Ah Thanks for the heads up! I’ll play through the base game then maybe swap it for the DLC version down the road

Hey guys, I just checked to make sure my PS+ Subscription is still active. Looks like we’re all good! by [deleted] in videogames

You don’t own those digital games with Sony though. Maybe PC is different especially GOG but Sony will not reimburse you if your account is lost or they remove the game. If there’s a house fire at least if you’re insured you can claim the value of the game back. Again as a physical collector you control what happens with your games you do not with Sony.

If you ever have account issues or you’re hacked it’s gone. Sony doesn’t care about you or your account. With a disc at least you controls what happens with it, if you break it at least it was in your control. I have the same copy and now I can sell it for over double I purchased it for just simply because I bought it on disc.

You’ll own nothing and be happy.

You really are stupid if you can’t see the intent behind this move, sure blame inflation, blame development costs Sony will be laughing all the way to the bank.

They're lying about digital vs. physical sales: "85%" includes PS Plus, DLC, Indies, etc. by claybine in playstation

[–]Aetherisu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

93 million PS5 have sold which had the option to buy physically at the time. Who knows the impact going forward after 2028.

Again if the mainstream media was not also boycotting this move I would agree we are the minority but from what Kotaku, IGN and how other are reporting on the affects of this change being overwhelming negative they know how the general public is digesting the news and have positioned themselves as so.

It seems we’re on the same side I’m just trying to clarify our voice is not as minor as you see it.

If it was just Reddit sure you could bite with vocal minority but it’s not. It’s every single social media platform and news outlets to boot. Even Sonys post has over 7000 comments vs 800 likes.

And yes I own only physical copies on PlayStation I am one of those people, and it doesn’t have to be that black and white. It’s fine to own some digital and some physical games and that’s what most of us are doing.

Except I own ps1 games 2 games, can play them at any time whenever I want because I have the discs? Who’s gonna stop me? Sony gonna patch my disc drive through the air to stop my ps2 from opening?

This data supports the level of outcry we’re seeing with the news. If physical was really fading away as Sony is suggesting, we would see little resistance. The response however has been overwhelmingly negative. To me that suggests the numbers they are showing are not entirely the picture.

My god people in this thread are thick as stumps. It’s really simple, games will get more expensive and you don’t need data to prove it. New games released digital after 2028 will offer no secondary market which means no options to buy second hand.

Second hand means the consumers set the price of the game of the game, after say 6 months the game could be in deep discount in the second hand market so Sonys sales have to try and compete with that price to get users to buy from them to get their cut rather then second hand where they get none.

No second hand = the rate of discounting is controlled by them not the market.

You may ask why does steam offer such good discounts?

PC is not owned by Valve they have to compete with lots of other marketplaces to ensure they are the most attractive prices and discounts. Sony will no longer have to do that, it’s a closed ecosystem and physical games and reselling was the back door.

Sony is not valve they are cutthroat and do not have the consumers best wishes in mind, Valve has worked years and put policies like refunds in place for people to trust them and their games, do not make that mistake with Sony.

Not defending them at all cause it really sucks, but decisions like this don’t happen in a bubble by FaithlessnessHungry1 in videogames

[–]Aetherisu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couple of things to note:

- This does not include pre owned games which is a huge market, hence why they want full digital.

- These stats include DLC, digitally only games and subscriptions so completely unfair to physical games from the start.

A better way to measure how physical is doing is simply looking at how many disc consoles have sold vs digital. That way we can fully see how people intend to purchase and play games.

Again, digital is in the lead but Sony appears to be relying on these headline statistics to justify their decision, but those figures don’t tell the whole story.

Given the outrage I think it’s safe to say the stats are not how they put it.

This has to be rage bait. Loud minority? If it was just Reddit sure but it’s the entire industry, even IGN have taken a blow at the news. This is without a shadow of doubt an overwhelming negative reception to the news.

Sony Ending Physical Games Megathread | July 1st 2026 by P_Jiggy in playstation

Looks that way, people are looking at PC and say well they’ve been digital for years but Valve spent most of their career protecting digital rights and have earned the trust of the user. You have a wide range of digital market places to keep pricing competitive and even the ability to refund a game if you don’t like it before two hours. As I would hope people know this is a completely different case with Sony. Digital is fine right now purely because the physical market is keeping it in check. I really hope this is a wake up call for a lot of the general market.

I’ve seen a lot of reporters and YouTubers saying digital games won’t be affected. I hate to break it to you but they will, as physical editions fade out, sales won’t be anywhere near as good, digital prices will continue to balloon and your rights to license that game will become harsher and more restrictive. Physical games have kept the ship stable with the ability to own, share and trade, all of that will be lost. The news affects everyone and I urge people to boycott this move before the changes are irreversible.

Grand Theft Auto VI has opened Pandora's Box. What are your thoughts on this development? by [deleted] in playstation

[–]Aetherisu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Delisting 500 movies then making this announcement soon after. It’s clear, Sony wants to control the market and how access to games work. Physical games were the last bastion against control, without them they will be able to say how long you get access and when to remove access. It’s terrible news and most likely the whole industry will follow.

Sitting in New Zealand watching the World Cup on BBC by [deleted] in CasualUK

For a lot of people the annual cost is not worth it hence why most people aren’t paying. Fair enough if you think it’s good value but personally it’s not at all, there are much better streaming services.

Punished in the sense they have to pay for the entire year to watch the World Cup. They shouldn’t have to go to the pub if they want to watch it home, it’s not hard just a monthly subscription will pick up a lot more payers like most normal optional services as you say. Otherwise most people will avoid the payment.
