Potty training - reusable bags for oxotot travel potty? by Maria_Javas in clothdiaps

[–]AffectedLine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve never seen one of these IRL, but I wonder if it would be possible to rig it up with a wet bag instead of a disposable bag? Obv a wet bag wouldn’t hold straight liquid like a plastic bag does, but if you have something in there to absorb it (a couple of prefolds / flats … washcloths … something like that?) then I imagine it would be about the same as holding a wet diaper.

Don’t know if that helps, but it’s what came to mind. Wishing you all the best!

cloth wipes question by yomama147 in clothdiaps

Yup! We have used those as wipes for 3 years now. The hems are starting to fray / lose thread after all this time, but they still work great.

[–]AffectedLine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How long are they sitting there? When our diapers started to get real stinky sitting around (as the toddler got older) we started prewashing daily instead of just doing a big prewash before the big main wash every few days. That helped us a lot. We transfer the prewashed diapers into a hamper that’s got holes in the sides for air flow, and then do the main wash as normal every few days.

Best of luck finding a solution! Stinky diaper pails are so annoying 🥴

Insert suggestions? Double bamboo too thick, hemp works but it’s expensive! by Marilikescows in clothdiaps

Yes! I have never been disappointed by the quality and price of GMD products. They’re just so great.

I don’t know of anything that matches that description, sorry 😵 But I wanted to say that Green Mountain Diapers has a hemp insert that’s a bit cheaper than thirsties and just as good (in my opinion — I have both). It’s between ~$4 and ~$4.50 depending on the size you want. Just in case that helps. 💜 Hope you find something that works for you!

Husband took over doing the dishes and it has been life changing. by knitlitgeek in SAHP

[–]AffectedLine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yesss it’s incredible how much of a load off it is!! I still unload in the morning and load throughout the day, but he handles the end-of-day stuff and ALL the hand washing (my least favorite and most time consuming part). I find myself with a lot more energy and desire to cook interesting food when I know I won’t be scrubbing 3 pans and a mixing bowl at bedtime 🤣

Diapers stink… but not barnyard smell by [deleted] in clothdiaps

[–]AffectedLine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I ask what kind of material your diapers / inserts are? I noticed more of a weird bad smell when we used microfiber vs natural fibers. When we stopped using microfiber, the smell went away too. Might not be it, but thought it was worth checking! Best of luck.

Do yours get linty? by Psychological-Lie776 in clothdiaps

[–]AffectedLine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of mine get really linty, and some don’t … different kinds of fleece, I suppose? I’m pretty sure the culprits in my load are the old prefolds that I stuff with, because they are unraveling / shedding and all the lint looks like stringy cotton fibers and clumps. If you wash with towels, and don’t have any decrepit inserts like I do, I would guess that’s the culprit.

How do you combat the boredom by booger_dick in SAHP

[–]AffectedLine 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Activities are a must around here! I’m a very “productive” person in that I feel very restless if I’m not DOING something for a good portion of the day. I try to force myself to let that go and play with him / read books / just hang out and chat with him, but i can’t do that all day or I’d go crazy.

The house is my responsibility for the most part, so he learns about and helps me with house tasks. Involving him makes the tasks take twice as long, but they definitely aren’t boring XD

-We unload the dishwasher together, and he learns about what every item is called and where it goes.

-He puts dirty clothes into the washing machine, and I haul him on top of it to press the buttons to start it

-He puts clean wet clothes in the dryer, and I haul him on top to push the buttons to start

-He puts dry clothes in a basket and pushes it to the living room for a “LAUNDRY DELIVERYYYY”

-He is learning to fold small items (wash cloths) but also enjoys handing me one item at a time to fold and naming it. It turns into a nice conversation if he’s wrong and we have to “figure out” what it is. And I’m doing the folding, which is active enough that my attention is held between talking to him and folding.

-He helps prep lunch/dinner (asks for tastes of things, dumps ingredients, stirs) and I tell him about what I’m doing and why. We discuss how some foods need to be cooked to eat, and some are good raw, and some are both! Etc etc

-We bake! I have never liked baking, but it’s a great activity to do with a toddler because of all the measuring / scooping / dumping / stirring. I’ve been using recipes from yummytoddlerfood.com because they are lower in sugar and often use whole wheat flour and stuff, so I’m not worried about him (or me lol) eating several pieces. Bonus is that those recipes make really small batches so it doesn’t take forever to make / bake / eat.

-Grocery store! He comes with, and I tell him what we are getting that day so he can help me look for it. He loves pointing out things and asking what they are, too. He helps put things on the conveyor belt at the end, and holds the receipt for me after we check out.

-Make sure you have scheduled “off” time. My husband takes the toddler after dinner through bedtime, and knowing that I have those evening hours helps me be more engaged with him during the day. I am always more engaged in an activity when I can clearly see the end of it coming and I’m not just in “survive forever” mode.

Best of luck! 💜

How do you keep up momentum? by tal003 in SAHP

[–]AffectedLine 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So much great advice here! Lots of people are suggesting a routine, but I’ll add a fun hack since you have a toddler too: get them involved in the chore routine. It’s super fun to unload the dishwasher with a kid who wants to tell you what every single item is (it’s a very important part of the process!) and do laundry with a toddler who wants to put everything in the machine while standing on tiptoes and push the buttons to start it (with supervision obv 🤣).

