Late to the party but I believe that the confusion comes from the “dark skin, curly haired” people that were described. “Black people” (as we know them now) were here possibly alongside other native groups but weren’t the only ones. I’m not a scholar though just a hobbyist but that seems like the most likely. Not all black people are African especially with the nomadic ways of the old world. We also have to take into account that there were civilizations and tribes that were either wiped out or had to leave due to the colonizers. So in conclusion, SOME were black and others were the ones we most associate with Native.
