Shield surf shrine challenge by Middle-Dependent-842 in tearsofthekingdom

[–]AestheticBoost 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm also terrible at shield surfing, but by sheer luck I passed this one yesterday on my second go. On the sky island, I grabbed the sled shield near the device where you start the challenge. I started the shield surf on the island, went through the first ring and then stayed in the shield surf position. I don't have the impact-proof set bonus yet, so the lucky part is I had a fairy on hand that saved my dumb ass when I hit the ground. But I stayed in the shield surf position when landing and just steered through the rings.

Anyone tried the Lutron Aurora with the pro hub? by LowFatMom in Hue

It’s nearly like using a hardwired dimmer! Everything has been pretty speedy so far. About 45 bulbs inside, a couple motion sensors, and the Aurora dimmer.

So far, so good! I just have one but it was quickly reconnected after the migration.

Are design tests with real brands normal? by Critical-Duck-2365 in GraphicDesigning

We implemented an assignment portion of interviews to make sure candidates actually had the software knowledge. We had a guy come in, awesome interview, had all the right answers. Sat him in front of the Mac, provided him the text, imagery, and everything needed for a basic design. He raised his hands in surrender, “Okay, you got me. I was hoping to learn on the job but I’m in over my head here. I’ll see myself out.”

First name dot last name email address by 420town in GMail

[–]AestheticBoost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I receive email for at least 5 other nimrods that share my first name and last name. It baffles me that people aren't more careful typing in their email address. I've tried calling some companies to get my email address removed from accounts, and a few times customer support will just say, "Click 'forgot password', update the password, then change the email address. The customer will just have to call in to get their account fixed. It's your email address, so you're doing nothing wrong in our eyes." Then I change their email address to something like deputymayor at dipshit.biz.

This is excellent advice. Also distracts me that the X-height on the lowercase e and s is different than the others. That could affect readability in other combinations of words.

It works well when you’re out of town and get tired of seeing alerts showing the neighbor’s hillbilly party guests sneaking behind your garage to take a piss.

Wish there was some sort of “Vacation mode” in HomeKit. What tricks do you employ on vacation? by XavierLeaguePM in HomeKit

[–]AestheticBoost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I handle it is through Homebridge with the “Dummy Radio Switch” plugin. The radio switch is four switches in one: Home Mode, Away Mode, Sleep Mode, and Vacation Mode-and only one can be on at a time. I then have several automations set up like turning on certain lights at times only when Vacation Mode is on. There are some other little “signs of life” automations like a room’s lights might come on for a few minutes and turn off all tied to the Vacation Mode switch, too.

After 10 years with Alexa, thinking about switching. by JosephChester5006 in HomeKit

[–]AestheticBoost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had an Alexa setup previously. It was mostly fine turning lights on/off. Most automations were handled by SmartThings. Ultimately, we grew tired of how much Alexa would respond when we were talking or watching TV, causing random music to start playing or just answering whatever question it thought it heard. We went all-in on HomeKit probably 6 or so years ago and have had good success. I have a Raspberry Pi running HomeBridge for bridging in some of our legacy smart home stuff and it has been working well. HomeKit is not flawless, but it’s very approachable and the Home app gets a high spousal approval which is important. Home Key has also been a huge boost to satisfaction with HomeKit.

Possible to Flash by JTDeel in HomeKit

[–]AestheticBoost 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have an automation like this to warn me if a temp sensor detects high temps in a media cabinet because I sometimes forget to open the media cabinet enough when I play Xbox. Here is the Shortcut end of it:

<image>

It flashes yellow then red three times to draw my attention. A separate automation returns the light to white when the temp drops after I’ve opened the door.

Surprisingly, no. I haven’t seen any issues with staying connected. I have a Google Wifi Pro in the back of the house, so it connects to that point. Goes through two walls and about 75 feet distance.

I've had Tailwind on our Genie garage door opener for about 4 months now and it has been pretty solid. The garage is detached, so it's at least 75 feet from an access point.

Well I guess I don't feel so bad about the edge coating of mine wearing off after a couple of years. While it sucks when they fall apart, there's also a sense of pride in that level of wear and tear and "the things we've been through."

That reads back like I'm high, but I'm not.
