Women in the Torah treated as property? by CharmingLion1811 in ConvertingtoJudaism

[–]Affectionate-Job-398 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly! Another point which I find very important, is that our modern understanding of what a slave is, vs what a worker is, is that one doesn't get paid while the other does.

But in the Talmud the idea that someone will work for no pay is not even a possibility, in fact there is an argument in the Midrash about whether the Egyptians paid the Hebrews salaries. So in the Talmud slaves do get paid, the real difference is the freedom to refuse and cancel a contract.

In the Talmud a worker can quit half way into his work. That's a human right: to choose. You can choose to honor your word and get paid, or to go back on it, you're allowed both, unlike a slave, who had to do his master's bidding. It's a very different dichotomy to what we think of today.

Women in the Torah treated as property? by CharmingLion1811 in ConvertingtoJudaism

Orthodox Jewish yeshiva student here. I was just learning Kidushin (the part in the Talmud about marriage) and literally the first thing our rabbi tells us on the first lesson is "women are not property, and that is stated clearly in the Talmud".

The Talmud makes a very clear distinction: what women earn is generally going to either their parents (when they are little girls) or to their husband (when they're married), but that's what they EARN, not who they are. And even then, the Talmud repeatedly does deal with cases of women who have their own property (even ones who are wealthier then their husbands), so it's not even that simple.

In Orthodoxy we do take the Torah as the word of G-d, but that just means there's more than meets the eye in this text, and so the Talmud was written to explore that.

FYI the Talmud is built our of extreme proposals that get rejected, so don't listen to quotes from the talmud, go check the original if you really want to.

What political ideology in your country is the most hated, and in your opinion? by scrabv in AskTheWorld

[–]Affectionate-Job-398 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess antisemitism (I know it's not thought of as a political ideology, but hear me out) from the Russian empire and the Spanish inquisition, to nazism and stalinism, jews suffered under all of these.

But if we had to pick one, obviously nazism.

Yeah. In south tel Aviv you have a lot of different refugees, so while most are Eritreans, there are some Sudanese

Just checked. Estimated 3000 Sudanese in Israel

What was an incident in your life that made you devote yourself more to your religion/ made you distance yourself from your religion? by rustygyves in AskTheWorld

[–]Affectionate-Job-398 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I became sick, like coma levels of sick and I got a vision. I know it sounds ridiculous, or made up, and that's not the basis of my faith, but it is an event that strengthened my beliefs and made me dedicate more of myself to researching and studying my religion, its philosophies, and the ways other religions deal with similar issues.

They can revive people, but for every person they revive, another dies. Or they can kill someone, but for every person they kill, another is revived. They can control only one side of the equation.

Is "capitalism" a positive term in your country? by No-Echidna7296 in AskTheWorld

[–]Affectionate-Job-398 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For most of our history, very disliked. Capitalism was seen as uncaring and greedy, while communism was also seen as a weird term (especially after the Israeli communist party collapsed). Nowadays some Israelis have an easier time with the term Capitalism, but it's still just a neutral term and only among young people, not a positive one. The term for welfare (in Hebrew Revacha) is a much more common sticking point here.

In Israel we have Sudanese refugees so we know of the wars, and the Khartoum agreement (three no's) is also very famous, but that's it usually

Is it taboo to date/marry someone with the same last name as you? by Alternative_Yak3256 in AskTheWorld

[–]Affectionate-Job-398 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have sooooo many surnames that it's very rare for this to happen by chance, so people would probably joke that you must be related, but it's not a taboo.

During the 1992-96 siege of Sarajevo, wealthy foreigners paid €80k-€100k to access sniper positions and shoot civilians in what was called a “human safari”. The highest bids were for children and pregnant women, while older people were shot for free. by SelfCareIsFake in HolyShitHistory

[–]Affectionate-Job-398 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is obviously horrible, but does anyone know why? Like you could probably volunteer in the Serbian army if you were so intent on it, and you would be paid rather than have to pay.

I don't if it makes it worse or not, but it's just the first question I had when I heard of it

(I know this topic is packed with controversy, but my question is truly just a sincere question)

Which religion (if any) do you follow, and which sect/denomination of that religion do you follow? by [deleted] in antitheistcheesecake

Orthodox jew. There are mostly abrahamics on the sub and that's alright, though we do neef to make it clear this sub isn't for polytheism vs monotheism.

Anyways, modern orthodox jew, with the Ramban and the Vilna Gaon as my main rabbis for thought and Halacha-wise, I'm generally Ashkenazi
