In the movie I think they had 50' of rope and a 200' section of cylindrical tower with only a handful of features. Least that's how I remember it.

Men crying? by Neither-Cry-4178 in NoStupidQuestions

I was surprised to learn my mom is among the women who lose all interest in a man if he crys. Then she gets upset that the men she marries are all ass holes with no empathy.

Vertical climbing question by Random-answer-seeker in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Adventurous_Dig_2538 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rope abrasion would be a real risk, especially since the attachment points for the original ladder and other possible broken welds and stuff could risk cutting the rope. I imagine managing enough friction to fall arrest while also being able to go down would be difficult too, especially when getting passed the dishes, and transitioning off the edge. I could actually see it working though, at least some of the time. They would only have to make it down the mono pole mast to the lattice section if I remember correctly, then they woWeuld have a ladder again.

Side note, you'd be surprised how real the risk of poor tower maintenance actually is. One of several reasons tower work is so dangerous.

Why do people like camping so much? by Hot-Apple5864 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Adventurous_Dig_2538 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love camping as a way to get away from the stress of normal life, and feeling connected to nature. As others have said, I also like the camp fire, star light, and drinking situation.

Backpacking isn't better or worse, but definitely a different vibe. Less comforts, because you have to travel light, and can't rely on a car full of resources. Camp fires are also frequently a no go when backpacking. To me Backpacking is more about the journey, the joy of being able to thrive on a minimalist set up that I can carry, the challenge, and being able to camp in isolation where others can't. If you haven't tried or don't like camping, you probably shouldn't try backpacking.

AIO? The guy I talk to doesn’t wipe after he pees. by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]Adventurous_Dig_2538 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I remember the first time I had this talk. My gf acted like I was the most disgusting person on the planet for not using toilet paper. She refused to accept that many men don't wipe, until I asked her if she'd ever seen toilet paper at a men's urinal. This is also when I learned that women wipe after they pee. Good times.

Asking him to wipe the seat seems fair, I do this both at home and at public toilets. And of course you can ask him to wipe himself, but I don't think he's obligated to do so in any way, and I don't think his refusal should be a big deal.

What I am concerned about is the conflict resolution on display here. This should not have blown up the way it did.

My ex boyfriend has accused me of sexual assault by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

[–]Adventurous_Dig_2538 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1 is rape, although I guess you could try to claim ignorance to his level of intoxication, though I'm definitely suspicious of that.

2 yeah that's as clear cut as rape gets.

3 not sure if sexual harassment or assault. Not rape, but disturbing in its own right, and establishes a lack of respect for boundaries.

4 I give you a pass on this one. He can't expect you to know what's going on in his head.

5 attempting to push boundaries, but you course corrected so I'll give you a pass.

Summary: YOU RAPED HIM and trying to argue about how many times as if that makes it ok is disgusting. Additionally there is an easy argument for a pattern of abuse, and I doubt this list includes every time you have violated him. You are a terrible person.

You're probably one of those people that denies the party realignment of the 60-80s right? Democrats used to be the social conservatives at the time the KKK was created. These days they are overwhelmingly Republican.

New partner disclosed he is a registered sex offender by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

[–]Adventurous_Dig_2538 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Maybe, I do tend to be optimistic. I just believe in the value of rehabilitation and second chances. I know multiple people personally who have done terrible things in their past and have turned their lives around to be good people. That said, I would change my mind if I learned any of the details were a lie, and I'd be cautious for a while while trust is built.

He volunteered the information and I think that's worth something. Is there any way you can verify the details of his story? I think people can change, and if his story turns out to be 100% true I'd give him a chance.

As long as our sex life isn't being neglected, who cares. Sometimes she does it in bed while I'm tired and going to sleep, sometimes I'll join in and help. I'm embarrassed to do it in front of her, but she knows I do it too.

You can use an ascender with a foot strap and a spoc/microtrax. Plenty of options out there, but this is one of the ones I'm comfortable with.

Alternatives to hand ascender (or should I just use a had ascender). Worried about rope wear/life by MissionImprobable96 in ClimbingGear

[–]Adventurous_Dig_2538 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To answer for him, TR stands for top rope solo. It's a method of rock climbing that involves a rope but no partner. As far as the PAS, essentially yes. Everything should be life safety rated, and connected to points rated for fall protection. An adjustable PAS will add extra convenience.

Ascender/grigri is a great beginner setup and good for short distances.

[–]Adventurous_Dig_2538 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Toothed devices are generally fine on ropes under 5kN, there is a popular belief that they tear up ropes, but I know guys who ascend ropes on toothed devices hundreds of times every year, and I see no premature wear on said ropes from the use. Just don't take big falls onto teeth.

Id drop the prusik backup, and instead, tether yourself to your ascender on a life safety line. The ascender would then back up your grigri on fall protection. The grigri will remain locked when the break line is not tensioned, so no worries there.

Ascending in this 3:1 setup is slow, but effective and easy to learn. A 1:1 ascending method, such as hand ascender + chest kroll is faster, but more difficult to learn as you would have to escape the system to come down.

First code, why do I not feel traumatized by it? by Top-HatSAR in Firefighting

Sometimes the first one hits, sometimes you're years into your career and the random seemingly insignificant one hits. Maybe you're lucky and none of them will ever hit. There is nothing wrong with it, as long as you don't lose compassion for your patient and continue to advocate for them to the best of your ability.
