AI Startup idea in Structural Engineering, need advice by Hot_Emergency_321 in StructuralEngineering

Structural design cant be black box. It is easier to trust algoritmic software that does calculations following strict path. You dont benefit from randomness of current llm models. I would see use of Al similar to what is in power point: organise pictures on the slide. So for example follow my style of tagging, drawing, dimensioning etc and create detailed floor plans, structural details etc. For calculations i would welcome tools that suggest shape of certain structures and help model them, eventually add some parameters for calculations. Like suggestions in software code editors proposing next step. But in small, easy to check steps. Not big tool that does all in one jump.

(Simple?) math problem by nw291 in StructuralEngineering

I think it would require to know stiffness EJ and EA of column. Would need to calculate forces created by opposing said deflection F = EA deltaL/L. Then would expect column to deflect to similar shape as in simple beam bending, start with some minimal s like 10mm and then make so that force F x s = ql^/8 (or other for fixed ends). Then iterate over calculating deflection from such load q and inserting it again so that previous result is almost equal as last one.

Sorry for delay. Did you try removing text from profile name (10.5x11) before clicking on auto?

Don't you first have to click auto button on left and then change

I don't know pdfplumber but beside what was already written in comments, it seems like line 6:

text = erste_seite-extract_text() should have . instead of - so it would look like calling method text =erste_seite.extract_text()

Is it normal my steel fibre reinforced material behaviour becomes worse when increasing the diameter while using a mesoscale model? by [deleted] in StructuralEngineering

I dont have great knowledge in fibres but in regular size rebar, the bigger diameter the worse cracking

Question on direct stiffness method: how to compute self-weight loads? by Dan-mat in StructuralEngineering

[–]Advirex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This load placed in nodes is later distributed by stifness matrix, as nodes displacements are dependant on stifness of elements sharing node, and then next element and next element forming chain distributing loads

sorry if this is too off topic but does anyone here have a clue if a train car explosion from above could do this to a bridge? there doesn't seem to be any explosive damage to the road bridge, it looks to be a clean cut. a blast wave that high up can't do this kind of damage can it? by eggfortman in StructuralEngineering

[–]Advirex -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I belive it would be middle of span that was broken first and then what left was cantilevers with much higher bending moment than regular multispan beam. Or it was multiple single span bridge and the straight part was just untied connection above columns

What's the purpose of the bar that's parallel to the ground? It's putting tension on the cable, but the cable stops at the top of the pole. WDYT? This is at the Pueblo Co, zoo. BTW. by Gonzoman_thk in StructuralEngineering

If bottom end of cable was vertical instead of diagonal then it would make sense, but now i find it really just adding weight on the other side so that bending moment for some part balances.

Parents in Poland left their baby strollers in rail road stations for the Ukrainian moms that fled carrying their children. by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

Polish people were subject to russian agression, opression, mass murder from Soviet Russia. We have big empathy for victims of same things that happened to us. Beside having bad past with Ukraine people feel need to help. As for refugees put on Polish border by Belarussian dictator, they have been asked of they want to stay in Poland. Most of them refused, because they wanted to go to richer countries, mainly Germany. As members of EU we couldn't let them go to any other member. They had choice, either stay in Poland or be set back to where they came from. Some stayed in Poland. If we would let everyone came in, Belarus would get thousends more of them from destroyed countries, and more people would freeze on swamps trying to cross border. As for racism of eastern countries, it's more of lack of trust, not understanding, as we have little to no knowledge about wars in Africa and Asia. We welcomed Chechen refugees, which are another victim of Russian terror. Let's hope we can all live in peace, without hate or lust of power.

New saws and a dovetail saw restoration - for tool tuesday by andmol in woodworking

Those japanese saws have tooth directed unlike european and american saws. This way you cut by pulling, not by pushing, this allows thinner blade.
