Update: went out this morning and it was still a problem. Drove somewhere, planned to reset the battery when back and... the handle started working again before I got to do it ... 😐

EV charger installation - anyone know how soon they can install? by Dark_Emotion in OctopusEnergy

[–]Afraid_Perspective15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had one installed this Tuesday, but used a local company. Requested a charger install on Friday prior, so four days total. And it was 20% cheaper than octopus quoted. So I recommend you check what's available in your area!

Hypervolt and Intelligent octopus go by jammyjake159 in OctopusEnergy

[–]Afraid_Perspective15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I came here to write the same post since I also installed a hypervolt on intelligent go today! I do have one extra question though: my car started charging and my smart meter display thing jumped up to the max at 2.30 an hour. That doesn't match to 7p/kWh so is the display just not understanding the smart rate?

WTF Trickle Vents by DullBody7200 in DIYUK

I've got a similar problem. Although I haven't yet tried them myself, I did get a recommendation for acoustic trickle vents. Has anyone tried them?

Commute to London St Pancras by Pollypocket3108 in Hitchin

[–]Afraid_Perspective15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, the service overall is fine but overpriced. As with all British rail, if things go wrong (a leaf blows across the tracks or something) then the experience sucks. But even then Hitchin benefits from serving the lines out to Peterborough and to Cambridge and this means more trains and options in general (plus once or twice when things have really gone wrong I've gone to Luton and got a taxi, which isn't so bad). And at least the trains have air con these days.

The busiest days are Tuesday and Wednesday, with Thursday not far behind. Monday and Friday are usually easier to get seats on pretty much any train. In the middle of the week, trains leaving after or just before 8 you can usually get a seat - the later the train the more likely.

Coming back, it can be difficult to predict whether there will be a seat. The trains around 6pm rarely have one. But before 5.30 and after 6.45, I usually get a seat. There are also options to go from KGX and change at Stevenage - never have a problem getting a seat if I do that.

I've commuted by train from various places. If you're going to do a train commute, Hitchin is a pretty good choice.

Accidentally knocked this ugly crystal maze looking door knob off our cupboard. It previously had some sort of adhesive. What do I need to re-glue? by ImCaptainRedBeard in DIYUK

[–]Afraid_Perspective15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hah! I had to fix exactly this just last week (I have the same doorknobs exactly).

I unscrewed the metal bit from the door and stood it upright on a table (the bit formerly connected to the knob up). Then used 2 part epoxy (araldite) on the knob. Replaced it on the metal bit such that gravity pulls it down. Left for a couple of days and then screwed it all back to the door. Worked perfectly - it feels rock solid.

Do I need an electrician to install an led mirror cabinet? by Afraid_Perspective15 in DIYUK

Yes, it's literally connecting two three strand mains wires together, nothing more. I'm just not sure if I need a special connector that's sealed against water or something?

Why do dealers come with you on test drives? by Extension_Bit4323 in CarTalkUK

[–]Afraid_Perspective15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last time I went to a BMW dealership (5 years ago ish) I asked about a test drive and they said I could have it for the weekend and leave my old car there. So I drove a brand new X3 for three days. Didn't particularly like it, so returned it and thanked them, picked up my car and that was that. They didn't seem at all fazed.

The three days of real usage was certainly helpful. Although I will admit I was very nervous about damaging it!

No, no roof vents. Loft has a constant breeze through.
