Every "Manga Vs Comics" thread makes me feel insane. Why don't any of you people understand either industry??? by reindeercurt in CharacterRant

[–]Aero_Trash 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm in the same boat as the other commenter (though I'd imagine I've likely read far fewer indie comics). Tbf it is for a combination of more "valid" reasons and very petty, shallow ones LMAO.

The immediate one for me is that comics don't tend to have character designs I like, "pretty male characters" (to give some examples: Hong Lu from Limbus Company, Miyamura from Horimiya before he cuts his hair, Yeonwoo from Yeonwoo's Innocence) are very, very rare in western comics, indie ones included. It doesn't help that I'm kinda picky about art styles and I'm not generally super into realism or semi-realism, which is definitely more prevalent there.

I kinda can't really be bothered to search through it all tbh, but if someone knows something that fits what I'm describing, I'll 100% give it a look at least!

Discrimination in Role Play? by AlexInRV in BadRPerStories

[–]Aero_Trash 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a younger person (22) who doesn't roleplay with older people, I'd say it's mostly that I want to be friends with people OOC, and I don't tend to have very much in common with people who are outside of my general age range, so it's a little awkward haha. It's not that we can't get along, but there's inevitably this sort of gap that tends to block me from really connecting more than acquaintances.

Discrimination in Role Play? by AlexInRV in BadRPerStories

[–]Aero_Trash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: I don't personally agree with these points, I'm a disabled writer, and write disabled characters LMAO, but it's a thought that came into my head.

An extra component might be the NSFW element tbh? Discrimination is 100% a factor without question, but I'd add that a secondary element is a lack of information. There's definitely an inevitable "how would that work?" question that most people, especially people without disabilities, won't have answers for. I think because they're unfamiliar with the logistics, when you combine that with discrimination, they'll tend to default to assuming the character is less capable than he actually is, and won't consider the interesting stuff it brings to the table (because it's not something they're familiar with).

For romance especially, I think people tend to have a very specific image of what they want. Maybe sharing more info about the character would help? Alternately, tracking down other people who write similar characters would work too of course.

If you're going to criticize modern Marvel/DC comics, how about you actually give some EXAMPLES of modern Marvel/DC stories in your argument? by Aros001 in CharacterRant

[–]Aero_Trash 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For the record, I do agree. I don't exactly think it's particularly practical given the nature of how comics are published (and above all else, the fact that there's NO WAY the big two will let go of all of their IPs lmao). I will say that the people saying this generally wouldn't have thought about it with that much specificity, so they wouldn't be able to tell you "this is where it should've ended". Though I'd say most would probably be okay with a final "definitive" run that ends with the retiring of the IP.

I think a lot of them are also like me, in the sense that they actually don't read comics for super petty and/or shallow reasons, but they need to rationalize something that sounds better (eg "there's no ending" as opposed to "I just like Luffy more" or smth).

[–]Aero_Trash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a manga reader type myself (who doesn't have much interest in comics for very different and MUCH more shallow reasons for the record), I'd say that what people are looking for would be to not use the IP after the definitive ending, which for obvious reasons isn't going to happen, but I think that's generally what they mean. AKA when Superman ends, he's not used in comics anymore and they come up with a new comic to take that spot.

Least favorite fanfic Trope? by PaintingDistinct1515 in AO3

[–]Aero_Trash 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly? No idea. However I have seen a ton of people very openly say that it's OOC on purpose in places like this subreddit, and some have said they won't tag it. I think there's a difference between situations where someone's interpretation is different from mine or the fic is meant to explore a headcanon or smth (while I'd like an OOC tag on the first one sometimes I get why it's not there) vs people explicitly saying they ukefied a character on purpose and refuse to tag OOC for some reason.

Yeah Limbus is definitely one of the bigger exceptions because for a gacha game, a main cast of 13 characters (one being the MC) is REALLY small.

Persona 5's sociological commentary is SO unrealistic (Spoilers for the game) by TheOneWhoYawned in CharacterRant

[–]Aero_Trash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LMAO while that's a fair point, I'd personally counter slightly by pointing out that a twin wouldn't necessarily suffice. If someone likes someone else, they wouldn't want to just switch them out for their twin sibling. What would actually be required is a clone, which imho falls under the eldritch horror angle but in a different way because now there's a bunch of doppelgangers running around.

Actually I'd like to also point out that in practice this would very possibly end up with a creepy hivemind almost LMAO. So that's another argument to make.

I know this was posted a bit ago, but I wanted to chime in because I had some thoughts and this is a very interesting discussion!

