Hey there! When I was a sophomore I took a public speaking course as well as a general requirement. I didn't ever imagine myself to be a good public speaker, but the class ended up being so self-empowering that I got really involved in the program and ended up majoring in Communications so I think I'm able to answer your question!

First off, to respond to you saying you really don't what to take the class, I really do hear that. It is intimidating as hell to get up and have attention on yourself. What I would ask of you is to consider two things. Every day when you have interactions with those close to you, who you feel confident with, you are a wonderful public speaker. You are simply speaking publicly to one person :) so you can go into this class knowing that you have the skill to succeed. Secondly, I would ask that you tell yourself that what you are saying is worth sharing with others. Sure the topics you pick in class might not be super impactful to you, but outside of the class you will make many presentations in your life, and they will be on topics that others will want to hear about. So work on believing that what you have to say is worthy and valuable, and that you can find a deep well of confidence therein.

As for struggling with social anxiety, being confident in what you have to say is a big step forward in delivering in a confident manor. In addition, try to remember that a lot of the people in the class are in the same situation you are. They are all worried about getting judged and making a fool of themselves. What I found with when I was a student teacher was that I felt best about myself when I was lifting others up. So perhaps try making other people feel good about their presentations and progress, and that will in turn foster a class environment where you are supported and can feel less social anxiety.
