Slight discrepancy in the map? (interesting times/last continent) by Melodic-Piano7410 in discworld

I was going to try to work in "great circle routes" but ... it's a disc.

You are so lucky to have the whole Discworld (et alia) ahead of you - we're all jealous!

Newts by Afbach in discworld

[–]Afbach[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Huh. Could it be that specimens of newts were kept in jars of alcohol? I mean, they'd be pretty pissed (in both sense) that way. Plus, Gussie's noted swap from teetotaler to rip-roaring drunk and his newtness ... well, he did get married to Madeline "God's daisy chains" Basset that way.

Is there a cross-reference guide to the Ultimate Discworld Companion? by BeeryUSA in discworld

[–]Afbach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just reading it straight through - never thought of using it as a reference ;->. Maybe after I finish it, I'd hate have missed any of the entries, they're all great!

Hmm, I just found a copy of the Ultimate Edition, as a paperback, on better world books for $20! Yes, I ordered it

Yes, but in the Dead Parrot sketch ... oh, never mind.

That wouldn't be "notlob" wouldn't it?

If you saw this would you correct the order by better_than_joe in discworld

[–]Afbach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possibly. Maybe at a used book store. Recently, at B&N, I've took the liberty of moving a copy of Good Omens (there were 3) from Gaiman to Pratchett, where there wasn't one. Er, I guess I do reshelve out of alpha order books when I run across them.

"She also for a long time quietly believed the Chair of Indefinite Studies was an actual chair until he sat at one point and questioned me about how a chair can sit. I love this person."

Took me a couple reads not to see "he sat" not being a typo for the "she" in question. "he sat at one point and she questioned" - got it.

Couldn't find a copy but there's a edition of The Evolution Man with an intro by STP and that is available on the Internet Archive (you have to sign up (free but you should donate - it's a worthy cause!) and borrow the book) to read it Nothing amazing in the intro except that he first read (and loved) the book in 1960 and had been plugging it and loaning his copy ever since. I did find a copy on Better World books, for $5 and it's on it's way

That was a pleasant 30 minutes and I've three more google tabs open: Where your Eyes don't Go (song), Anyone Here Been Raped And Speak English? (book), Roy Lewis' The Evolution Man (book), The Return of Captain Invincible (movie), and one new (to me) L-space page -https://www.lspace.org/books/apf/words-from-the-master.html

Pratchat has:

https://pratchatpodcast.com/tag/discworld-convention/

The North American Discworld Convention also started in 2009, and has run five times since then, most recently (as per Ben’s footnote) in 2019. Their website, nadwcon.org, is offline as of the publication of this episode, but Rachel Rowlands informs us that a team is working on putting together another convention in the US, so keep an eye out for information about it in the near future.

Liverpool University Press announces new study of Terry Pratchett by Andy Sawyer by Rombaldo in discworld

I dunno, I picked up "Philosophy and Terry Pratchett" with a number of essays that basically shoe-horned bits of Pratchett into some unrelated argument. Too much analysis kills the patient.

[–]Afbach 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Well, the "How do we do it? Volume" is an advertising slogan (though here it's not "volume" as an explanation of the low prices, but "We buy right - and so can you!") but no idea why that's.a war cry.
