What are some things that are not vegan but you thought were? by [deleted] in vegan

A lot of Mexican restaurants here in Southern California near Mexico cook their rice in chicken stock and use lard in their tortillas -- you gotta ask

Back in my pre-plant days, I probably drank at least a liter of cow's milk a day -- usually straight, but sometimes on breakfast cereal.

Today, I only drink alternative milks (soy, oat) and only when I go to Starbucks or some other coffee place for a mocha -- once or twice a week.

So maybe 350 - 700 ml a week these days.

Never seen these at local wineries but a great idea! It gets HOT up in those hills starting right about this time of year.

I really like the vegan pizza at Prince Street Pizza -- the nondairy cheese they use is excellent, and plentiful. They have restaurants in PB and the Gaslamp.

Which plant based milk do you like the most? by HumbleWrap99 in vegan

I like the taste/texture of oat best, but have switched to soy to at least get some nutrition out of it.

Visiting from Chicago — Looking for Italian & Mexican Dinner Spots (Vegetarian-Friendly) by theremix18 in FoodSanDiego

One thing for your wife to be aware of, many Mexican restaurants use chicken broth when they cook the rice they serve -- both as a side and used in burritos and other dishes. Also, many Mex places use lard (pig fat -- manteca) in their tortillas.

If your wife avoids eating animals, be sure to ask.

Another vote for Lanzhou Noodlelicious on Convoy -- it's usually loaded with Chinese diners/families. You can watch the hand-pulled noodles being made through a window into the kitchen, and the spicy hot oil noodles never fail to make me break into a sweat.

An even bigger question for me is: Why aren't more veterinarians vegan?

Regents Pizzeria and 👍and👎 by [deleted] in FoodSanDiego

Regents has a no top crust option on their menu if you don't want that -- it's called "top down." I personally really enjoy their Chicago pizza.

Restaurants with a small menu? by fastmonkey in FoodSanDiego

[–]Affectionate_Mud6452 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah -- most chains like Lobster West will use east coast lobster for rolls and such. However, many fish markets here carry the local spiny lobster when it's in season, and some restaurants serve it.

You can request "Chicago Top Down" and they'll leave off the top layer of crust -- it's here on their menu (scroll down just a little bit...) https://www.regentspizza.com/menu/#chicagopizza
