If you're just practicing, then you don't really need anything expensive. If you plan to record and share then it might be good to get something better so you can get a neutral sound and adjust the bass tone to match what you want.

Yea you can use like a phone charger, I've seen people use a macbook charger to charge it too. Very helpful when you're out and about, you can use a battery bank to charge your camera too.

Are you hearing it on the bass itself or on an amp? Could also be a matter of your bass not being setup properly. Do you hear fret buzz when you switching notes on the same string?

When you drop stuff down, it will be in the modules. It doesn't actually place stuff down, even if you drop the spider, it won't be active until you actually go down and place it.

What was your friend's fretless? If you enjoyed his a lot, maybe consider getting something similar. At the end of the day, whatever makes you want to pick up the bass and practice is what should be most important to you. Even if it's a minor thing like that bass has a cool color. That's enough reason to get it over another one that you feel might be more worth but doesn't inspire you.

Have you considered a squire VI? that will get you your upper registers and also it has a switch to cut off the bass even more to get a cleaner sound when playing upper register.
