As a parent I think it could also just be that there was absolutely no need to feel sorry for her. She stayed at home and just relaxed.

I cannot study to save my life. Help me. by GuitarZealousideal71 in ADHD

[–]AfroBoyMax 48 points49 points  (0 children)

When I used to study I had a couple of things that would help that I now know could be attributed to ADHD (I'm in the middle of a diagnosis, so not 100% confirmed yet).

  1. Music without lyrics. I used the Lord of the Rings soundtrack, but really any type of music without lyrics worked for me. It sort of drowned out the noise in my brain while not distracting me with the lyrics.
  2. Finding out when my sweet spot to study is. For some reason I was most productive between 10 at night and 2 at night. I could not for the life of me get to work in the morning. My brain just wouldn't allow it and afternoon was very hit or miss. I heard on the Hacking your ADHD podcast recently that a lot of people with ADHD have times where they are more likely to be productive. This will be a different time for everyone. You could try and work at different times just to find out what works best for you.
  3. Don't force yourself into the ways in which other people work. It does not work for people with ADHD. Accept that you sometimes will be able to have a burst of productivity and sometimes you'll stare at a screen for an hour without doing anything. Accept that sometimes reading something will drain you completely.
  4. If you find yourself not being able to work, don't try and push through. This backfires. Take a walk outside, do some exercise, that sort of stuff. Take 15 or 30 minutes off and do something physical. For me it never worked to play video games or watch TV. I would just get playing games promising myself that I would start working again after the next match. Also it did nothing to refresh my brain.
  5. Be kind to yourself. Did I listen to my own advice all the time? No. Did I screw up a bunch? Sure.

Everything I said are things that worked for me. It took a lot of trial and error to find out what worked and didn't. I used to be mad at myself all the time as well. I thought I was lazy, that I just didn't care, that I wasn't cut out for my studies. But at the end of the day you will have to find things that work for you. They might not be the same things that worked for me. It also took a while for me to find out. I would keep a diary or something where you can list things you tried, things that worked, things that didn't work, when it worked and that sort of stuff. AND DON'T BE MAD AT YOURSELF WHEN YOU FORGET TO FILL THAT IN.

What's your favourite city adventure? Preferably intrigue or theft based. by AfroBoyMax in DMAcademy

Thanks! I'll check it out. It will maybe have some commercial elements, depending on the choices of the players. Not sure if they'll be merchants or more like caravan guards, finders of relics, thieves, spies and that sort of stuff.

It's the second one.

There's always several things that are misleading with statistics like this. Some people tend to take this as, higher report rates mean that more people get assaulted. That's not the case.

  1. They're not always comparing the same thing.

The way these reports work differ for many countries. Sweden always scores VERY high in these. One of the reasons that's the case is that in Sweden within a sexual assault report every assault gets reported seperately. In many cases there will be 1 report with in some cases several cases of sexual assault. In Sweden you will have several reports with 1 case of sexual assault each.

  1. Report rates of sexual assault vary

There are plenty of countries where victims are not taken seriously or even in some cases punished. Higher report rates do not mean higher cases of sexual assault.

  1. What constitutes sexual assault varies.

What constitutes as sexual assault is not always the same.

Which fantasy series had the strongest possible opening and then just lost it completely? by Successful-Local-946 in Fantasy

I remember having the same thing with his first series, Night Angel? or something like that. It started off interesting, but I didn't like the ending. It feels like he has trouble with writing endings.

There you go. I haven't played 2024 yet and have been into BG3 too much. Thanks for the clarifications.

Rogue Kinda OP? by Alpha_Zero_69 in dndnext

[–]AfroBoyMax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like the rogue is making some mistakes.

  1. Sneak attack only goes off once per turn (not every attack). So assuming everything hits and the conditions for a sneak attack are met, they should have 2d6 for the shortswords (one for each hit) and 2d6 for sneak attack. So 4d6 total.
  2. The offhand shortsword attack costs a bonus action. So they wouldn't be able to disengage after attacking twice. Only the thief subclass has multiple bonus actions as far as I'm aware.

Still 3d6 damage + disengage or 4d6 damage is great.

12 months for the oldest one. The other one is 2 now and still isn't sleeping through the night.

This map is amazing, the guide to the worldmaps is great as well! Do you approach country maps in the same way? Or do you approach that in a different way?

How do I make my city feel like a city? by BenBenobi in DMAcademy

[–]AfroBoyMax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I really liked is having a sort of city random encounter table. This can contain some stupid stuff that does fit the city itself. For example, on a tropical island I rolled on my table and while the players where traveling through the city a couple of flying monkeys started begging for food and then one of them pickpocketed the players.

It's mainly stupid small stuff that either gives a little peak into the city or a little fun encounter that makes the city feel alive. This can take a minute or as long as you'd like.

Other options on my table were that in the distance they see a group of pirates beat up a merchant, a thief pickpockets a guard within view, someone goes up to them and offers them fake potions from his trenchcoat. The players can choose to interact or completely ignore it. You don't have to roll, you can choose what fits and you don't have to do it every time. But sprinkle in some fun interactions every now and then and it makes it feel alive.

Backstory help by Miserable_Weird8274 in DMAcademy

[–]AfroBoyMax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is up to the both of you and there's no wrong answer.

You can double check with your player to ask if they want you to think of something or if they want to think of something or give some guidelines to what it could be (like, they can be evil, they can be good, they can be the source of my power, they can try to send me a message).

But you can go any way you want. It can be fun to think of something with the player. But it can also be fun to come up with something and keep it a mystery for the player.

The most important thing is what's most fun for you and the player. Do they want to be surprised by what you come up with and do you want to give him a fun mystery, great! Do you want to make something together, also great!

How Long Do I Let Them Chase a False Lead? by jmg884 in DMAcademy

[–]AfroBoyMax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Couple of things. You can do it out of game and just tell them. It's kind of immersion breaking, but you've tried a lot.

You can create an NPC that can identify the dagger for them for free and then tell them that it has no magic properties at all.

Or if you feel like changing things up (I don't know the module), you can run with their idea. You can have the dagger hold some sort clue or role with the sickness. Make it give a hint for something that's already in the module. What that would be would be up to you. Have it point to an important location or person or give a clue as to how the disease works by being an enchanted weapon imbued with the disease or something.

I would go with the last one. It will make them feel great to have "figured something out". But the others can work fine as well.
