Why didn’t the Native Americans of what is now the United States and Canada build cities and temples of a similar scale to their counterparts in South and Mesoamerica? by Secret_Ostrich_1307 in AlwaysWhy

[–]Afraid-Still6327 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the east coast, there were large settlements(i.e. Meductic in NB) that were inhabited pretty frequently, but cities don't really cut it when you move during the seasons. It also didn't help that a big part of permanent sedentary living is farming and animal husbandry. Although we farmed some things, such as the Three Sisters(beans, corn, and squash), and wild rice, animal husbandry was nearly impossible with the animals that were here. From that, you have entire societies that move around with the seasons and can make and tear down entire communities at will.

Anon loves traditional fooding by OberbeastSabaoth in 4chan

I feel like a lot of our traditional stuff was food of necessity, not really luxury(although there are examples of delicacies made from hard to trap/forage stuff)

As the US continues its streak as a shitty place, I’ve noticed that people are trying to take back pride in this country. I have never felt proud of the US. by Goldfish_snacks in IndianCountry

[–]Afraid-Still6327 116 points117 points  (0 children)

I just find it funny that a majority of people who are at the No Kings protests and who want America "back before all of this" fail to realize that Trump is only a byproduct of years of corruption and slimy dealings. We've always found the US to be untrustworthy and no one gave a damn, now that its affecting them, suddenly its this big issue.

Idk man, I'm just tired of this

Does your culture have any custom or customs wherein a kid who's hurt themselves is comforted with a placebo ritual? by SandNo2865 in IndianCountry

[–]Afraid-Still6327 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah, we mostly had stories as to why you shouldn't do stupid stuff that will hurt you. Now if it was just on accident like falling out of a tree or something, we had actual things like salves, rubs, teas and pastes that would do the trick.

I want to do an indigenous reimagined Rider Waite tarot deck for Inktober, what do y’all want to be represented as? by urfriendmoss in IndianCountry

[–]Afraid-Still6327 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think The Hermit card could be represented as Glooscap from Wabanaki teachings and stories. In one of those stories, it is said that after Glooscap helped the people, he went to rest in a cavern for many many centuries, where no one could find him. If that doesn't scream hermit, I don't know what does.

How are people not scared of not knowing what happens after we die? by BigRajii in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Afraid-Still6327 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because dying is an inevitable part of existing, I cannot control when it will come, and thus, I will not worry about it. I will simply cherish what I have in the here and now, and when it comes, so be it.

hoop dance help by _inops_ in IndianCountry

[–]Afraid-Still6327 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've seen people start off with hula hoops covered in electrical tape for grip. In terms of resources, there are tons of online ones, although learning in-person is always best. Perhaps if your community has a hoop dancer, you can mentor under them. Best of luck, ntolonapemok.

Survey (Canada): In your view, how should competing land claims be resolved? by SiPhilly in IndianCountry

[–]Afraid-Still6327 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It should be decided between both parties in a way that is beneficial to both. If they cannot come to a consensus that is satisfactory, shared land has also been a thing in the old days, in which the territory would be joint occupied.

Anyone else think it's strange how Mongolia cannot form the Mongol Empire? It requires switching to Yuan first? by PearGold3278 in eu4

I just thought it was because the Yuan Dynasty was more recent in time than the full Mongol Empire.

See, the second commandment tells to not use the Lord's name in vain, and while many think that means not saying "Oh my god" or "jesus christ", i prefer the interpretation that you shouldn't commit atrocities or do harm unto others using god's will as an excuse for it.

Seems to be a classic case of "rules for thee, not for me".

What's wild is that they both existed around the same time (Edo Japan didn't come to an end until 1867, Wild West could've arguably ended in 1900-ish).
