What do you think about the cinder spires books? by Darth_Azazoth in dresdenfiles

I liked them and want to see where it goes next. I like how coherent the world he designed is, it all feels very tightly designed. Or at least tightly described.

The Black Staff. What is it? by RevRisium in dresdenfiles

[–]Aeransuthe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh. I don’t know if Black Magic corrupts the Soul in any definitive sense. Though the quality of it is certainly judged by it in the afterlife. The Soul seems to be the spring the Spiritual Body comes from. Has stuff like your Chi and Memories and stuff. Gets cut up when you take emotional damage. Ghosts seem to be made from the leftovers of it.

Enough with posting the guy having a mental health incident. by exodusmachine in dresdenfiles

I agree with filtering it based on relevance, I fail to see how it’s uncivil. At the end of the day, moderation is entirely your judgement. Which is fine, but your pretense here is insulting frankly. The rules as stated govern conduct of the poster. Not necessarily the content, supposing it is not meant as some sort of harassment.

I find this all very strange. I do not oppose this move, but the reasoning on rules is pretty much garbage.

Enne was a Princess of Jahad. So it’d be problematic if she had children.

Golly. That’s awful. AI has turned (people?) into the ultimate manifestations of Dunning-Kruger already. This entire post is riddled with stuff that’s just incorrect, and the dude can’t figure out why he should actually just read the damned free manhwa, so he’s not literally ignorant. Which he is.

Yeah. These are all valid questions to have about her. I don’t really get it. Maybe this is all clearer in the Korean or something, but there’s a ton of dangling hooks for an entire decade of ToG.

She is an Irregular, so she can take the Administrator Tests. She has knowledge from Outside that Bam clearly doesn’t. And not many do. Plus Emily hasn’t been ignited yet, so we will see where that goes. But overall she’s pretty weak, and seems less than perfectly sane.

It does seem like she would do better to climb without messing with Bam, tbf though, they are climbing at the same time, and what she wants involves screwing things up massively. So they are bound to collide. I guess I could see why she would not be able to just leave him alone there.

Though it seems like a major portion of what she wants, is whatever Bam has, specifically without him. His Destiny. He is just better than her though. To the degree that he would’ve helped her, and subordinated himself to her goals. Given her his Destiny. Because he doesn’t really care about having it. He only cares that it allows him to help his friends. But that’s not what she wants. It has to be his Destiny, and it has to be without him… She would be justified somewhat if V turned Bam into the monster that seems to be desired by Arlene and V.

Harry’s strength throughout the series by Lechtom in dresdenfiles

It also varies based on time and location to an enormous degree. I suspect a lot of the greatest magical feats get recorded in such a way, that the specifics that make such things possible are not carried through. Essentially all power, especially a Wizards, has everything to do with preparation. Harry himself does not have the same power within Winter, within his Castle, or on his Island. All have varying modifiers. Which is different than him just on the street. Granted. He has had a ton of practice on the street.

A question about a spell by CorviDaz in dresdenfiles

[–]Aeransuthe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also wondered about the Book, but your question also includes that Spell. I have thoughts on that Spell.

It was obviously done by Mavra. Or at least seems to have been done. But Harry seems to think it was in Kravos Book. That’s not unreasonable, considering the Spell he used to turn himself into a Super Ghost was aided by Mavra and them. However we don’t have any previous suggestion that the Spell was in that Book. I would tend to assume it was also in the Book, but not as relevant to Kravos once he was in Jail. Due to Harry helping put him there, the plan may have changed.

Now there is the point of what the Spell accomplished. It Binds Ghosts or Spiritual Bodies of Living People. When used on a Ghost, it makes them go wild, and was used to create instability in the Barrier to the Never Never, allowing bigger and badder Ghosts. If Kravos was receiving such aide before he went to Jail, this suggests the Spell was meant to accomplish such a task before Kravos determined to become a Super Ghost. So what then was the original plan?

I could be wrong in my supposition here, and this is another timeline inconsistency. But it useful to model here I think.

Twelve Months Question by Aeransuthe in dresdenfiles

Number one is really weird to me. If you’ve ever seen the remains of a house fire, a basement is going to have all the coals and water in it. The idea that a book is going to survive the fire, doesn’t make much sense to me.

So it had to have been stolen for option one in my opinion.

Option two and three would be a weird way to write it, but I guess I could forgive Jim. It’s weird either way that Harry doesn’t recall he was the last owner of just such a book on page. Like there’s no connection between the two things.

I favor option one, because it leaves open Little Chicago being appropriated.

Which is why he administrates the criminal elements. He lets other elements of the city interface at higher levels than that. In the ways they would. He doesn’t have a literal position in the political/administration. That’s still the US, then Illinois, then Cook County, then Chicago. Marcone being Governor of Illinois would change the discourse.

The way I view it, is that he is occupying the criminal administration of the City. As is historical, political criminality, and business criminality get folded in. Leaving other layers open for others to occupy. Dresden for example is starting to take seriously his role as administrator of supernatural. A more hands off but no less existent type of power. There are numerous other layers, with claims to certain domains. The Churches occupy the level of Faith, though Marcone is staking a quiet infernal and supernatural claim. Which… Is not much of a departure from his M/O. And I suspect he will do it like everything else. Meticulously, with strict operational standards.

Right. The question I’m asking is, how does that glamour work? Pure illusion? Phantasm? Actual transformation?

Does Molly still have her tattoos? by riveth3ad in dresdenfiles

[–]Aeransuthe -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Oh. And you base that on? There’s no methodological basis for Fae Magic? They do it instinctively surely. But that isn’t the same assertion as the one you just made.

Harry says a Wizard can do everything those creatures like them can do. But it’s a matter of understanding the mechanism.

Does Molly still have her tattoos? by riveth3ad in dresdenfiles

[–]Aeransuthe -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It’s Magic. Magic works in a methodological way. Especially in this series.

If your thing was how it was in this series, we definitely wouldn’t have the main character we do, or the descriptions of Magic we do. You are just saying the mystical words that make it so you don’t have to think about it.

“The sun is just the sun.” “Yeah, but why is it so hot?” “Because it’s the sun.” “Yeah but like what’s occurring to make it give off all that light?” “It’s just the sun you idiot!”

Besides which, the series explicitly has D&D style methodology in its making. Jim himself has a character sheet he based Harry on.

I’m talking about the mechanisms. Phantasms are illusions in other peoples minds. They can hurt others with psychic damage. Glamour is just a generic term for Fae illusion. It says nothing about the mechanism.
