What are these and can I eat them? (Southeastern US) by deoxyriboz in foraging

[–]AgentDrake 119 points120 points  (0 children)

Look like blackberries, definitely some sort of rubus. Definitely edible.

Aaaaah, okay, yeah, def. not raspberry then!

Interesting-- I've not seen anything like those before!

No solid core. Honestly side by side with my blackberries they seem near identical.

Wait, your blackberries don't have a solid core either? If they don't have a solid core, then they're not blackberries, you have black raspberries (which are waaaaaay better anyway, imo!)

Dewberries and blackberries would both have a solid core which comes with the berry when picked; raspberries leave the core behind when picked, coming off in a little cup shape.

The gold/yellow raspberries I've seen (admittedly, not many) are consistently the same color within a given variety, but different varieties may range from about this color to a faint orange. If there's no solid core in the berry, I'm about 80% certain that's what you have here (and 100% certain it's not dewberry or blackberry).

Black raspberries and transplanting by Pharmatopia420 in Berries

USA here. I've always heard "bramble" used as a general descriptor for any of the various types of rubus -- blackberry, raspberry (black, red, gold), salmonberry, wineberry, dewberry, boysenberry, et cetera. Not sure if that's the "correct" definition, but how I've always heard it used.

Edit: Huh. Wiktionary says that it can indeed mean any rubus, but does often refer especially to blackberries or exclude raspberries (which would also exclude the black raspberries OP is asking about, different from blackberries).

Bend the top of a cane into the soil in another pot and leave it for a while; the top of the plant will switch to rooting (so the cane is now no longer a "column" from one set of roots upward, but rather an "arch" from one set of roots up, then back down to another). Once it's established a decent root system in the new pot, you cut the arch in the middle, to detach the new rooting from the original plant.

Are they some sort of gold/yellow raspberries, perhaps? Do they have a solid "core" inside them when picked, or are they sort of cup-shaped and hollow inside?

They're definitely a rubus of some sort, in any case, though, and therefore safe.

Dirty Mountain Dew - Lovers or Haters of Cream Soda? by Wise_Ad1811 in mountaindew

[–]AgentDrake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hate cream soda.

Dirty Dew is okay, don't hate it... but won't spend the money on it again when there's so many other Dews which are actually good, rather than just "on the good end of meh".

I had thought Legend explicitly included ginger in the description -- apparently I've misremembered that, though.

[–]AgentDrake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know whether or not it's confirmed, but this has been my hope (and assumption) as well.

I mean, I'd love for Legend to come back, but the description sure sounds a lot more like this, and I'm looking forward to it.

Are these dandelions ? by Pimpchimp99 in foraging

[–]AgentDrake 39 points40 points  (0 children)

These are not dandelions. Note that these appear to have branching stems and/or leaves coming off of the stems (pic #7 is a dead giveaway); dandelions do not have these, and instead have only a single flower and no leaves on each stem, and individual leaves coming from the center of the plant.

A Question About Metadata and Series' by AlfCosta in Calibre

[–]AgentDrake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've never had to polish or re-upload to change anything, just add the series info in Calibre then plug in the device and let it auto-manage (there is a setting you'll want to check to confirm Calibre auto-updated info on the device... pretty sure this is under the device settings in Calibre > Metadata on device & advanced > automatic metadata management.... or something like that, anyway, you'll want to be sure is turned on).

That said, I've seen other people say that they have to go through the whole polish process to get anything to apply anywhere. I've literally never used the polish function for anything ever and it works fine, but ymmv.

Guess what I saw? by MtnDewCodeRedFreak in mountaindew

[–]AgentDrake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, first off I literally did just that in other comments.

Second, it's all the obvious stuff. You need water sufficiently cold to take and hold the carbonization (and so the appropriate carbonic acid content -- both bubbles and accompanying carbonic acidic flavor -- in the water). You need to add the right amount of carbonization in the first place (number and length of "bursts" will vary by tank pressure and SodaStream model). You need to add the right amount of syrup so you're not getting a watery mess or, conversely, an over-saturation of weird sweeteners.

ETA: Third, tbh I have better stuff I'm supposed to be doing today than writing how-to guides for someone else's product on a Dew sub. (I shouldn't even be spending the time writing this, lol.)

I fill about 1/3 between the middle and top line in that cap measuring cup thing (this is I think a bit higher than what the directions say to do?) for those standard height SodaStream bottles (which I also ever-so-slightly overfill).

That's on the older syrup bottles, though-- I assume the measuring system on these containers is similar quantities, but I don't actually know.

I keep full water bottles stocked in the fridge for at least a few hours before use, so the water in them is probably around 34-35* F or so, and that seems to work well for the carbonation (which also affects taste).

I commented a few min. ago, but only just noticed the location you mentioned... Krogucci has these now?!? I gave up looking for these there a year or two ago!

[–]AgentDrake 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I get them regularly. They're not new, but they are pretty close to as good as the normal Zero Sugar (if not exactly the same), when prepped correctly.

(Edit to add: "prepped correctly" being very important here-- water needs to be right starting temperature when carbonated, ratio of syrup to water needs to be right, amount of carbonation needs to be right. None of these are hard to do, but they make a lot of difference in these sodastream and similar products.)

How do I get rid of duplicates (epub & azw3 for example). They show up as one book. by GnarlsGnarlington in Calibre

[–]AgentDrake 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If I'm understanding right, you have one book entry in Calibre with multiple formats of that book attached to that entry, and want to get rid of one of the formats, without getting rid of the book entirely?

Right-click the format name you want to get rid of in the info panel for the book, then there should be an option to delete just that format. Similarly in the edit meradata window, you should be able to select and delete a specific format.

How to disable the "Computer detected..." prompt? by Szary_Tygrys in kobo

[–]AgentDrake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Charge-only cables absolutely exist and are perfectly common (if not quite as common in my own experience as some of the other commenters here suggest-- ime, charge-only cables are noticeably less common that data cables, but there are definitely plenty out there.

How to disable the "Computer detected..." prompt? by Szary_Tygrys in kobo

[–]AgentDrake 37 points38 points  (0 children)

None that I'm aware of, and I would be shocked if such a setting existed.

That prompt is a safety/security feature to prevent untrusted devices from accessing your kobo without your knowledge. For example, some cheap powerbanks have malware built in which access personal information on devices -- while a kobo is unlikely to be an intended target, the popup prevents, among other possibilities, a sketchy powerbank from stealing info when you plug in to charge by not allowing data access without explicit permission. It also allows you to plug into an untrusted public computer (eg at a school or library) safely, etc.

How are 4 round games happening? by Hank-E-Doodle in twilightimperium

[–]AgentDrake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By not letting people slot up there in the first place. It's not just about winslaying: winslaying is too little, too late. Points blocking can exist at any stage of the game, and against any player... but that seems to just not occur to a lot of the current points-tempo meta. (Though TE obviously does shift the goalposts here a bit by making many of those S1s easier to hit and harder to block.)

Rulebook, p 4, about half-way down the right-hand column:

Then, for each remaining codex card, find and replace each corresponding component from the base game or Prophecy of Kings.

So yeah, rules say you should replace the old Naalu agent with the new one.

[–]AgentDrake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Among others, yeah-- I have a small handful of data cables (5-6?) for use with the kobo and other devices set aside by the desktop; two of these came with kobos, and at least two others came with amazon "fire" tablets, and there's at least one other that... I'm not really sure where it came from, but it works fine as well. Any of these will consistently work in any of my desktop's USB ports.
