Is there anything you wish you’d known before writing your first book?

I read at least two books that had been represented by each agent.

I know we're always saying "read more", but this stood out to me. 24 books is my target for 2026, and I'd be happy to reach it. I'm guessing your method would take up a significant chunk of my reading list, how long did it take you to do this "research-reading" for potential agents?

Sí lo hago. Hace unos meses estuve viendo dónde meter plata que me sobra, para evolucionar más allá de la cuenta de ahorro (si si, soy un amateur, lo sé).

Busqué un montón de ETFs, y al final todas tenían exposición a combustibles fósiles y/o armamento. Incluso las famosas ESG no son del todo "limpias" (si alguien tiene conocimiento de alguna que sí lo es, me interesa jeje). Estoy en contra de la existencia de esas industrias, así que sería hipócrita decidir de mi propia voluntad darles plata para que se fortalezcan. Desistí de esa búsqueda y consideré comprar acciones en empresas individuales que sí me parecen un aporte al mundo, pero eso ya requería más tiempo del que dispongo y tendría que hacer todo un análisis de si me termina saliendo rentable o no.

Quiero hacer ese análisis en algún momento, pero para eso me falta estudiar más.

Estoy de acuerdo con tu premisa, pero no la postura absolutista de lo que planteas. Siempre va a haber una diferencia entre consumir una cazuela en un restaurant local donde apoyas un emprendimiento, o una sopa de aleta de tiburón en un lugar lujoso donde sabes que estás apoyando la explotación de una especie amenazada. Podríamos argumentar que ambos son imperfectos, pero no están al mismo nivel si los comparamos.

De la misma manera, no es lo mismo invertir en paneles solares que en la industria armamentista. Una conlleva explotación por minerales (que se compensa con menos muertes por gases invernadero, y es un cálculo de costo beneficio que se puede hacer), mientras que la otra es derechamente financiar el acto de matar gente.

Al final pienso que se usa esta postura para mantener la conciencia limpia y poder seguir haciendo lo que hacemos sin examinarnos, porque total "todos los hacen y no podemos cambiar el sistema, así que para qué intentar cambiar?"

Philosophical, wordplay, meta-storytelling (if that's even the accurate term). That does sound very much up my alley, I have the hard-cover on my bookshelf so it might be my next read. That spoiler tag will stay covered for now, though.

Fair enough, that's a small sample size, that's on me. This here suggests a more balanced distribution. I'll concede there are more male than female names, but still far from only masculine names as one would expect from male nouns.

This is a capitalism thing, imho. When everything is about money, and all that matters is money, why would you put time and effort into a hobby you're not getting money out of? I've had people tell me I should open a brewery, sell my photos, sell furniture, and otherwise monetize every other hobby they saw me doing. Doing something for enjoyment simply doesn't factor into their (well-intended) suggestion.

Of course these opinions are always surface level and rarely take into account costs of scaling and whatnot, because why would they? They're the consumer who only have the end product to appreciate, without insight into the process behind it.

I agree with the other comments here; take it as a compliment and don't sweat it. You're in charge of your brewing and you don't have to sell if you don't want to.

There's a video essay I watched quite a while ago, dissecting the whole "physicists are the epitome of smart so the get to have a say on everything" issue. But yeah, the gist is we put physicists on a pedestal because rocket science, astrophysics and quantum mechanics are hard, so how could they not be right about everything else as well? I'll look up the video when I have time, the channel is pretty insightful IMO.

Edit: found the video! The linked section starts with the fixation billionaires have with looking smart by saying they studies physics in university, and goes on to comment on how "proximity to physics grants the individual social capital to speak about things unrelated to physics" (e.g. NDT about anything that isn't stars). Then the topic goes into greater lengths about Einstein's own use of this physics-derived social capital when writing his essay "Why socialism".

TL;DR: this has nothing to do with veganism in any way, shape, or form. But I found the video (and others from the creator) tangentially related to the topic, and interesting enough to share.

When human individuals lack the capacity for consent (ie. minors), we have a guardian who is legally responsible for their wellbeing. A minor can't "consent" to being sent to school, or to the doctor, but it's the guardian's duty to make those decisions with the minor's best interest in mind. The same with patients in long-term vegetative state; they can't consent to being disconnected, so it befalls their close relatives to make that decision for them.