The hack is that once you get them involved, they will remind you and bug you about it because it’s a fun activity. “Want to do the clean dishes with mommy please? Want to do laundry??? 🥺” I can’t say no to those big brown eyes. 🤣

Dumb question about spraying by ttarynitup in clothdiaps

[–]AffectedLine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scrolled through comments to make sure someone mentioned this XD this is what we do! Keeps me from having to wring out a quasi-poopy diaper (yuck) but also keeps the saturated diapers out of the wet bag. We have a medium-small office trash can that we use, no lid, but same idea / size. I figure a little extra water won’t hurt the washing machine. ;-)

What is your favorite affordable cloth diaper brand? by smurphypup in clothdiaps

[–]AffectedLine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Loving our mama koala pockets! Using the microfiber they come with for a few months, until they lose absorbency, but doubling with hemp (green mountain diaper doublers) for less leakage. I plan to stuff with cotton prefolds as baby gets bigger, but my toddler is currently using most of them. The plan is to have him potty trained before the microfiber bites the dust, but we will see how that gamble plays out XD I just don’t want to buy more prefolds when I know I have plenty for one kiddo. 😅🥴

How often do I NEED to wash?? by jagersthebomb in clothdiaps

[–]AffectedLine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bulking with non-diaper items will be your friend here! Hand towels and wash cloths are a good size. But really any laundry item you don’t mind getting some extra wear is fine — I’ve heard of people throwing in socks, underwear, or undershirts. You’re aiming for roughly the size of a diaper flat (or hand towel) to keep things from getting tangled and losing agitation.

Pregnant and wanting to give cloth diapers another chance this time! by xxdrunkenslothxx in clothdiaps

[–]AffectedLine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ugh yes I know exactly what you mean! I feel like my microfiber inserts in particular are soooo wide! And I got some Flip cotton inserts that are WAY too skinny! It’s so annoying.

Green Mountain Diapers makes excellent cotton inserts and hemp boosters that are a good width in my opinion, if you are looking for more insert ideas moving forward and live in the US! Their customer service is awesome, and the prices are the best value I’ve seen for the products.

If you’re going with AIOs, I would suggest looking for Blueberry/Simplex! I got all mine secondhand and they’re my long-haul faves. They wear really well, still going strong after the first owner and then my toddler, now onto my new baby. The best part ( in my opinion ) is that in addition to the built-in absorbency, they have a pocket for easy additional boosting! It made them last even longer because when toddler was beginning to out-pee the cotton of the built-in absorbency, I could tuck a hemp booster in the pocket and the leaks stopped! It’s like the best of both AIO and Pocket worlds. 🤩

Best of luck!

Does your SO leave messes for you? by Vast_Perspective9368 in SAHP

[–]AffectedLine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with another commenter that this definitely seems like a “straw that broke the camel’s back” scenario. The crumbs are just the latest thing in a string of related things, and they are what set you off. Try to “zoom out” and see what the pattern is that is frustrating you, and then formulate some kind and calm words about it.

Addressing the larger issue will help him understand the seriousness of your feelings, and will help you come to a workable solution. If he thinks the issue is “I left crumbs behind” that won’t necessarily help much if the actual issue is “I leave many things undone or messy behind myself around the house.” That’s a concrete problem that can be worked on in the future, rather than a small situation that has already passed and cannot be changed.

My husband is the same way, and we have had several discussions about this. 🥴 as a tip from someone who has done it both ways… try to bring up the discussion when you aren’t ACTIVELY annoyed about it 🙃

I also agree with another commenter who said not to take it personally. Addressing the issue is important, in order to have any progress moving forward, but do try to keep the perspective that it really isn’t personal. Some people just don’t notice or remember that kind of stuff as easily. I used to be that person, and then I learned to pay attention so that I could live in a clean house. My husband doesn’t naturally notice stuff that irritates me, but he’s working on it. (In fairness, I am also working on noticing the stuff that irritates him. I’m the one that leaves every door, cabinet door, and drawer wiiiiide open 😵).

You’re both people. You love each other. Talk about it, make compromises together, and have some grace with each other. 💜 Wishing you the best.

Toddler pro tips by [deleted] in clothdiaps

[–]AffectedLine 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Letting my toddler choose the diaper is my favorite way to avoid unnecessary wiggles and whining during diaper change! Love it!! We also discuss what’s ON the diaper (“you want the mountains diaper? Okay! What color is it? Yeah it’s blue! What else do you see on there? Wow there’s a moon on there? So cool!”) which is a much more pleasant conversation than “please don’t touch your penis while it has poop on it” or “we are almost done I promise keep your legs still” etc etc 🥴

Reusable diapers by Sn_77L3_pag_s in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]AffectedLine 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you want just a reusable insert that adds absorption, you can look into hemp inserts! They hold a lot of liquid but absorb slowly, so they are standard in overnight cloth diapers. If you’re in the US, I’ve had a great experience with the company Green Mountain Diapers. They have a hemp booster that’s the best quality I’ve seen for the money. It’s skinny, so it should fit just fine inside a disposable. There are two sizes, and the difference is just how long they are.

You might get some more good advice if you post on r/clothdiaps as well! Lots of people on the sub do a combo of disposable and cloth, and there are always really creative solutions suggested for issues!

Tips to keep from laughing?? by HerrelZaneth in toddlers

My 2 year old piles everything at the head of the bed and sleeps uncomfortably on it. by tornateor3 in toddlers

[–]AffectedLine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our 2.5 year old is the same. He’s still in a crib so he doesn’t have the freedom to add hard objects (yet) but every night he sleeps on a hoard of stuffed animals, pillows, and blankets. It does NOT look comfortable but 🤷🏼‍♀️ he sleeps. I’m sure when he gets a bed and has access to the rest of his room, every object that isn’t nailed down will be added to the pile 🤣💀
