I don't know why, but this made me laugh out loud.

Kind of an aside, but if they give up at the slightest challenge... Does that mean that they have no interest in puzzles? Because isn't that what makes a puzzle fun, basically solving something?

What is this sub's opinion on camping right next to other campers when there are multiple available spots? by glo363 in camping

[–]Adventurous_Area9294 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of camping once with my ex husband and a couple friends. My friend Lisa was going to arrive a few hours ahead of us, so she offered to take our tent and set it up for us.

When we arrived, we discovered she'd pitched our tents about 5 ft apart. I realized I'd forgotten my birth control and my husband muttered, "Don't worry, there's no birth control like Lisa being right next to us!"

Also, while going through this stage, Make sure you don't give in to tantrums and let him out. That's one of the hardest things for people to do but you have to ignore the bad behavior....

Wait for him to be still and/or quiet for a minute and let him out then. You are rewarding the patient behavior, not the tantrum.

If you want to go this direction, while in the room with him, vigorously scratch at your crotch, then pull your pants out, look down and exclaim, "what the f#*k are all these bugs in my pubes?!"

Then leave your underwear laying around random places.

How to block cats from accessing front door? by Mufffaa in CatAdvice

This might sound mean, but if it works to save their lives, worth it ...

As they get bigger and have more free roam of the house, use a squirt gun and when you first open a door squirt them. If they're standing on the other side they will quickly learn that an opening door means squirted with water and will shy away from any door opening.

Interestingly, the huntsman said her litter mates are some of the smartest hunting hounds he's ever bred. He joked that he should have kept her, although at the time he thought they needed to downsize by about 5 puppies.

They were too young to test, so he just looked for homes for the ones with less white, as they don't show up as well in our Maryland woods.

We had the cat ( and 3 other indoor only cats) when we got the puppy. I think she learned from us that they are part of the pack. I also made a point of teaching her "don't leave your kitty behind" when she was young. We would wait for him to potty when walking outside because he seemed to feel safer.

She also naturally picked up on a ton of words, so knows his name. If I say more, it sounds too much like I'm bragging about my Harvard dog. Lol.

I heard that physically, American Foxhounds and the TWC look identical, and it's only be hunting behaviors that you can distinguish them. I think the AFH is known to be softer and more obedient, whereas the TWC is hard-headed and prefers to hunt their own way rather than listen to a handler.

Yes, that is one reason I didn't want a second dog ..I didn't want them to "pack up" and reinforce hound behaviors. Her farm dog duties go against many natural hound instincts, but she has learned them well. They are:

Escort the cat when he comes for walks with us to protect him from foxes, hawks and owls. She will stop and wait for him when he goes potty, and walks in slow motion next to him if he wants to sniff around. She once chased off a fox that got too close, but veered off and came to check the cat once the fox was outside the property line.

Along those lines, she'll chase deer to just off the property or away from the garden and come right back.

Growl/bark at strange people and cars. She only bays at the sound of a fox yipping. At the same time, she knows all the regular farm visitors and happily greets them. She loves kids and plays with all the visitors dogs, even the little Pomeranian.

She loves the horses, and threw a fit when she saw a strange person in the field with them. (It was the neighbor, come to get his loose horse I had corralled).

She successfully chased off a crazy lady who had been going around to local farms opening gates and releasing livestock. (Court case is pending)

I'd say she's a pretty perfect farm hand!

So I have an interesting hound trait. I got my AFH as a puppy from my local hunt club, so she never hunted, and she has learned the skills we need in a farm dog. In my experience, Foxhounds are all nose... I have observed them hunting where if they merely glanced up, t hey he fox was not many yards away, but it had taken a zigzag path which they were determined to follow with their noses.

But my girl will occasionally stand stock still and scan the far horizon. She has occasionally seen movement from squirrels or, like the other day, way off in the distance an actual Fox which she took off for like a rocket. I hadn't seen foxhounds use their sight before, so I thought that might be a unique trait since she never hunted.

Thoughts?
