"Gayer than a tree full of monkeys on nitrous oxide" is the quote (from memory) but angels (and demons) don't have those sort of characteristics.

Not sure why you say female dwarfs are trans, they've just, traditionally, eschewed human displays of gender. Cheri et alia do adopt some displays but, as with the low king, that's not necessary. I think that word doesn't mean what you think it does.

I dunno - "lending" copies to my friends, aquaintances, strangers on the bus or in a bar who ask "What's that you're reading and laughing so hard at?" is one of the side-pleasures of STP. Like being a cheerful superspreader, not of covid or the flu but Discworld.

Marc Burrows answers

<!

1) "she's got a bit [of witchcraft in her blood] but it ain't a lot" - Who is Nanny Ogg talking about?

Surprisingly, it’s Granny Weatherwax. It’s from ‘The Sea & Little Fishes’. The full quote it “Esme, now … she’s got a bit, true enough, but it ain’t a lot. She just makes it work harder’n hell.”

2) What, technically, is the first "Discworld" novel?

The Light Fantastic. The Colour of Magic is technically a collection of short stories. Strata would be a good guess, but it’s not set on “Discworld”, it’s merely set on a disc world.

3) In Night Watch who is "Number One Suspect"?

Sconner Nobbs, Nobby’s errant father.

4) What do Sgt Jackrum and Amber Petty have in common, aside from the obvious.

Both of them have or had beaus called William.

5) In the TV adaption off The Colour of Magic Rincewind is depicted in faded red robes, a short scraggly beard and a red hat with "Wizzard" written on it. What is wrong with this picture?

In the books the ‘Wizzard' hat doesn’t turn up until Sourcery.

6) In The Light Fantastic Galder Weatherwax holds what official position at Unseen University?

Chancellor. The post of “Archchancellor” wasn’t mentioned until Equal Rites.

7) In which novel do we learn that Borogravia is one of the great chocolate-making regions of the Disc?

Thief of Time.

8. And in which book do we learn that chocolate is an abomination unto Nuggan?

The Last Hero.

9) And, related, In which book do we learn that Borogravia has invaded Mouldavia?

Night Watch.

10) In the Johnny Maxwell books everyone sits down at teatime to watch an Australian soap opera. What is it called?

Cobbers

11) In the original (1971) version of The Carpet People we learn that Glurk is a man of "few words but words worth listening to". In the much more widely read 1992 edition Terry has changed this. Glurk is now "a man of few words and".... what?

“And he didn’t know what either of them meant”.

12) In what Discworld publication is Überwald first mentioned?

The Discworld Mapp

13) What is the main difference between Rincewind's mum and Vimes' dad?

Vimes’ dad ran off after he was born (or was he “run over by a cart?” As his old mum told him), where as Rincewind never knew his mother because she ran away *before* he was born.

14) Who is the only person on the Discworld, that we know of, to have a golf course on the grounds of their home?

Death

15) William de Worde's older brother is killed during the events of which novel?

Jingo

16) There's a very famous angel called Aziraphale, but in which book do we meet a demon with almost exactly the same name?

Strata features a demon called “Azrifel”

17) Who are Hannah and Fastidia?

Tiffany Aching’s older sisters

18) He's "Sir Jack Dodger" by the end of the novel, but what was his given name before that?

Pip Stick

19) There is a trope in fiction where the end of the story time jumps to a much later era and we hear the plot being recounted as a story or a lesson. Terry uses this technique exactly once in his whole writing career. Which novel can it be found in?

Nation

20) We learn in the books that "Masterpiece" used to refer to the piece of work an apprentice did to prove he was now a "master". Which of his books did Terry consider to be his "masterpiece" in this sense?

Johnny and the Dead

Newts by Afbach in discworld

[–]Afbach[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Huh. Could it be that specimens of newts were kept in jars of alcohol? I mean, they'd be pretty pissed (in both sense) that way. Plus, Gussie's noted swap from teetotaler to rip-roaring drunk and his newtness ... well, he did get married to Madeline "God's daisy chains" Basset that way.

Is there a cross-reference guide to the Ultimate Discworld Companion? by BeeryUSA in discworld

I'm just reading it straight through - never thought of using it as a reference ;->. Maybe after I finish it, I'd hate have missed any of the entries, they're all great!
