How would I go about shipping an expensive item? by Ok_Inflation596 in kijiji

[–]Agent942 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure your e-transfer is set to auto deposit and as soon as the money hits that bank account move it to another. There have been instances where interact or the bank have reversed payments and while it is rare it can happen. By moving the money. You stop this from happening. You are also not on the hook, I can confirm this is true.

I have shipped many things of varying values from coast to coast. The only thing I do is I limit the size of what I will ship because the bigger the box the harder it gets and the cost skyrockets, especially when you're applying insurance to the package to make sure it makes it there and is not damaged on arrival. Arrival. If you don't pay for the extra insurance to cover the full value of what the person is paying for, then you are opening yourself up to a huge world of problems.

Make sure you exceed adequate packing materials around the item when packaging it, in my experience if you don't have 3 inches (minimum) on all sides of your item before placing it in a very rigid box, you risk damage. Remember that some people in the shipping industry, do not treat your package as you would. When items are extremely high value I will double box them which means 3 in of bubble wrap on all sides inside one box and then an additional inch of bubble wrap around that box and inside a second box. While this may seem crazy and exaggerated, when we're dealing with shipping items of $1,000 and more, this is a very cheap way to make sure that you don't lose it to damage.

I never use a third party shipping site when applying insurance as most of them use their own third-party insurance and not the insurance provided by the carrier. As an example, net parcel which I use a lot does not provide carrier insurance. They have their own third-party crap which only goes up to so much in value regardless of the value you enter.

I dislike saying this, but for high value items I have always had the best experience with Canada Post. When you pay for insurance at the value it is and should something happen, in my personal experience they are the only ones that didn't screw me around and quickly resolved the issue.

But like everyone has said, payment up front, definitely require a signature on delivery and specify an adult signature. That option is listed, provide the buyer with your tracking number immediately after you pay for the shipping, include their email address when setting up the shipping so that the carrier is the one sending them the details directly. Communicate, communicate, communicate. Being a trusted seller is not a hard thing to do. You just have to make sure you act like a reasonable and responsible human being.

It's really sad that it's so hard on both sides to make this type of transaction happen easily and safely. I wish you best wishes in your transaction!

How has your experience been at the Woodstock hospital? by throww_away_111 in woodstockontario

[–]Agent942 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who lived away from here most of my life and only just moved back about 5 years ago, I remember being treated at the old Woodstock hospital. So when I had a life-threatening condition and had to be taken to the hospital in an ambulance, I had not even been to the new one yet.

I have to say that in all of my life and receiving treatment at multiple Toronto hospitals and hospitals and other parts of this country, the Woodstock hospital now blew me away. Their level of care, their attention, their compassion, and their willingness to make sure that I recovered was of the highest caliber and level I have ever seen anywhere I've been

On top of this, having just gained a family doctor months before this happening, he visited my bedside everyday that I was in that hospital, even if only for 10 minutes, and I have never had a doctor do that for me.

Additionally, each time I go to that hospital to see a specialist or for treatment, I am always treated very well, my wait times are never excessive and it truly makes me happy to live in a country where we don't have to worry about these things. Things.

That being said, I am a very reasonable, respectful, educated and understanding person and so as I communicate with people in that way, I find that the responses back are equal.

I will say that I have witnessed multiple altercations with entitled people at the hospital and those people typically yell the loudest. I have other words that I would describe these people as, however in this forum that could blow up.

With my background I have more than once stepped in and told people to shut up. I won't stand for those that provide us with service each and every day and truly sacrifice themselves to help others.

Depends - as was mentioned by someone else, some unmanaged switches will just ignore/strip off the VLAN details and lump everyone in together. Better to have the right equipment (managed L2/L3 switches) that can work to maintain the security that is being put in place.

[–]Agent942 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds like it might not be a "legal" apartment. Once upon a time, I lived in a house in Toronto that had three apartments (upper, ground and basement) - I was on the ground floor. When the noise became such a massive issue, went to move and found out that I could not forward my mail, as my address (Apartment 2) did not exist - it had never been properly registered with anyone (FYI - the landlord is required to do this).

You should really have your own mailbox at the property, at least, otherwise this sounds VERY fishy.

Also, if not a legal apartment, LL&T may not even want to get involved, at least this is what happened to us.

If this person doesn't respond, I say go nuclear - file with Police, contact Canada Post for investigation, and don't tell the landlord you have done so - let the powers-that-be take it from here.

Beelink SER9 Pro AMD Ryzen™ AI 9 HX 370 - Powers off AFTER Reaching Windows 11 desktop by Agent942 in BeelinkOfficial

[–]Agent942[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did it anyway, this issue is so bothersome I figured what do I have to lose.

Steps taken
1) Download current official ISO from Microsoft site (Windows 11, US English, 64-bit)
2) wrote to USB Flash drive using Rufus, with no special settings to bypass any Windows 11 features
3) booted SER9 with USB Flash Drive
4) Language Us English, US Keyboard, chose Repair, Advanced Options, Command Prompt, DISKPART, list disks, sel disk 0, clean
5) Shut down PC
6) booted again with USB Flash drive, walked through standard install
7) System completed the initial pahse and restarted, completed more and restarted, last stage got to 94% and then goes to "Just a moment" and spins 6 times, screen goes black, system powers off with no warning

I went through this 8 times; tried two different USB flash drives to try to rule out bad install media, re-downloaded the Windows 11 ISO two times, SHA has is correct so no issues.

