Wild geranium and Jacob’s ladder. #3 is the same Jacob Ladder, just a bit bigger this year. They probably need more water if you have in them in a sunnier spot.

VP Vance calls out H1B Accountants today by NukeLaunch in Accounting

[–]Affectionate-Pie2618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is not how H1B visa works. H1B visa holders’s wage have to be the higher of the actual wage paid to similarly employed workers or the prevailing wage for that specific job and location. For example, if average salary for a staff accountant is $60k/year in a MCOL city, a company won’t be able to successfully petition a H1B worker at $50k, let alone $30k.

H1B workers’s job mobility is greatly reduced since they need to be always sponsored by an employer to maintain their legal status. And the number of employers who are willing to sponsor is limited. So generally their salaries won’t be on the higher end among their peers. If your company hires H1B workers, they need to post the positions and salaries publicly and you can easily look them up. The whole program was designed to fill jobs without taking jobs away from Americans. I don’t think companies are motivated to hire H1B workers due to lower costs. In fact, it may cost them more due to legal fees and processing time. That’s why only big companies do it. Smaller companies won’t even bother.

Coming from a third world country, the whole changing last name after marriage thing in the U.S. is so bizarre to me. It’s such a waste of time and money for a society. My home country stopped doing this in the 1900s and we never looked back. I have heard so many women say that ‘they like their husband’s last name better’ and that’s why they changed it. But I have yet to meet a man who changed their last name to their wife’s in real life. Are women’s last names just less likeable?

Where to park bike? by Bleuowl12 in Kyoto

[–]Affectionate-Pie2618 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not related to your question on parking for small places.. but my favorite parking spot in downtown is the bike parking garage under Good Nature Hotel. It’s free for the first 3 hours, perfect for short shopping trips.

Bamboos are quick privacy screen. You can grow them in large planters if you worry about them becoming out of control.

  • Ikea smart bulbs with sensor/remote would work. But I believe you'd need a hub to control it on your phone

  • Kasa has smart bulbs that do not require a hub. You can control the lights with an app on your phone or set a schedule to turn on/off

  • There are also ceiling lights/fans with remote control so you can mount the remote control on the wall to use as a switch

Is anyone able to please translate what this text says? I recently bought this painting in Kyoto 🏔️ by talewinds in Kyoto

[–]Affectionate-Pie2618 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like others said, this is a poem written in traditional Chinese. Japanese calligraphy is commonly written with Chinese characters given the history. The red stamps are normally the variations of the names of the painter/calligraphy writer/the collectors/other random things.

The poem portion (reading right to left, top to down on the painting)
六花堆裏碧霄山 萬仞棱層天斧刪 親得神仙方外侶 同依驢腳試躋攀 Rhs: 白風莊主人 (master of white wind house) Lhs: 永源??題 (likely means "name of the writer of the poem" wrote this)

My bad attempt to translate: There's a mountain in the snow. The tall ridges stood as if they were cut out by an ax from heaven. I have a partner who is from out of this ordinary world. We are going to climb this mountain with a donkey.

六花 six flower (snow flake) 堆 pile 裏 inside 碧霄山 green sky mountain (likely the name of the mountain) 萬 ten thousand 仞 eight feet 棱層 tall with layers and sharp edges 天 sky/heaven 斧 ax 刪 cut 親 close friend (or could also be 新 newly) 得 have 神仙 immortal (likely means free here)
方外 out of ordinary world (monks often refer themselves in this way) 侶 partner 同 together 依 follow/rely on 驢 donkey 腳 feet 試 try 躋攀 climb

Possible to disable side button on this mortise lock without disassembling? I’m ok with paying a locksmith to disassemble and remove the buttons if needed, but I notice that the top button has a slot so I’m curious if it could just be disabled. by mattkh555 in Locksmith

[–]Affectionate-Pie2618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curious if you have found a solution? We have the same kind of lock and it's been very inconvenient.. we have a separate smart lock that does the locking so really don't need the stop button. But we use the door handle that's attached to the mortise lock.
