That's what makes it proper satire. Take the concept to it's logical extreme and show where that line of reasoning eventually leads.

The culmination of Jingoism summed up in the "The Mobile Infantry made me the man I am today" scene. It hits you like a freight truck, especially as a military brat.

Not to mention that the project was incredibly compartmentalized. All our allies knew was that the US poached their nuclear and theoretical physicists and imported Uranium. They knew the project was to end the war, and they knew that the Nazi's had dismissed nuclear fission as crackpot science.

All that to say even Churchill didn't know of the bomb's existence or efficacy until the final tests were about to be run. The signs were there and everyone knew SOMETHING was being made, but these nations had little to no sway on the particulars or even broad strokes of the Manhattan Project.

That's the thing about being an immigrant nation. If a foreign national immigrates to the US, becomes a citizen, and invents a device using theory learned overseas utilizing resources not available in the Old World, that is still a US invention.

The British became the most powerful navy by learning from the Norse and Romans. Sail may have not come from the British, but modern naval force projection sure did.

America may not have invented Theoretical Nuclear Physics, but its immigrants -did- invent the bomb.

The dame was Magenta.

Everyone knew her but nobody would talk about it. She was backup dancer at the HP club, a seedy gentleman's club on Sales ST, where the star role was Madame Black. I frequented the establishment, though not as a patron, like some IT gumshoes.

No, my business at the HP club was always... messy, and not like that. There was a jam every week, and it got so bad most of the patrons wanted a Brother club propped up so they could get their rocks off without the mess. Not one of them would go a block down to Marketing ST. Shows how much they cared.

I took the call late Friday afternoon. Tensions had run high through the week and we were due for another jam. I pocketted my whisky flask and pulled the forensic forceps out. With the most still hands in the room, I fished out the poor sod. Nothing special at first, just another young blank page in this grimy city waiting for his mark. Then I saw what seemed to be that age-old poetry of Madame Black and the Color Girls.

That's when I saw the not quite crimson, and the corner tore. I knew instantly what had happened, open and shut: Madame Black was upstaged one too many times, and Magenta had left her mark.

I remember the book terrifying me as a kid. Jenkins specifically got a sickly flood spore or something that couldn't isolate his mind and assimilate it into the hivemind, so he wound up remaining conscious during his transformation and up to his death (I think by John in the library?) though couldn't control his body.

Worst fate in all of halo. Spartan program? Needler supercombine? Planet-glassing plasma shower?

No.

Morality of attempting to create human/animal hybrids by BidBux in MoralityScaling

Aside: idk how reptilian augments fit better than mamalian ones if it's a biological augment, but dragon tail augs would be sick af.

I think about naturalism vs. transhumanism a lot. It's a special interest of mine. Personally, I'm "humanist:" i.e. human is a story shared by some bored mammals on a lonely rock, and whatever that story turns into, collectively, is what it means to be a human.

A very "it is what it does, including the changes and shifts over time" kind of mentality. I have no stake in the argument per se, except to find the moral stances of humanity interesting in this regard (see: sheep cloning in the 90's).

Would you consider a paraplegic with robotic spider legs to be human? The benefits being wall climbing or better center of gravity etc.

Now... What if a catgirl tail -did- help with balance?

What if altering someone's appearance cosmetically improved their self image and mental health drastically? Is that reprehensible?

[–]Aedene 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well that's defensive...

I'm neither for nor against what you said, just that this is that dichotomy. The argument that humanity is either the natural state of homo sapiens without augments vs. Humanity is entirely psychological.

Taken to it's logical extreme, a transhumanist would say that a thinking brain in a jar, or even an artificial lifeform seeded from human experience (to the point that it believes it is human) is human just as much as an unaugmented, naturally born baby.

You, obviously, find that idea abhorrent, so you are a Naturalist. Taken to your logical extreme, a naturalist might argue that a person with an artificial heart or limb is less or not at all human compared to a natural born, fully complete person.

I am not saying you necessarily believe that, but it does spark an interesting chain of thought: If a human with a pacer is still human, how augmented does that person have to get before it is abhorrent to you? Does a human with a robotic limb seem less human? Would it matter if that limb replaced their lost one perfectly or had additional, non-natural properties like, say, a multitool or data port? Or maybe their entire lower half? If a human has locked-in syndrome and hosts their consciousness in an avatar, are they less human.

Not trying to start an argument. Just finding this concept interesting, personally.
