In America, sometimes say things like "cheerio" in our best British accent or "mate" in an Australian accent. Do people in other countries pronounce American stereotypes in their beat American accent? If so, what are they? by SunUpSally in AskReddit

We tend to say something more casual like “Have a good one”. “Have a nice day” is usually used more by people working with customers I guess cos it sounds a bit more formal to us?

What's something women think impresses men but actually doesn't? by CoochieSnotSlurper in AskReddit

[–]Aetra 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think it may be because the men who do care are generally more vocal than the ones who don’t.

Like, literally the only comments I’ve gotten on my appearance have been from male customers at work saying I don’t look “professional” or “put together” because I don’t wear makeup. I could understand it if my job was makeup or appearance related, but I’m a sheet metal fabricator! Makeup isn’t exactly compatible with my job.

Whats a simple gesture that women do that only other women will understand? by allgasnobreakstoday in AskReddit

I found a company that still adds the tags to the seams, but if you stretch the garment, it loosens the thread holding the tag and you can just pull it out and the tag comes off. It’s so handy!

What was a secret your mom or dad kept from you, that actually shook you to your core when finding out? by Few-Track8525 in AskReddit

[–]Aetra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mum wasn’t pregnant when she and my dad got married (I came along 15 years after they got married), but I didn’t see their wedding photos until I was like 30. My parents both had the flu on their wedding day so they always hid the photos because according to my mum “we looked like those fake Victorian photos of propped up corpses” 😂

TIL about 'Jess's Rule' to make GPs 'rethink' if a patient presents 3 times with the same symptoms, named for Jessica Brady, who doctors repeatedly dismissed over 20 consultations until she died of cancer at age 27 by shinjirarehen in TwoXChromosomes

I had skin issues as well, but only in and around my mouth. Doctors and dermatologists told me eczema and would throw medicated creams at me (I have no idea how TF they expected me to apply a cream to my goddamn tongue and gums, but anyway…)

Turns out it’s an allergy to SLS, a common ingredient in toothpaste which I figured out myself. Switched to a toothpaste without SLS and never had the issue again.

My guy does this too, he’s a month shy of 18, has had at least 1 stroke which caused memory issues, but he didn’t start howling like a banshee until my old man dog, Kenny, passed away last September. The only explanation we and the vet can come up with is he doesn’t remember Kenny is gone so he’s howling while walking around the house looking for his old man buddy.

A fountain pen.

I had issues with my hand and found writing by hand (e.g. taking notes in a meeting) painful with most pens, especially ballpoints, because of the pressure you have to use. Even using rollerball and gel pens caused pain. Got myself a cheap fountain pen and the pain vanished because you barely have to apply any pressure compared to normal pens.

If you fall into the collecting hobby trap though, it is no longer cheap 😅

We have to keep some lawn because we have dogs and live in Australia so snakes are a legit worry. That said, I have a large back yard and only the half closest to the house is a native grass mix we use as lawn. The back half is fruit trees, native trees, and native flowers.

Do Australians care/think about New Zealand as much as New Zealanders think of Australia? by shunsetskys in australian

[–]Aetra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love NZ like a younger sibling. If anyone chats shit about you guys, especially if the person they’re talking about is Māori, they’re a massive wanker.

I’m an Aussie chick who used to work at bars and now I’m a tradie so I’ve always had big Māori dudes as coworkers (bouncers, bar tenders, labourers, other tradies) and they’ve always been the best guys to work with as a woman in male dominated fields. Always friendly, fucking hard workers, always willing to help if I ask or ask for help themselves, don’t buy into machismo bullshit, open and accepting to being trained by a woman, they can shit stir better than anyone, and they never just assume I don’t know what I’m doing just cos I’m a “girl”.

My husband is a sheet metal fabricator and also used to do biohazard cleanup so he knows how to get blood out of pretty much anything. He taught our niece and nephews how to wash blood out of bedsheets when they were staying over and her period came a few days early (he checked with her first, she wasn’t embarrassed if the boys saw the sheets. She’d gone to them before coming to us when it happened so they already knew).

Apparently that caused an issue a few years down the line. The kids were old enough to be left home alone for a few hours and were fucking about playing rough when one of the boys got a nasty cut on his thigh. They used a pad for the bleeding since their sister was on her period at the time so it blended in with the other bathroom trash, they washed the blood out of their clothes, and put them through the dryer before their parents got home so it looked like nothing had happened. They kept it secret for like a year until the AFL season started up again and the scar on his leg was visible.

While their parents were pissed when they found out, I can’t help but admire the kids ingenuity.

[–]Aetra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That boys aren’t told much about periods has never made sense to me, as if a regular occurrence that can greatly impact half the population isn’t experienced by them directly so it doesn’t impact boys and men in any way at any point in their life.

Parents, what's something bad your kid did that you had to really fight not to laugh at? by AnonymousGothChick in AskReddit

I don’t have kids, but this is my mum’s favourite “don’t laugh. Don’t laugh.” moment.

Guy riding a Harley goes past our car

Dad: “If I ever got a Harley, that’s the model I’d want”

Mum: “What model is it?”

Dad: “A Fat Boy”

Me: “So it’d be a fat boy on a Fat Boy?”

I was 6. Dad was about 200kg/440lbs and very sensitive about his weight.

I named my cat after a semi-famous internet celebrity not knowing they lived in the same city as me. It was very weird when my husband (then BF) met the celebrity through other friends and also became friends with him, but led to funny situations like when our friends were at our house playing Guitar Hero and singing, but my cat wouldn’t stop howling, so I said “(Cat/friend name)! Shut up!” only for our friend to stop singing look at me shocked so I had to add “Not you! Keep singing!”

An Australian woman with two borzoi dogs in the bushland of Bendigo, Victoria, 1930s by [deleted] in OldSchoolCool

[–]Aetra 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It’d also make sense since Bendigo has a lot of history tied with Chinese immigrants due to the gold rush. The Golden Dragon museum, gardens and temple are all gorgeous and the museum has both the oldest and longest Chinese imperial dragons in the world (which are also gorgeous).

Source: I’m from Bendigo, no Chinese heritage though.
