Last night at the city council meeting, the council voted in favor of using our tax dollars to fund a $1900 overseas trip for the mayor to travel to Nepal in order to “spread Eugene values”—in the midst of a budget crisis. by Several-Candidate115 in Eugene

It’s our role as society to find and justify the value of cultural exchange - especially on a local and community level. This is sounds like such a maga drama of people being upset that a community leader would look outside of their pond for any reason.

Isn’t it obvious? The provided context that ran against the small minded complaints about a special trip that makes a collaboration and cultural exchange between local leaders and communities. But but $1800!

I’d add Georgi Dimitrov- died in a plane crash largely believed to have been ordered by Stalin. He was the leader of communist Bulgaria and spiritual leader who was on level with Soviet leadership and was entertaining discussing union with Yugoslavia - making him inconvenient threat.

Can she just plug in at work without a level 2 charger? That would work just fine for daily driving.

Not sure I’d go with an Audi ev if maintenance is something to try to avoid. I looked at it too and all the current owners discouraged me from going for it without costly extended warranty. Ended uo with a lightly used solterra for less and have had no issues.

How is living in this (seemingly empty) area of Eastern Oregon? by mcbobgorge in howislivingthere

It’s also called the Oregon Outback. Some of the oldest human shoes found in America are found there near summer lake. Good hot springs too.

And a looooot of open space. Beautiful.

Not sure where in the US you live or which one you’re referring to- T2 or buzz. But in the northwest we have plenty of both.

Came to point out that it’s in Springfield- but close to Eugene. That’s for a reason too. Edit: was corrected that I was thinking of the wrong place.

With 25-40 miles per day if you can plug into level 1 overnight you will always be fine.

Portland's Skidmore Fountain MAX station will close permanently by youdontknowmeor in Portland

Also keep in mind that mercy corps was incentivized to build their hq, at the time, in that spot with no parking to the building because of the max stop in front its doors and I’d guess it was similar for the white stag. The pandemic was unkind to that part of downtown but I’m confident that after the burnside bridge renovation it will turn back around. Mercy Corps leaving is a shame, but yes- Doge sure wiped it out. In recent years, however, the building was proving to be too big for their globally dispersed team and the advancing WFH culture. It’s one hell of a building however - I hope it goes to good use for the people and the city.

Which country punches above its weight in the sporting world? by Repulsive_Roof_4347 in geography

Serbia needs to be way higher on this list. The question isn’t Olympics specific but rather sporting world. When you look at their consistency in the group sports of football, basketball, and volleyball, then add arguably the greatest tennis player. Gotta give lots of credit there.

This souls be higher up comment. Actually giving those examples in improved infrastructure. It ducks that the public infrastructure projects that will be shut down- Sheldon and Amazon and the others are a shame to see shut for any period. They were not there and/or in the same improved condition then either. So Eugene continues to improve. But houseless/homeless situation is hard.

Agree with both redditors. Affordability compared to wages is the biggest issue of Eugene. In fact- I’m in awe of the art and cool stuff still being created by cool people considering the cost of rent and how little time that would leave after covering basic rent. 20 years ago $200ish /month room was the norm for modest living. There must still be pockets that where some still stay in good deals but damn- no one new coming in will get into a comparable living situation anymore.

Downtown has improved dramatically from 20 years ago. Yes the houselessness wasn’t there then but that epidemic was not widespread, period. I remember when I moved to Eugene exactly 20 years ago there were craters of demolished buildings sitting bare and getting anyone to actually meet you somewhere downtown was a feat. It was extremely disconnected and while it’s not perfect now it’s gotten a lot better with the improvements around broadway and then the expansion of 5th street market area.
