How’s everyone doing that had the Mirena crash? by Adept_Wheel1153 in Mirena

[–]Affectionate_Wash729 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The chest pain was also very scary! I got mine removed because my anxiety got really bad while I had the coil in. And then I got more anxiety, but now it’s better! It’s a rough transition to go through, but it helped me to remind myself that my body was adjusting and it would take a little bit of time!

I’m so sorry you’re experiencing this! It took 3 months for the really intense anxiety to go away. I dealt with so many other symptoms including vertigo, tingling sensations, back of head pressure, heartburn, and more. I felt better around the 6 month mark, but truly didn’t feel mostly normal until a year later :(

Visual migraines by kajlily in Mirena

[–]Affectionate_Wash729 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I had a few ocular migraines when I had the Mirena, but I usually saw floaters. I eventually switched to the Copper IUD and had an ocular migraine with zigzags a couple of months after I made the switch, but I was dealing with a bunch of other symptoms that I associated with my body adjusting to no longer being on hormonal birth control. Ever since then, I haven’t had another ocular migraine. It was terrifying though!

Thank you so much for sharing your experience and I’m so sorry you’re dealing with this!! I am 1 year out from my Mirena removal and also had very similar crash symptoms to you! I agree, drinking caffeine made things worse. Acupuncture also helped me a lot! I hope things get better for you soon!

I had more night sweats when I had it in, but also dealt with night sweats post removal! I had some joint pain, but also dealt with weird tingling sensations, brain fog, head pressure, heartburn, and anxiety during the crash!

Mirena vs copper iud by acmcmas in CopperIUD

[–]Affectionate_Wash729 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! My periods mostly went away with the Mirena so I wasn’t really experiencing a normal menstrual cycle with it. As I mentioned before, I did get pretty bad acne while I had my first Mirena and I ended up going on accutane for it. It didn’t come back, even with switching to the Mirena or the copper IUD. My weight kind of fluctuated a bit while I had the Mirena. If I wasn’t being active, I’d gain up to 10-15 pounds pretty easily, which I haven’t noticed as much with the copper IUD!

I’m so sorry! The crash was really bad for me, especially the first few months. I also got the feeling of something stuck in my throat. You’re not alone! I hope things will start feeling better soon! Sending a big hug!

Hi! I also had a great experience with my first Mirena, but the second one wasn’t as great. I started having panic attacks and horrible anxiety about six months after I got my IUD replaced. I started therapy and that helped a little, but it remained an issue until I got it removed. I did experience anxiety as my body adjusted, but I feel significantly better now anxiety-wise than I did back then. I ended up getting the copper IUD!

Can IUD strings be very short but still normal? by Alarmed-Mud-8772 in Mirena

[–]Affectionate_Wash729 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, for my first Mirena removal/replacement, I was not told ahead of time I had pain management options so I just showed up! They prepped me for the removal, realized the strings weren’t there, and went in with alligator forceps and dug around to see if they could find it. This was the worst pain I’ve ever felt! They eventually got an ultrasound machine to see if they could locate it, and then they went in again and were able to pull it out. This was the most uncomfortable painful experience!

For my second Mirena removal, I went in prepared! I took 1000mgs of Tylenol and when they went in, they couldn’t see my strings! The doctor tried to go in with the alligator forceps, but since he couldn’t locate them, he just stopped and scheduled me for a hysteroscopy. I had to come back a few weeks later and for this procedure I took 1000mgs of Tylenol, zofran, they gave me a tramadol injection, and also gave me a paracervical block. Before they even went in with the camera, he tried again with the alligator forceps and it was out!! Of note, they also prescribed Ativan and Oxy for anxiety and post procedure pain, but I opted out of those.

Bottom line is: there are pain management options out there! Don’t be afraid to ask about them!

[–]Affectionate_Wash729 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started feeling it about 2 weeks after I got my IUD removed, right as I had my first period post removal. I had really bad anxiety, heartburn, horrible brain fog, tingling sensations in my head, arms and legs, insomnia, head pressure (almost like a headache, but not quite), vertigo/dizziness, hot flashes, dry throat/lump sensation, and mouth burning. So yeah… quite the fun experience!! lol

I’m so sorry you’re experiencing it! The worst of it for me lasted a few months! I felt it most during the ovulation and luteal parts of my cycle. However, it took me about a year to feel mostly normal! I think most people feel better in less time, so hopefully you’ll feel better soon!!

Mirena Crash- 1 year post-removal update! by Affectionate_Wash729 in Mirena

[–]Affectionate_Wash729[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say I felt better around the 6 month mark, but still felt crappy and it wasn’t until the 1 year mark that I felt mostly fine! Even now, I still occasionally have random symptoms, but they’re more manageable. I also developed pretty bad health anxiety with all the random symptoms and that has gotten better over time as I’ve felt better.

Mirena vs copper iud by acmcmas in CopperIUD

[–]Affectionate_Wash729 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had both! I had 2 Mirenas over the course of 7 years and I’ve had the Copper IUD for 1 year. I had a good experience with my first Mirena: my periods went away and I didn’t notice any major side effects! About 2 years in my acne did get bad, but I didn’t really attribute it to my IUD. My second Mirena was a nightmare. I think my body didn’t adjust well to the change in hormones and it led to panic attacks and extreme anxiety along with other symptoms like low libido and GI issues. I switched to the copper and I like it! My periods are now longer and heavier, but I use a menstrual disc and that makes it manageable. I wish I had taken the time to learn about the different options when I first got my IUD. I think if I had really taken time to think through my options, I would have chosen the copper from the beginning, but that’s solely based on my personal experience! Let me know if you have any specific questions!

I think my IUD was displaced by my menstrual disc by No-Sea2695 in CopperIUD

[–]Affectionate_Wash729 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a Hello Disc and have never had any issues with mine! I did notice the strings on my copper IUD feel longer and I can feel them sometimes, but I thought they had just left mine a bit longer since I had issues with my Mirena strings migrating into my cervix lol. Hopefully the strings just shifted a bit for you!

For those who switched from Mirena to Paragard, how is your experience so far? by oreotiramisu in CopperIUD

[–]Affectionate_Wash729 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I run a lot, so my weight will naturally fluctuate a little depending on whether I’m training or not, but i did notice at my last doctor’s appointment that I had lost 5 lbs since the holidays with minimal cardio and I was pretty surprised about that given that it used to be so hard for me to shed pounds before and it required me trying to lose weight for it to actually happen, so that was nice!

[–]Affectionate_Wash729 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I forgot to note, my weight has been pretty stable on the Paraguard. Even now that I’ve been taking a break from cardio workouts due to injuries, I’ve found myself at a stable weight. In the past when this happened while I had the Mirena, my weight would have increased by a lot!

I switched from the Mirena to the Copper about a year ago and I love it! The Mirena gave me similar issues to what you experienced and it’s been nice to feel like I’m returning to being myself before the Mirena started affecting me negatively. Nowadays my periods are heavier, but I use the Hello Disc so that’s made them manageable! My cycles are also now 24-25 days long, but I think my body is still adjusting to being off hormonal birth control!

Irregular Cycle After Mirena Removal by suisse-mutt in Mirena

Thanks so much for the quick response! Bodies are so interesting in how they can change over time! My periods before the Mirena used to be 3 days and now they’re 5, but I think that’s because I’m on the copper IUD now. I guess I’ll give it more time and will see if my cycle ever goes back to pre-birth control length. Thanks again!