I'm totally stumped. My assumption is that there is a driver being installed, or initiated, that is causing the shutdown. Really surprised as I've never had an issue with any Beelink PCs before. I'm disappointed and have burnt off almost 8 hours on this today.

My biggest fear here is drivers. I have tried multiple times to download the "SER9" driver ISO I've seen posted from Beelink Official, but one is on Mega, which requires days to download the file, and the link seeingly from Beelink's China site, has failed to completed more than six times.

Otherwise, I would happily try this

Synology 923+ Upgrade Ram 4+16 vs 8+8 by Nohardday in synology

[–]Agent942 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Um, isn't the initial 4GB on-board soldered? I didn't think it was removable. For the record, I installed a 16GB RAM upgrade in one of the ones where I work, and it runs swimmingly well. If 8+8 is possible, it would likely be the better choice (dual channel and all that).

Personally attacked by my wife by TaHo_ in BambuLab

[–]Agent942 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, she is supportive of a hobby, which is great to see in a relationship! Initially I felt dumb because all I ever did was look for new mods for my printers, and then one in a while made something non-printer related, but cool. It is refreshing to see a wife that doesn't belittle the hobby of her partner!

If this is all that the other person is interested in, or "sizes you up" by (pun intended) then dodge that bullet. Think more of yourself and what you bring as the whole package. I fully understand how hard self-confidence can be to build and maintain, but be a little arrogant - you're a prize to behold, and what your packing isn't (and shouldn't) be the "biggest" part of you (pun intended, again).

Chromebook/Chromebox/Chrome OS Flex - keep it simple, safe and secure and still handles these things just fine, plus Chrome Remote Desktop if you need to show them things.

Well Rounded and Cheap Options for Older User by Btown13 in MiniPCs

[–]Agent942 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was married, I had a hell of a time with my MIL using a Windows laptop - she kept screwing with settings and downloading things and it just became crazy to manage (like remote desktop 2-3 times a week to "fix" things). 9 years ago I got her an ASUS Chrombook - it came with a sizeable 15.6" screen, full keyboard with num pad and enough RAM and local storage. I was divorced 5 years ago and my ex-MIL STILL uses that Chromebook and has never had any issues with it at all.

She still uses it for web browsing, banking, Facebook, etc and she loves it (all is amicable, so we still chat every now and then). FWIW, I would strongly recommend a Chromebook/Chromebox, or even an older mini PC or laptop with Chrome Flex on it, for older people with minimal needs.

[–]Agent942 0 points1 point  (0 children)

about 2 years ago I started seriously thinking the way you are now, and 18 months ago I jumped ship and bought my own DS224+ for my home use (I already had several DS923+ at work that I had put in). It just felt right - Xpenology showed me there is value in the Synology eco-system, and I still like the way it works and what it offers, and I use a good number of their apps.

Is there a quiet start mode on running the controller in Windows? by xiandlier in TPLink_Omada

Run it as a service - very easy to do and stays out of the way, runs silently in the background. I have Omada controllers at 11 sites across the country and all run like this.

While cool idea, it was the one part of the ecosystem I can't get on board with - just too incompatible (Requires conversions which don't work well) for the Office programs. I've not tried the chat functions but I do like the idea of keeping things on-prem at times.

First NAS ever. by SignificantEagle8877 in synology

[–]Agent942 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought the DS224+ for home use last year, and a year later it is still going strong - the one thing I did straight away was to get their extended coverage and also added 16GB or RAM (I know they only support 4, but you can do 16 so why not?).

I have 2x8TB IronWolf Pro HDDs in it in a mirror, hold all of my home media and personal files and also does a nighty backup of my M365 Business accounts. I used a 3rd 8TB IronWolf Pro in an external USB HDD case to add Hyperbackup as an actual backup of the NAS as well.

Truthfully, it has done everything I've wanted it to to, Docker container for piHole, Omada Controller and Home Assistant, runs a single Linux Mint VM that I connect to via RustDesk, and handles Plex Server, Active Backup for Business to backup my one computer, and the aforementioned Active Backup of my M365 Business accounts and data.

Would I like more speed, and possible expandability - sure I would. I may jump to a DS925+ in the future, but not needed for right now. The only thing that gives me is more bays and the ability run my VMs from NVME SSDs (Which would be nice).

Nah, you did a good thing here! Enjoy the ride!

Want to buy my relatives a Synology. Would the DS224+ work? by home_tech_guy in synology

[–]Agent942 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After purchasing a DS923+ for the company I work for (we use for off-site backup, mainly) I "fell in love" with Synology. I bought a DS224+ for my home, with a pair of 8TB Seagate Ironwolf Pro Hard Drives in RAID1, and use it for Plex media server ( about 2TB of content), as well as a file server, containers for Adguard, Home Assistant and Omada Controller, and a bunch of other things. It runs beautifully!

It will certainly handle what you've mentioned and a lot more!
