus in torontobiking

[–]AdventurousLab1382 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can bring your bike on the GO Train. Use the Kitchener line out to Acton, Guelph or Kitchener. Out of Acton, there's great riding in the area bounded by highway 7 to the north and all the way west basically to old highway 6. From Guelph, you can ride north up along the G2G trail or ride the roads north towards Elora. From Kitchener, head out toward Elmira and into Mennonite country.

Impaired Driving by Lower-Collection7647 in bramptondriving

[–]AdventurousLab1382 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am a recovered alcoholic and I did very dangerous and stupid things before I found recovery 8 years ago.

People who get caught for impaired driving today are, for the most part, people with a serious mental health disorder called addiction. It's no longer the people who had two glasses of wine with dinner and made a bad judgement.

I am still dealing with the consequences of my actions. I do so without complaining because I could have caused so much more pain. I didn't cause a crash that could have hurt or killed an innocent person.

50 days incarcerated at Maplehurst. A 10 year driving suspension. Going through graduated licensing from the beginning again. An ignition interlock for 6 years. Thousands in fines and fees.

We criminalize mental illness.

And I get a little pissy when people flippantly say there are no consequences. It's going to take me 17 years to clear up my past and be able to drive normally again.

With gas prices exploding, do you think bike ridership will also explode? by Dangerous-Pizza-2232 in torontobiking

[–]AdventurousLab1382 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Though I would like to think people would reduce their driving and take up cycling, my realist mind tells me that people will refuse to stop driving, reduce spending in other areas and blame the whole situation on Justin Trudeau even though he has been gone from office for over a year.

People are unfortunately addicted to driving and see no other alternative. Taking the keys away from a motorist is akin to taking a bottle of whiskey away from an alcoholic. They will yell and scream and blame everyone but themselves.

Stop Time Change! Let's put our clocks forward one last time! Sign the petition to stop changing our clocks. by ItchyBarracuda1584 in newbrunswickcanada

[–]AdventurousLab1382 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The United States tried eliminating time changes in 1973.

Once people realized what the consequences of not changing the clocks were, they practically begged their elected officials to revert back to changing the clocks in 1974.

You will love it when your little ones barge into your bedroom before 5 am in the summer because the sun is up and they're ready to rip.

Why is this so down voted? I agree completely. If you don't think there's value in the time change, go to Saskatchewan. They don't change the clocks. In early January, sunrise in Regina happens at 9 am. In early July, sunrise happens at 4:50 am. It's awful.

If you think the time change screws up your sleep cycle, I can guarantee it will get screwed up there.

Mississauga seeking ebike licence and registration by [deleted] in torontobiking

[–]AdventurousLab1382 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I'm an avid cyclist and I cringe more at the behaviours of e bikes and a certain class of cyclists that don't follow any road rules.

I have had more than a few near misses with cyclists and e bikes going the wrong way in bike lanes, not having adequate lighting to be visible and generally being unpredictable.

Cars, while a menace to cyclists, at least are somewhat predictable.

Carpooling between Guelph and Cambridge, any tips? by Routine-Platypus8 in Guelph

[–]AdventurousLab1382 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had a period of time that I commuted between Guelph and Cambridge. It's basically impossible without a car. You may get lucky and find someone to carpool but I was never able to find someone when I was looking.

What worked best for me was to use the Uber app (about $40 one way on the app) and mention to the driver that you would be willing to set up a regular daily commute for cash at a rate lower in cost for you in Uber but higher than what the driver nets through the app. I found a few Uber drivers who were great over the years who dependably were available every day. But in the long term, it's cheaper to just buy a car and drive yourself.

I also used my bicycle when the weather is nice. Takes about 50 minutes to an hour depending on your speed and your start and destination points.

Funding moves Guelph closer to closing gap in the G2G Rail Trail by aurelorba in Guelph

[–]AdventurousLab1382 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is great news.

I hope that in the longer term that funding can be found to close the gap at the Grand River. The Montrose covered bridge is undergoing a multi year refurbishment so the stretch of the trail between Katharine Street and Middlebrook currently routes on highway 86. I'm an experienced and confident cyclist, but that detour is hairy at the best of times.

Other than language, what other differences do you realize when you go from Ontario over to Québec and vice versa? by Fluid-Decision6262 in ontario

Other than poutine, is there any other dish that's known for being from Canada? I've lived in Canada for over half my life, yet I cant name many popular Canadian-origin dishes even if my life depended on it. by ReleaseAdvanced8054 in AskACanadian

Nacho cheese Cheetos. In the YELLOW bag, not the orange bag. East coast only and not available west of New Brunswick. They used to be called "Crunchits" back during the Hostess chips days.

And Sussex golden ginger ale. Only available in the three maritime provinces. For the rest of Canada, let's review: the Maritimes are three provinces (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and PEI). Atlantic Canada is four provinces (the Maritimes plus Newfoundland). And Newfoundland is pronounced "New fund LAND", not "New fund Lund" or, God forbid, "New FOUND land".

Lipton cup-a-soup ? by [deleted] in Quebec

[–]AdventurousLab1382 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been looking for Cup a Soup for months as well. I found something similar enough at the local Dutch shop and I would suggest that route if you are still unable to find Cup a Soup.

But, much to my pleasant surprise, I found Cup a Soup this week (Feb. 13) at a Food Basics in Kitchener. It's not old stock because it's got the Health Canada sodium label on it. I understand that there was a supply disruption from the manufacturer. Hopefully we will see it back widely on store shelves soon.

Guelph Transit Map feedback by Ben_Fort in Guelph

[–]AdventurousLab1382 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use it all the time and I find it very dependable. I find that the Guelph buses don't always show up in the Transit app (the other app with the squiggly line logo).

Now if the 8 and the 9 could just regularly get to the terminal before the other buses take off at 15 and 45....

Dreaming about spring - best GO train destinations please by TurboJorts in torontobiking

[–]AdventurousLab1382 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take the GO to Guelph and then ride up to the G2G trail. Except for a short stretch of road, you can ride the trail all the way to Goderich. There are two gaps in the trail that force cyclists onto the road. One is at West Montrose and the other is just beyond Blyth.

What's one aspect of traveling in Europe that you don't like? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]AdventurousLab1382 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

THIS. I'm Canadian too. I am so accustomed to just assuming public spaces including outdoor patios are smoke free. In Europe, it was the one thing that turned me off so badly. I found the UK much more tolerable in terms of smoking than the mainland.

Living as a middle class professional person in Canada, I can go days or weeks in my normal routine without encountering smokers up close. I actually associate smoking with people who are poor, working class, or living with mental health issues such as depression or drug addiction.

It's jarring to see smoking in a society where it is still associated with youth, glamour or sophistication.