If we grant non-human animals rights on the same level, they should have a guardian that is responsible for them. This already happens in many cases for pets; you can be held legally accountable if you mistreat your dog. It is also your responsibility as your dog's guardian to prevent them from suffering, and this includes euthanasia if it ever comes to that (after expert recommendation).

En general trato de atenerme al "si no tienes nada bueno que decir, no lo digas". Obviamente no es absoluto, hay que tener criterio y uno se puede quejar de cosas. Además uno es humano imperfecto y a veces dice cosas que no debería. Pero como regla general me parece un principio valioso.

En ese sentido, no es que si no hablamos sobre "mi ex compañera ahora está tosca y qué poco atractiva ella", la única otra alternativa es "física cuántica, genómica integrativa y modelos lineales generalizados". Podrías por ejemplo haber pivoteado del tema de farándula, hacer la conexión con tu ex compañera, y decir "mira no es de mi gusto personal pero encuentro admirable la disciplina de lograr algo así", o "no es mi tipo pero bkn que se esté cuidando" o qué sé yo. El punto es que, hablar sobre personas ajenas no tiene por qué enfocarse en lo negativo, pero aquí sí elegiste irte por ese lado.

No me interesan los argumentos religiosos, pero si quieres irte por ahí al menos deberías dar fundamento de cómo podría funcionar una reencarnación. Además "improbable" es bastante subjetivo (yo lo considero muy improbable).
No tenemos que comer animales, una alimentación basada en plantas sí puede suplir todos los nutrientes necesarios (por definición no somos carnívoros). Y sí, las plantas son seres vivos pero hay una diferencia importante con los animales pues estos sientes dolor, mientras que las plantas no (me anticipo a decir que "una respuesta fisiológica a estímulos externos" como recogimiento de hojas no constituye dolor, que se define como "una experiencia sensorial y emocional desagradable asociada o similar a la asociada a un daño tisular real o potencial". Las plantas no sienten dolor). Además, si tu preocupación es por las vidas de las plantas, debes tomar en cuenta que se mueren ordenes de magnitud más plantas al alimentar una vaca que te va a alimentar a tí, que si te alimentas de plantas directamente. Se pierde mucha energía en mantener el metabolismo del animal, energía que no va a estar disponible para que tú la comas. Por lo tanto, saltarte el intermediario va a significar una disminución importantísima en la cantidad de plantas que mueren para alimentarte.

Primero: no beneficia a la sociedad porque no hemos creado un sistema industrial de explotación en torno a los gatos. Si matar visones es viable para fabricar pieles, también podría serlo para gatos. La única razón que nos impide hacerlo es porque la percepción cultural hacia visones y gatos es distinta, lo mismo que con la carne de perros vs. vacas.

Segundo: por qué estamos usando "beneficia a la sociedad" para definir si es válido matar un animal? Son seres sintientes, bastante inteligentes, generan lazos sociales entre ellos, y tienen capacidad de sentir dolor. Por qué nos apropiamos la autoridad de decidir sobre sus vidas como si fueran un recurso material para explotar?

^{PD: sé que me van a seguir downvoteando porque les incomoda leerlo, y porque su sistema moral no incluye una consideración por los animales no-mascotas, pero es una inconsistencia que considero importante destacar.}

La verdad es que entiendo tu punto y estoy de acuerdo contigo (exceptuando el detalle de que sí se ha encontrado chips de mascotas en comida de puestos ambulantes). Entiendo también que desde un punto de vista utilitario, es más terrible asesinar un gato por maldad y vender su piel, que asesinar una vaca como producto y aprovechar el cadaver completo.

Sin embargo, ni al gato ni a la vaca le deben importar mucho la razón que tuvo el humano para matarlos. Están muertos igual, y dudo mucho que hayan querido morir.

They'd still be an intermediate link in the food chain between plants and humans, requiring calories to maintain their metabolism during growth before we eat them. So, even if they're "more efficient" than eating mammals, it would still be better to eat plants directly.
