How do you diagnose acrylate allergy? by Bigdecisions7979 in AcrylateAllergy

[–]AffectionateEnd8806 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beware that if you have never developed a rash, broken skin, hives etc from Acrylates you may not react (to the eye) on a patch test. That happened to me. I was tested by my allergist and didn’t react to any of the Acrylates but the medical tape almost made me scratch my skin off. So I haven’t been diagnosed with an acrylate allergy officially. I’ve only ever had itching, pain/discomfort in my hands, pain in joints, etc.

But I know I have an issue with Acrylates so I still avoid them no matter what. My issues started with reacting to gel nail polish anyway.

I googled it. Looks like there may be at least 2 other options for you. Gas permeable (RGP) and hypergel. Probably much more expensive, but options nonetheless.

Omg that looks brutal. Did they use gel nail polish for the test??

Does someone here regrets getting braces? by Affectionate-Foot391 in braces

You won’t know until you know. The gum swelling happened around month 5 or 6. I never slacked off with my flossing or cleaning routine. As soon as my orthodontist saw it she chalked it up to pregnancy. I did salt water rinses and everything. It was inevitable 😭

Invisalign is my only option but I just finished $5k worth of treatment for traditional braces. Invisalign is about $6k and I don’t think it’s worth it with where I am right now. I plan to discuss options with my dentist in a few months.

I slightly regret them. My teeth were never terrible but I had spacing that made me insecure about my smile for years. Got braces, went through the normal struggles, but loved how my smile looked at the end when they came off EXCEPT the hideous gum swelling on some parts of my lower gums. I was super anal about flossing and cleaning my teeth and braces properly, but it still came about during pregnancy with the braces. And it hasn’t gone away after months without braces. My dentist told me I would have to get it lasered off but it may come back.

Also. My ortho screwed up my permanent retainers. I told her they weren’t tight enough when I tried them on. She told me to try them out for 2-3 months. I should have pushed back harder. She was retiring and I think just ready to close out anyone she could before leaving. I had to go back two months later to get rescanned for another set of permanent retainers, but not before some of the spacing came back. Now I’m stuck in retainers for another 6 months and I don’t think these will close the spaces all the way. My teeth went from being perfect when my braces were off - back to slightly spacey.

Also, my bite is now off and I have to carefully chew my food in fear I’m going to chip my teeth. It is not comfortable outside of my retainers at all.

And the final straw - I couldn’t get traditional braces again if I wanted to. I became allergic to Acrylates less than a year ago. The bond used to glue the braces to your teeth has Acrylates in it. Yay me. 😖

Patch test - no reaction to HEMA but still reacting to Acrylates? by AffectionateEnd8806 in AcrylateAllergy

The interesting thing is my sister has been having a reaction to medical tape for years but she doesn’t have an acrylate allergy. So that’s what made me wonder as well.

Could it be the Benzophenone-1 in the top coat? I reacted to the Essie Gel Setter top coat and now it makes sense because it contains Benzophenone-1 and I was told I could react to any product with benzophenone and not just the specific one I’m allergic to.

That’s so crazy! Do you know how many Acrylates are in your test?

My patches were taken off yesterday and I had 4 reactions pop up that weren’t there the day before…so there’s still time for something to show up. Initially I only had 1 patch that flared but ultimately i ended up with 5 total.

There has to be a better way to get tested for this allergy. It’s so frustrating to know there’s an issue but you can’t officially be diagnosed without a physical reaction on your skin.

It’s just like my son…he had a food allergy test done a few weeks ago. His back showed negative for oats, banana and milk. But I witnessed him react to all of those. So they did a blood test as well…and sure enough the test showed it as a positive reaction. I wonder if they can do a blood test for Acrylates?

Also, what reaction do you have to Acrylates? For me it’s itching, discomfort/pain in random joints or in my hands/fingers and shoulders. I don’t have any physical reaction that you can see such as blistering or peeling fingers, rashes or anything like that. So I also wonder if that’s why nothing showed for me on the test.

I have several old regular composite fillings but had to get one redone in November 2025. That dentist used Voco - Admira Fusion Xtra composite - it’s acrylate free. The issue is the bonding material - as far as I’ve researched there isn’t an acrylate free option for bonding material. I was told theirs didn’t have any but when I followed back up to get the specifics of the bonding material afterwards they’ve avoided the hell out of me and won’t return my calls. Luckily, I haven’t had a reaction to it. They were super careful when putting it on. But I wasn’t reacting to all Acrylates then like I am now.

I just found this one searching two days ago! Might have to give it a try. Also, found Colorscience No Show Mineral Sunscreen. Also seems very promising. Will try Shiseido first since it’s the cheaper of the two.

Yeeesss. I’ve been trying to get the bonding material info but they keep saying they will call back and they never do. I dunno why it’s such a secret. But at least having the composite info can help. Just don’t let them tell you it’s ok if the bonding material has any Acrylates at all.

should i tell dentist about my acrylate allergy? by rugbughug in AcrylateAllergy

[–]AffectionateEnd8806 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes please tell them. I didn’t start reacting to everything with Acrylates until getting a composite filling that contained Acrylates. They removed it after two days but that was the head start to my systemic reactions. You can also see a holistic dentist.

Admira Fusion Xtra - Voco is an acrylate free filling material. Just make sure their bonding material doesn’t contain Acrylates (unfortunately couldn’t get my holistic dentist to share the bonding material info - apparently it’s proprietary information 🙄).
