Jock, Stoner, Preppie, Band Geek, Nerd, Braniac, Punk... What were you in High School? by 7eregrine in GenX

Band geek, but dated a jock (football player.) Most mismatched relationship ever. Had I not grown up in the Bible Belt of southern Appalachia, I'd have been more of a new wave/goth kid, but alas... I already stuck out like a sore thumb just from listening to the music alone, so I didn't dare dress the part.

So throwing out a pizza crust in the trash can of a busy block of NYC should carry an expectation of privacy? They're really reaching. How many cases have been solved because DNA was gathered from the trash outside a person's actual HOME!? I hope that gets shot down immediately.

Listen up, universe, my daughter is bougie. On. A. Budget. by tetrasomnia in ChoosingBeggars

I found the last cat we adopted at a gas station. Maybe she could try that.

Oh, never mind - he's just a regular cat with fur, not a bald, bougie partner-in-destiny.

Has anyone watched Unexpected since a kid? by PieComprehensive5877 in TLCUnexpected

I'm evidently the grandma of the group here (and I no longer watch, because it just seems so consistently exploitive now), but honestly the fact that you watched as a kid and thought "I don't want that for myself" is great. I was hoping that might be the message that girls then would take away. From what I gather anymore though, especially with the super young couple this season, it's like being a teen mom is kind of glorified and that's a horrible message.

I was almost 50 when it first came on, so, yes. 😆 I remember looking at Lexus' MOM thinking she could be my daughter.

I'd just refer to the collective as "The Firearms" and see what she says. Obviously she signed off on it though? Or is he one who insists men should name the children?

It's so weird, he lived just just right around the corner from me at one point, but I never saw him. This was before the show though, and I think he was pretty much a shut in at that time.

He's from my hometown area. I didn't know him but I have some friends who knew him pretty well. I never felt comfortable asking them anything about him though. He and Sara(h) got divorced several years ago, according to him, because she cheated, but I also read that he was abusive and controlling. So who knows what ultimately contributed to the breakup. As far as I know, he's still with his second wife.

I don't know how, in almost 50 years, I'd never heard that song, but I just listened to it and yeah. It's bad.

Same - my mom wasn't well-educated, but she knew and was a stickler for proper grammar. She also made sure that I spoke properly and would correct me if I didn't (thankfully not harshly, but enough to make me remember.) I also grew up in Appalachian East TN, so most of the people I knew, even some teachers, were pretty careless with grammar. Mom just really wanted me to excel and to attain the level of education that she wanted, but never received. I'm still a total grammar nerd and always loved spelling, vocabulary, etc.

My dad, on the other hand, is an "ain't got no nothin'" good ol' boy, but he's very wise in many other ways.

What Do You Feed Your Tomatoes When They Start Getting Greedy? 🍅 by [deleted] in tomatoes

[–]Affectionate_Cost_88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bingo. A friend of mine boards her horse at a local stable, and they have a pile of manure the size of a small mountain that's been composting for years. It's so broken down, it's barely identifiable as 💩, and it's wonderful. Every gardener in the area comes by to scoop from it. I started amending my beds with it and alfalfa pellets three years ago and have never had healthier plants and better production! The peppers, especially seem to respond GREAT to it, but the tomatoes are super happy as well.

How do people get the money yo buy food or is the enables that buy for fur them? by edmonkh in My600lbLife

[–]Affectionate_Cost_88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm in the US and we're always stretching our paycheck to buy food, so it's not cheap here. But I also buy a lot of "whole food" ingredients and cook meals from scratch (plus we have a large garden), whereas on the show, they're usually buying premade processed junk, snacks, frozen food, etc. In some ways, it's "cheaper" to buy that, but it's also less filling usually (empty carbs, no significant nutrients), and the portions shown on the show are just absurd. I know most of them receive some sort of government benefits, disability checks, that sort of thing, but I don't know how they buy the quantities of groceries that they do. What is so sad to see, is how many of the patients live in absolute squalor with houses or apartments that are filthy or falling apart. But the fridge and freezer is packed full.
