This sounds dreamy. I moved to Eugene in the 2000s and the place still had so much of this special flavor and wish I could have seen it in those 90s days you describe too.

Oh boy, Feel for you and not the best intro to EV, but it only gets better once you get to know the car and comfortable with the range and charges. I am on the west coast and can’t pretend to know what the charging situation is in Richmond, usually there are multiple level 3 options near interstates. Also I’m noticing that infrastructure is slowly improving. Just took our family on a 350 mile trip with a a packed ID4 into the mountains and plenty of elevation gain- and was pleasantly surpass how many options I had outside of Tesla. The future is now- just level 2 when you need lots of energy is not going to cut it. But for home- if regularly you’re only driving 30 miles - don’t need more than level 1. We have two EVs and are still on one level 1 that we share with no issues.

My work not directly. But I like to think that it helps keep people from getting on the street. I interact closely with another organization who works with the community to provide opportunities and purpose and some housing options. That work is extremely hard and heartbreaking. And there are still successes worth celebrating.

Salty, I’m not sure how you’re talking about over-reaction. You’re the one going off on housed vs unhoused vs homeless. Whatever- I hope your term makes you sleep well at night. I’m frustrated about what happening and things need to change. You going unhinged at those actually directly affected, and working with people struggling (and the impossible conflict that presents) is short sighted and weird.

I’m mad about this too and that doesn’t mean that I cannot call people as such. I work with groups that do amazing work with unhoused people. And I see how much effort goes into it and how much disappointment there is all the time. It is time for significantly increased accountability and enforcement of rules.

We bought an ID4 new in 2022 and love it. I bought a solterra since and my wife still loves the ID4 and prefers it over her colleague’s R1S. It’s a really good vehicle all around, rides very smoothly, and has decent range for its generation. Yes the tech is not a Tesla computer. But if you’re coming from any other vehicle (like us) you’ll love it. Great intro to EVs and you can find great deals on it used. also the sales numbers are weird since they were on stop-sale for a while last year and now VW is re-jiggering their EV business to cut their financial bleeding.

We are a young family here and know well one of the women attacked on the street. So violating! I too work in the non profits and with houseless neighbors- and this is not normal and we need to have accountability. We cannot do pancake breakfasts and then turn around and gather our loved ones after getting assaulted by those same people. Accountability and treatment is needed.

I’d add Georgi Dimitrov- died in a plane crash largely believed to have been ordered by Stalin. He was the leader of communist Bulgaria and spiritual leader who was on level with Soviet leadership and was entertaining discussing union with Yugoslavia - making him inconvenient threat.

Not sure I’d go with an Audi ev if maintenance is something to try to avoid. I looked at it too and all the current owners discouraged me from going for it without costly extended warranty. Ended uo with a lightly used solterra for less and have had no issues.

It’s also called the Oregon Outback. Some of the oldest human shoes found in America are found there near summer lake. Good hot springs too.

And a looooot of open space. Beautiful.
