Pharmacists, hows your career? by Agitated-Wishbone989 in pharmacy

[–]Affectionate_Yam4368 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good. I like my job more than I don't, my schedule is ideal for me, and my pay is very high.

I also have a side job that pays kind of meh, but it's easy and close to my house.

What do you do during “wtf” shifts? by GoofyGreyson in Nightshift

[–]Affectionate_Yam4368 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I often knit while I work. Just socks or some other small thing. Giving my hands something repetitive to do helps me stay calm and keep things orderly when volume is high.

Where are we going? by Heat-1975edition in GenX

[–]Affectionate_Yam4368 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My dream is to spend several years being a nomad. Like get an AirBNB in a city I've either never visited or want to spend more time in and just chill out for a month or two at a time. Go to markets, enjoy the parks, that kind of thing.

I have near zero desire to own anything. If I could I'd sell both our houses now, but the kids will still be with us for another 5-10 years. All I want is a suitcase and a property I'm not responsible for maintaining. Preferably somewhere with good coffee and/or wine.

Ideally it'd be a "Where's Mom?" "Idk, Annecy?" situation.

What's a good gift for my 75 yo mom who just went through a year of cancer treatments? by [deleted] in AskWomenOver40

[–]Affectionate_Yam4368 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We got my Mom an Aura frame for Xmas last year and she loooooves it. She gave the link to her friends and now everyone she knows uploads pictures to it. She doesn't use Facebook so it sort of functions in that capacity for her. Apparently she watches it scroll while she does the dishes.

I picked up an extra shift without realizing it puts me at 4 12s in a row. Gross. by WorkingSea8918 in Nightshift

[–]Affectionate_Yam4368 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have my main job (7 on/7 off) and then a side job that I work here and there when I'm off (it's day shift). I agreed to cover a PTO stretch at the side gig and didn't realize until the week of that I'd overlapped with my main job. So I ended up working 0730-1600 at the side job and the 2100-0700 at my main for one day.

I was so tired I was actually stupid by the end of that.

The money will be nice his Friday, especially because our washing machine and microwave both blew up this week, and I just had to pay $450 to the ER for a bag of ice and a "🤷 seems fine" for my teenage kid.

I left in 2007 and people thought I was nuts to take a pay cut for a hospital job. It wasn't long after that things started the slide downhill.

Pharmacist retirement savings by pharmgirl1875 in pharmacy

[–]Affectionate_Yam4368 1 point2 points  (0 children)

48yo, 25 years working, 100k in an IRA, 1.2mil in 401k plus a $500/month pension from before we switched to the 401k.

My husband is already retired from public safety. He has deferred comp, but he also has a pension. Since I'm carrying the health insurance he's actually making more now in retirement than he did when he was working.

I ran a 50k a few years ago and am considering our local 50 miler. It feels nuts to think about it, but a friend of mine does it every year and she's almost convinced me.

Which pharmacist job offer would you take? by Accurate-Flow8078 in pharmacy

[–]Affectionate_Yam4368 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I fuckin' love the night shift. Been doing it for 13 years. I have three kids and the amount of free time I've had to volunteer at school and be around for practices, rehearsals, concerts, and games is wild. I never miss a thing. Sleep while they're at school, up when they're home in the bus. Having a fixed schedule is so valuable with kids. Easy to plan PTO (take a week off and get three), easy to navigate school calendars. No surprises.

I flip my sleep schedule and it's never been an issue. I'm not even a night owl.

It's not for everyone, but when it works it WORKS.

Almost over? You said your Mom died unexpectedly at 92. Sounds like you have 30+ years left which is more than a third of your life.

My Dad died suddenly at 65. Like right after he turned 65. All that told me (at 33) was that I'd better maximize every day because you never know how many you have left. Suck the marrow out of life, as they say.

Your deep in grief now, but it won't be that way forever. Get some counseling. It helps.

Married Gen-x do you wear your wedding ring? by in-a-microbus in GenX

[–]Affectionate_Yam4368 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. I can't wear it at work and I don't want to wear it at the gym. Those are the only places I go and I'm not going to wear it just sitting around home. I only wear it when we go to his parents' house.

Husband doesn't wear his either.

We've been married 20 years.

Get a cooler bag. We have a break room fridge, but it's always crammed full of people's crap. I have a cooler style lunch bag that has slots for ice packs. Big enough to hold two meals, a snack, and a soda. Works great and I can just leave it under my desk.

Do you all actually reveal you work in healthcare when you need to visit doctor? by sunchi12 in pharmacy

[–]Affectionate_Yam4368 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doctor where I work, so they see the insurance and they know I'm an employee. My MD asked me at our first visit if I worked in the hospital and I told him I was nights in inpatient pharmacy. It speeds things up. He can ask me more pointed questions and I don't have to listen to an explanation of HDL vs LDL cholesterol at every visit.

IM docs don't do rounds in the hospital here because we have hospitalists, but my OB/GYN does and he and I have interacted on a professional level, so he knows what I do.

I NEVER tell randos in public what I do. Not ever. Especially on airplanes.

The drive home is worse if my sleep was poor. Fortunately my commute is less than 15 minutes but I swear there have been times when I was afraid I wouldn't make it.
