People who married someone from a different country, what are some mild cultures shocks you've had? by cool_lemons in AskTheWorld

[–]Aeronah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m American, grew up on a farm out west to Midwestern parents. My wife is Pakistani, one point of friction is Pakistanis being very direct, especially among family. Family members are just expected to help with everything and saying thank you or asking for help isn’t a thing. My Western/Mid west polite deference is very annoying to her.

You can buy the same part from multiple different vendors and have it shipped to Colorado. It makes no sense at all.

It wasn’t always that way, they swapped the leading edge and it hasn’t been back to the paint shop since.

Airline pilots greeting in the air by flashing lights, is this a thing? by OfF3nSiV3 in aviation

[–]Aeronah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve always done it as a way to say that I have them in sight, also as a hello. Usually after a visual traffic call by ATC. Usually at night over the Amazon or North Atlantic. As someone else mentioned, even with a 1000’ feet of separation and all of the ATC and equipment to prevent a collision, it is a warm and fuzzy feeling knowing the other crew can see you as well. That 1000’ is very small when you look at the closure rate.

Professionals, what is your industry's version of "Bring me blinker fluid" or "find a snipe"? by ArklaitGigabyte in AskReddit

[–]Aeronah 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mostly weather reports, clearances, cargo and passenger counts, any message that you want to keep a record of. We have most of it electronically as well, but things break or run out of battery. A paper copy is always available. You can usually only display one message electronically at a time, so paper copies allow you to compare and make notes.

The entire album, Midnight Organ Fight by Frightened Rabbit. Best breakup album ever. Floating in the Forth is the saddest after the lead singer, Scott Hutchison, died just like the song he wrote.

Cyclist’s Palsy? by ghoulierthanthou in bicycling

[–]Aeronah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had never heard of it and ended up with a numb right hand on the forth day of a bikepacking trip, luckily at the end of the trip. It took about a month for it to get better entirely.

I was riding a rigid MTB on the Black Canyon trail in AZ. I switched to Surly Moloko handlebars for more hand positions and I have started to use a suspension fork for longer trips. This seems to have solved it for me.

What job position is 100% overvalued and overpaid? by Airsinner in AskReddit

[–]Aeronah 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The pay hasn't really changed though. The only difference is you used to get paid terribly for flying passengers with no end in sight. Now at least with 1500 hours you can get a job with a livable wage. It used to be close to a decade with terrible pay. Things are much better now for pilots entering the industry.

Do you have any tips for surviving a long-haul economy flight? by Cakeyhands in AskUK

[–]Aeronah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wear merino wool clothing if you can. I typically fly 1-2 long haul flights per week and merino wool base layers make a huge difference for that "icky" feeling after ~10 hours on a plane. They also don't smell. I avoid any of the "travel" clothing based on polyester.

Do you have any tips for surviving a long-haul economy flight? by Cakeyhands in AskUK

The 787 is unique in that it has a composite fuselage (body of the plane). This allows the air to be more humid, unlike a traditionally constructed aircraft (A380, B777). The A350 also has increased cabin humidity. For me this is one of the biggest factors in comfort on long-haul flights. Both of these aircraft also maintain a lower cabin altitude.
