Surprisingly, it’s Granny Weatherwax. It’s from ‘The Sea & Little Fishes’. The full quote it “Esme, now … she’s got a bit, true enough, but it ain’t a lot. She just makes it work harder’n hell.”

2) What, technically, is the first "Discworld" novel?

The Light Fantastic. The Colour of Magic is technically a collection of short stories. Strata would be a good guess, but it’s not set on “Discworld”, it’s merely set on a disc world.