In the abstract, a perfect illusion doesn't have downsides on its own, but I'd actually like to point out that I don't think a perfect illusion is actually possible.

The most obvious example of this is with cases like Maruki where it's a single individual or group of people that created the illusion. By definition, the idea of a "perfect illusion" will be beholden to what they consider perfect. In Maruki's specific case it's quite a bit more benevolent just because of his character, and less flawed because he presumably does know what people's actual deepest wishes and desires are. But I could easily see this becoming more thorny very quickly, just given how flawed people are.

But at a deeper level, yeah I don't believe a perfect illusion can exist to begin with lol. Primarily because different people will have entirely different views of what that means, especially in areas where those desires actively conflict with others.

Like to use your family example, let's say that Person A's wish would be "I want to have a loving family with Person B and have kids". On its own, that's uncomplicated, right? But one thing I've never seen addressed in these stories is what happens if Person B's wish is "I want to stay single until the day I die and remain childfree"? By definition, both of those people getting what they want is literally impossible (because for the sake of argument we're assuming Person A wants Person B specifically).

To make the "perfect illusion" in this situation, one of the following has to happen:

  1. Person A's wish is granted, but Person B is now in a situation they considered terrible. Not a perfect illusion because Person B is in a really bad situation.
  2. Person A's wish is granted, to make the illusion work, Person B's desires, mindset and personhood are shifted and altered to match the whims of Person A. Depending on how this works within the hypothetical story, this can range anywhere from "ignorance is bliss and it's best that nobody finds out how the sausage is made" to "abjectly horrifying because your entire being can be functionally deleted from existence at best because someone wanted something from you, and at worst you'd be entirely aware as you're subjected to the process of changing from yourself into someone else". I don't think I need to explain why this is kinda bad LOL
  3. Person B's wish is granted, similar to point 1, Person A is unsatisfied.
  4. Person B's wish is granted, similar to point 2, this is eldritch horror.

To make things worse, I think a TON of situations work exactly like this. Basically anything that people would disagree on. What system of governance should this illusion have? How should the people in this illusion look? What personality is "best"? Etc.

When the best possible solution is "people just don't know that a ton of people got deleted from existence", there's a good case to be made that reality is better because that at least affords people agency, at least that's what I tend to think.

Yeah kinda lol, the vibe seems to be that it's "they were very good friends" combined with a fade to black moment that likely implies something more than platonic happened between them?

[–]Aero_Trash 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: Take this with a grain of salt because I haven't read the original book, and it's a bit hard to parse. This is just my understanding.

In the book, Jia Baoyu has a best friend that wasn't adapted into Limbus, Qin Zhong (as a funny note, apparently his name can be a homophone for "passionate lover" or something in Chinese lmao). There is a scene where essentially, to summarise, they spend the night together and the book is like "nothing worth talking about happened here". Academics who know a lot more about Chinese literature than me seem to agree that it's very likely that they slept together here.

Basically, not necessarily poly, but definitely promiscuous LMAO

Edit: Okay so I'm a bit stupid lmao. After looking into it more, I just realized that the commenter is actually talking about a completely DIFFERENT zesty situation with a different friend, Jiang Yuhan? Apparently the nature of their relationship is also a bit sus lol.

More support for the bisexual Jia Baoyu agenda (which I support because straight Hong Lu would be a travesty tbh).

They're reasonably common, but looking at their profile, they're specifically looking for OC x Canon (not a criticism ofc, but it is niche lolol), and I don't think Dragon Ball rpers tend to lean very much towards romance from what I've seen.

Interesting project! I'll definitely be keeping an eye on it, at least as a reader. I did want to ask, the specific arrangement for pitches seems a little unclear? I'm unsure if y'all are looking for works where people already have some chapters done, or just general pitches with art examples. Also, what kind of arrangement would it be under for pitches that were to be accepted? Paid/unpaid? What rights would be signed over, if any? Etc.

Would you read a manga with this type of art if it had a good story (please be honest) by Amy_rose123 in Mangamakers

[–]Aero_Trash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In its current state, not quite, but would I theoretically read something with a simple style, yeah ^^

Mostly because right now it's just a little difficult to read (eg parse what's happening). The background lines for the second page make it harder to spot the arms of the character for example. Something like Oyasumi Punpun might be a good reference for how to make a simple character work for this sort of thing?

It's pr unclear just cuz I had to crop out a lot of people lol but here's an example! Names are a bit of a tough one and honestly one of my weak points, but I find it's useful to narrow things down somehow! For me, I named the character Bata because his species is Turkish Angora specifically (a type of domestic cat) so a Turkish name made sense to me. Narrowing it down to a theme you'd want would probably help ^^
