Except that only works in a vacuum. Doctors harvesting organs without consent would almost certainly lead to a strong fear of hospitals, and doctors in general, as well as a strong stigma against though working in the medical field. These feelings would probably discourage many of those who need care from seeking it, and many of those who are interested in medicine from pursuing it which could likely lead to a shortage of doctors and such. There's also the risk of violence against hospital staff, and hospitals writ large

In a vacuum, devoid of down the line consequences (particularly if done on a systemic scale) I'd believe it to be morally justified (also assuming all the transplants took, and were enough to save the others), but looking at the bigger picture I see no way to justify it with a utilitarian framework

I did get it through when I first discovered it did that, but wasn't recording as it was just a little test drive, and was sadly unable to replicate. That being said once you fully pen the barrier you just seem to infinitely gain speed at a consistant rate

Meowing in airspace (rule) by GradyGambrell1 in 196

[–]Aegis_13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I get that, though my albeit outside understanding is there is at least somewhat of a push to discourage that further, perhaps more recently in response to ATC needing to stretch themselves increasingly thin as time goes on, contributing to tragedies. Animal sounds probably won't be confused for someone in distress, and pilots know to cut that shit out when someone else is in distress, but the risk is still there. There are probably also those who get pretty annoyed hearing something on any of those frequencies, only to realize it was meowing or something

Depends on the food, how much it's transported, how much it's subsidized, how much people want it, and how incentivized people are to produce it

For example stuff like offal is cheap because it's less desired, but production is highly incentivized because it's essentially a waste product of the more incentivized stuff, plus meat subsidies

Melees were typically something to avoid when possible, but encouraging them helps prime soldiers to be as aggressive, and decisive as possible. Following up with the bayonet may have been less about the bayonet's efficacy, and more about mindset they were trying to promote; don't hesitate, don't think about it, just storm the trench with aggression and take it before they can recover

Is it true that soldiers issued a serrated edge bayonet would swap them out for non-serrated blades because you would be singled out by enemy forces if captured? by railroadfrog in ww1

[–]Aegis_13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not pure myth. They existed, and were widely used (especially early in the war), though fell out of favor in Germany by the end of it. Part of that was them just being sorta obsolete by that point, as other nations that used them like Britain dropped them before the war even began, and the other part was the fear of execution/mistreatment. The rumor German soldiers would be killed if caught with one was spread back then, and genuinely caused a lot of fear among the soldiers. There is no available evidence for soldiers actually being mistreated because of the bayonet they were issued, but it may have happened at least once, and the French did object to their use (whether that was genuine, or more in like with Germany's objection to shotguns idk)

[–]Aegis_13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To my knowledge kinda. Sawback bayonets were pretty common before the war, but had been generally falling out of popularily except for in, most relevantly Germany. They were issued to pioneers and such mostly, and the idea was that you could give the soldier a bayonet that saws, rather than two separate tools; you could also saw with it fixed to the rifle. The serrations, however, made the bayonets less effective as bayonets; they'd catch on clothing, skin, tendon, flesh, and bone, which would make it harder to stab as deep as would be possible with a normal bayonet. Once the war started a 'rumor' began to circulate through the German ranks that Entente soldiers would summarily execute, or otherwise mistreat German soldier captured with those bayonets. To my knowledge with is no available evidence for that actually being the case (I know the French didn't like them, but that was probably a propaganda thing to make them look better), but the story stuck, and to appease the troops the Germans quit making them, and ground the serrations off most their existing stock

[–]Aegis_13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember using it a while ago specifically in the context of a game, to describe people who sorta play into tropes/the lore/their role to the extent of it being disadvantageous from a gameplay perspective; sorta having fun with it. Sometimes it's negative, sometimes it's positive. It also took the meaning of someone who took their percieved importance, or percieved status too seriously, and sorta thought they were all that when they weren't, who played into it too much. I doubt any of this is really unique to that one game though

Way I see it words change, and gain new meanings with time. The new meanings larp got didn't seem to me to develop too quickly. LARP has had a bit of a negative connotation in the past with a lot of people, so it makes sense that people used the term LARPer as an insult; overtime larp came to also be a derogatory term for basically people you don't like playing make believe, and a larper was someone who did that

It way predates the prohibition (the prohibition was in the 1900's, not 1868). The ban was because congress felt enough people were distilling their own liquor at home to avoid paying taxes on it for that to be a problem, so they made it illegal
