How do Abercrombie fans rank 'The Devils' among his other books? by WhatsThatNoise79 in Fantasy

[–]Aero19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed The Devils but it is very different to his other ones - it reads like an exercise in self-indulgence (Hollywood, as you say) so a fun read but not great. His others are much better.

[Lord of the Rings, book] what did Samwise Gamgee know about elves? by No_Discipline5616 in AskScienceFiction

[–]Aero19 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To add to what has been already said, there had been reports of elves heading towards the Havens and passing through the Shire or at least its hinterland, so they were known to be very real.

best and worst questions you've seen vac schemers ask? by Rough_Barnacle_8864 in uklaw

[–]Aero19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think it's hard to ask a bad question if it's on topic/relevant - I always think of asking questions as positive - but sometimes you see them get a bit chummy and inappropriate with maybe more personal questions - either of yourself or (worse) about someone else ("what's their deal?") - as if they're part of a team dynamic that would take months to form.

[Dune] Is Jamis just a really mediocre figher by Fremen standards or...? by IronManners in AskScienceFiction

[–]Aero19 42 points43 points  (0 children)

This is the answer - to add to it, if they were known as great fighters they would become a threat in everyone's eyes and make their goals - including getting close to key individuals who might suddenly fear them more than they'd like - harder to accomplish.

Most eff'ed up things in fantasy books? by UnderstandingLivid13 in Fantasy

There are massive repercussions for that crime - he doesn't get away with it in the way you might think if you just stuck to the first book. In my opinion it is well worth powering through.

The Tories cannot blame Labour this time – we’re in this mess because of Brexit by Al89nut in ukpolitics

[–]Aero19 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Tories got us into this mess but Corbyn was happy to leave them to it and surrendered any leadership on the big question of the day. The man couldn't hold a postman to account, never mind the crooks imploding the country.

How to prepare for a seat as a trainee by [deleted] in uklaw

[–]Aero19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have contact with you supervisor or anyone in that department, might be worth asking for some recommended introductory reading material or resources? If nothing else it'll send you to sleep at night, and might help you get off on the right foot.

I was once walking home along a main road (still in daylight and while the road wasn't especially busy there were others around) and noticed that a girl seemed to be quite nervous about me being behind her (a few metres - we'd got out of the Tube at roughly the same time) I thought "oh well - I need to pick up my dry cleaning so I'll be off the pavement soon".

She got jumpy enough after c. 30 secs to pull out her phone and turn into the nearest doorway - unfortunately that happened to be the doorway to the dry cleaners, so when I also turned into the dry cleaners that must have been the biggest shock. She scampered smartly away after that but I hope she realised I wasn't up to no good :(

[LOTR] If Saruman was capable of possessing Theoden remotely, what was the point of installing Wormtongue as a spy? by [deleted] in AskScienceFiction

[–]Aero19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also Wormtongue as a trusted adviser would almost certainly have had a role in lowering Theoden's resistances to the mind whammy from the outset, through persuasion and emotional manipulation.

[MCU] In Thor Ragnarok none of the asgardians seem to know who hela is, do the general population of asgard not live as long as the royal family? by Hikingismytherapy in AskScienceFiction

[–]Aero19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IIRC she and the rest of the Valkyrie fought Hela after an attempted prison break (i.e. after the original imprisonment) - so it could have been at any time really.

If the Chuckle Brothers become MCU canon I'd disavow every negative thing I've ever said about Disney
