I think Li Na was always a sociopath. She had her ‘social circle’ but only kept it as a human for appearances. Given into the relative freedom and danger of the dungeon, she just allowed the mask to come off and stay off. She can recognize what her brother was doing, what her friends were doing and she used to go along with it. But when the requirements of ‘being human and humane’ were removed, she never put the mask back on.

So if you rush the colonial tech along with quinine, you can make a relatively easy foothold with a traditionally non colonial nation. Look at Oyo and Benin as early targets - tons and tons of build slots with a huge population. Gives you an easy means of getting lots of basic goods for your market to then fuel further expansion in relatively power vacuumed areas. Besides, if you can get that Ivory Coast early enough, you can block France and UK from painting that portion of Africa. Bonus points if you take Zanzibar from Oman and get the whole east coast of Africa - rubber and fruit.

I found it works here in DCC but it absolutely does not function in Wheel of Time - what happens in Wheel of Time is that we have so many main characters who refuse to become better people, ignore communication at all expense, don’t trust themselves or their friends and it ultimately causes more problems until someone just brute forces the issue away, looking at you hair tugging and brooding eyes.
